The marijuana plant isn't used only for smoking; its fibers can also be made into rope or fabric. Perhaps the oddest use of hemp rope on record is as a method for transporting giant stone statues. In 2012, archaeologists created reproductions of Easter Island's statues, trying to figure out how ancient people may have moved the iconic 9,600-lb. (4.35 metric tons) heads from their quarry. Theorists have suggested everything from log rollers to extraterrestrial help for the task, but in 2012, California State University Long Beach archaeologist Carl Lipo proved that all that was needed is hemp rope.
By attaching three hemp ropes to the statue and having a team of 18 people rock it back and forth until it "walked," Lipo and his team were able to move the hunk of stone 328 feet (100 meters) in less than an hour, they reported in the Journal of Archaeological Science. Easter Islanders would have had woody shrubs similar to marijuana plants to use in making rope, the researchers argued. Babies only Remember the Good
Parents who spend their time playing with and talking to their five-month-old baby may wonder whether their child remembers any of it a day later.
Thanks to a new BYU study, we now know that they at least remember the good times. The study, published in Infant Behavior and Development, shows that babies are more likely to remember something if there is a positive emotion, or affect, that accompanies it. “People study memory in infants, they study discrimination in emotional affect, but we are the first ones to study how these emotions influence memory,” said BYU psychology professor Ross Flom, lead author of the study. Although the five-month-olds can’t talk, there are a number of different ways that researchers can analyze how the babies respond to testing treatments. In this particular study, they monitored the infants’ eye movements and how long they look at a test image. The babies were set in front of a flat paneled monitor in a closed off partition and then exposed to a person on screen speaking to them with either a happy, neutral or angry voice. Immediately following the emotional exposure, they were shown a geometric shape. To test their memory, the researchers did follow-up tests 5 minutes later and again one day later. In the follow-up test, babies were shown two side-by-side geometric shapes: a brand new one, and the original one from the study. The researchers then were able to record how many times the baby looked from one image to the next and how long they spent looking at each image. Babies’ memories didn’t improve if the shape had been paired with a negative voice, but they performed significantly better at remembering shapes attached to positive voices. “We think what happens is that the positive affect heightens the babies’ attentional system and arousal,” Flom said. “By heightening those systems, we heighten their ability to process and perhaps remember this geometric pattern.” Heritage Center presentation

December 2017 - Staff members from HDOnTap and Codorus State Park worked through the cold and wind to replace and rewire cables at the nest site. Some of the nest had fallen. On Thursday, July 12, 2018, at 7 PM, it will operate for the Slate Belt Heritage Center's monthly program, which will occur at the Hoist. The program will detail the restoration of the hoist and feature a live demonstration. Although work on the hoist and pavilion is still underway, progress is so advanced that we can look forward to this event next summer. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - February 5Beckwith convicted of killing Medgar Evers 1994 On this day in 1994, white supremacist Byron De La Beckwith is convicted in the murder of African-American civil rights leader Medgar Evers, over 30 years after the crime occurred. Evers was gunned down in the driveway of his Jackson, Mississippi, home on June 12, 1963, while his wife, Myrlie, and the couple’s three small children were inside. Medgar Wiley Evers was born July 2, 1925, near Decatur, Mississippi, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After fighting for his country, he returned home to experience discrimination in the racially divided South, with its separate public facilities and services for blacks and whites. Evers graduated from Alcorn College in 1952 and began organizing local chapters of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). In 1954, after being rejected for admission to then-segregated University of Mississippi Law School, he became part of an NAACP campaign to desegregate the school. Later that year, Evers was named the NAACP’s first field secretary in Mississippi. He moved with his family to Jackson and worked to dismantle segregation, leading peaceful rallies, economic boycotts and voter registration drives around the state. In 1962, he helped James Meredith become the first African American to attend the University of Mississippi, a watershed event in the civil rights movement. As a result of his work, Evers received numerous threats and several attempts were made on his life before he was murdered in 1963 at the age of 37. Beckwith, a fertilizer salesman and Ku Klux Klan member widely believed to be the killer, was prosecuted for murder in 1964. However, two all-white (and all-male) juries deadlocked and refused to convict him. A second trial held in the same year resulted in a hung jury. The matter was dropped when it appeared that a conviction would be impossible. Myrlie Evers, who later became the first woman to chair the NAACP, refused to give up, pressing authorities to re-open the case. In 1989, documents came to light showing that jurors in the case were illegally screened.

Evelyn Hope arrived in this world on November 13th of 2017 and has endured more medical procedures than most of us would ever in a hundred lifetimes. Currently they are in California at a top medical facility with an amazing team of professionals doing everything they can to help her fight. This has been an unbelievable emotional experience for Felicia, Brett and their entire family. And now it’s our turn as a community to reach out and help! UMBT Bus Trip Upper Mount Bethel will be having its First Bus Trip of 2018 on Sunday, March 11th to the Philadelphia Flower Show at the Pennsylvania Convention Center! The Bus Trip and ticket for admission is $33 for adults, Students ages 17-24 is $25, and Children/Teenagers from ages 2-16 is $20. Under the age of 2 is free. You can purchase tickets by cash or check (payable to Upper Mount Bethel Township) at the Township Building or you can mail checks with guests names to Upper Mount Bethel Township (Att: Flower Show Bus Trip) PO BOX 520 Mount Bethel, PA 18343. Annual Earth Day Celebration hosted by Waste Management's Grand Central Environmental Education Center will be held Sunday, April 22 at 11 AM - 2 PM at Waste Management's Grand Central Environmental Education Center 891 Grand Central Road, Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania 18072 The event will include presentations by Bear Mountain Butterflies and the P.T. Breast Friends of PA Coach Bingo will be held Sunday, April 29 at 12 pm in the Charter's Banquest Facility at Plainfield Township Volunteer Fire Company in Wind Gap. Please come out and support Breast Friends of PA as we support the men and women of PA. Help us help those through the trauma of cancer one friend at a time. The afternoon will feature 15 games of bingo and 1 Buy in game grand finale. An authentic Coach handbag will be going to the individual winner of each game. All participants will have an opportunity to purchase 50/50, Raffle tickets and extra sets of bingo packs. All tickets will most likely sell out in pre sales. Admission is $30 per person pre-sale. Demonstration for the Slate Belt Heritage Center Bangor Quarry Hoist will be held Thursday, July 12 at 7 PM - 8 PM at 1st Street and Market Street, Bangor, Pennsylvania 18013 The Bangor Quarry Hoist has booked its first event! On Thursday, July 12, 2018, at 7 PM, it will operate for the Slate Belt Heritage Center's monthly program, which will occur at the Hoist. The program will detail the restoration of the hoist and feature a live demonstration. Although work on the hoist and pavilion is still underway, progress is so advanced that we can look forward to this event next summer. |
