Hemp vs Pot![]() What's the difference between hemp and pot, anyway? A single genetic switch. In 2011, researchers from the University of Saskatchewan announced that they'd discovered the genetic alteration that allows psychoactive cannabis plants (Cannabis sativa) to give users a high (as compared to industrial hemp plants, which are no fun for smoking).
Industrial hemp plants are the same species as marijuana plants, but they don't produce a substance called tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA). This is the precursor to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient in pot. Hemp plants fail to produce this substance because they lack a gene that makes an enzyme to produce THCA, according to University of Saskatchewan biochemist Jon Page. In contrast, marijuana plants do produce THCA but don't create much of a substance called cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), which occurs in abundance in hemp but competes with THCA for raw materials. Thus, hemp is rich in nonpsychoactive CBDA, while marijuana is chock full of mind-bending THC. It's Tax Time![]() The IRS tax deadline is Tuesday, April 17. CLICK HERE FOR 45-60 DAY CALENDARVeterans Designation on Driver's License
The number of Pennsylvania veterans who have added a veterans designation to their driver’s license or ID card has topped more than half a million and has grown every day since the program began in 2014. The designation – an American flag with the word VETERAN beneath it – is a patriotic way for veterans to show their pride and convey to others that they served in the United States military. “More than 500,000 of Pennsylvania’s veterans opting for this patriotic designation illustrates how proud these men and women are to have worn the uniform,” said Maj. Gen. Tony Carrelli, Pennsylvania’s adjutant general and head of the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. “Pennsylvania is home to the fourth-largest veterans’ population in the country and we are thrilled to honor their tremendous service through this program.” The veterans designation does not entitle a veteran to any special consideration or discount but rather identifies the bearer as a veteran. Any other recognition, such as a discount, complementary meal or other token of appreciation is completely and solely determined by the organization, business or entity providing a service. “The veterans designation has been extremely popular and continues to grow rapidly as thousands of veterans choose to add the designation to their driver’s license or ID every week,” said Pennsylvania’s Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Secretary Leslie S. Richards. “PennDOT is proud to partner with the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs to provide veterans across the state with this important program.” Qualified applicants for a veterans designation must have served in the United States Armed Forces and/or the reserve component, and have been discharged or released from service under conditions other than dishonorable. There is no fee for the veterans designation, however regular renewal or duplicate fees still apply. Forms for driver’s license or ID renewals and duplicates have a box for applicants to certify that they are a veteran, and to have the designation added. Once the veterans designation has been added to a driver’s license or identification card, it will automatically appear each time it is renewed. To renew a commercial driver’s license (CDL) and add the veterans designation, applicants must complete and mail in a DL-143CD form and applicable fees. To obtain a duplicate CDL with the veterans designation, applicants must complete and mail in a DL-80CD form and applicable fees. Veterans holding a non-commercial driver’s license or identification card can immediately apply for the designation by visiting www.dmv.pa.gov and clicking on the America Entertainment This Week

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - February 6Elizabeth becomes queen 1952 On this day in 1952, after a long illness, King George VI of Great Britain and Northern Ireland dies in his sleep at the royal estate at Sandringham. Princess Elizabeth, the oldest of the king’s two daughters and next in line to succeed him, was in Kenya at the time of her father’s death; she was crowned Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953, at age 27. King George VI, the second son of King George V, ascended to the throne in 1936 after his older brother, King Edward VIII, voluntarily abdicated to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. During World War II, George worked to rally the spirits of the British people by touring war zones, making a series of morale-boosting radio broadcasts (for which he overcame a speech impediment) and shunning the safety of the countryside to remain with his wife in bomb-damaged Buckingham Palace. The king’s health deteriorated in 1949, but he continued to perform state duties until his death in 1952. Queen Elizabeth, born on April 21, 1926, and known to her family as Lilibet, was groomed as a girl to succeed her father. She married a distant cousin, Philip Mountbatten, on November 20, 1947, at London’s Westminster Abbey. The first of Elizabeth’s four children, Prince Charles, was born ![]()
