They also long for emotional union with their beloved, seeking out ways to get closer and day-dreaming about their future together. Another love expert, Lucy Brown, a neuroscientist at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, says this drive to be with another person is sort of like our drive toward water and other things we need to survive. "Functional MRI studies show that primitive neural systems underlying drive, reward recognition and euphoria are active in almost everyone when they look at the face of their beloved and think loving thoughts. This puts romantic love in the company of survival systems, like those that make us hungry or thirsty," Brown told Live Science in 2011. "I think of romantic love as part of the human reproductive strategy. It helps us form pair-bonds, which help us survive. We were built to experience the magic of love and to be driven toward another." Feelings of empathy People who are in love generally feel a powerful sense of empathy toward their beloved, feeling the other person's pain as their own and being willing to sacrifice anything for the other person. Dealing with a Defiant Child![]() (CNN)Just about every day, Angela Estes, a New York mom, finds herself asking her 5-year-old son, "Why are you being so defiant?"
When she says it's time to get dressed and head to school or when she gives the sign that playground time has come to an end, he has other ideas, said a frustrated Estes. "He just wants to do what he wants to do, and I find it very hard to establish the authority that whether he wants to do it or not, it's what we're going to do," she said.Who can't relate to that? I remember a few months back when one of my daughters wouldn't listen to me. I resorted to the old "Go to your room," which didn't work, either. She continued to remain defiant and disobey me until I checked out of the situation and ignored her. Still, I wondered what the "right" way to handle her behavior actually was. Estes struggles with the same question and has even tried giving her son choices, such as saying that either they leave the playground or he is "choosing" not to have any screen time at home. "I sort of end up running out of things to take away, and then I get frustrated and angry, and I don't know what to do when I've run out of things and he still doesn't want to do it," she said. Parenting strategist and licensed family therapist Tricia Ferrara listened to Estes and wondered whether she's walking into situations with her son armed more with "hope" than a real plan to deal with his behavior. Ferrara's advice was for Estes to come up with a plan: Promise the playground for Friday afternoon but say that "we need to see 'big boy behavior' on the way to getting there." She said Estes could then come up with a few ways he could show that "big boy behavior," such as getting dressed by himself or putting his toys away. "If he's reluctant, remind him through that phrase. ... 'How about some "big boy behavior?" ' " Ferrara, who has been in practice in the Philadelphia area for more than a decade, said a family mantra can also serve as a trigger for children on what they need to do. "In my house, it was 'Fussing gets you nothing,' " she said. "So if [my kids] started to fuss about something, I would say, 'What does fussing get you?' And they would say, 'Nothing,' and then they would stop because it triggered them to say, 'Oh, yeah, I'm supposed to do X.' "The problem with labeling a child as 'defiant' Parents may be quick to label their children as "defiant," but experts say that fails to recognize that what we do as parents can impact our child's behavior. "The problem with 'defiance' is that it puts something in the child," said Alan Kazdin, professor of psychology and child psychiatry at Yale University. "It's not in the child. You can really make defiant children very compliant, actually, many of them, even most of them. It's in what you do to get that compliance." Kazdin, who is also director of the Yale Parenting Center, said that if a parent says a child is defiant, it means the child has the problem and the parent is fine. But the other way of thinking about that is the child didn't listen to the parent when the parent asked the child to do something, he said. If you say "Put on your jacket; we're going out" while pointing at your child, you are likely to have less luck than if you put "please" in front of it: "Please put your jacket on; we're going out." "The tone of voice is the issue, not the 'please,' " said Kazdin, That is why a working parent coming home after a stressful day is more likely to encounter some defiance from a child, he said. After a parent comes home and the child is being defiant, the parent might say, "This is all I need after the day I've had." We need to help our kids practice and practice with them, said Kazdin. It won't happen overnight, he said. "The issue is, you have to build the behavior gradually," said Kazdin. "That's the critical part. ... Practice, repeat it, practice." Free Dinner

Senator Mario Scavello (R-40) applauded yesterday’s Senate passage of legislation he is co-sponsoring to generate significant economic development statewide, create jobs and enhance the state’s clean energy portfolio. Senate Bill 234 lays the groundwork for counties and municipalities to create Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing programs. PACE financing allows business owners, contractors, and private investors to arrange long-term loans that are repaid through the property taxes on a building, allowing for limited or no upfront cost for the business. The inclusion of loan payments in the building’s property taxes relegates responsibility of payment to the current owner of the building for the duration of the loan. Senator Scavello said the property tax mechanism, which is administered by local governments, is attractive to the business owner, who is not forced to tie up valuable capital or be bound to a property for an extended period, as well as the investor, who can count on regular payments towards the loan. The all-around incentives of the PACE program have made it a popular plan that has been authorized in 33 states and the District of Columbia. Senator Scavello, as Majority Chair of the Senate Community, Economic & Recreational Development Committee, worked with the bill’s sponsors, Sen. John Blake (D-22) and Sen. Guy Reschenthaler (R-37), to bring together dozens of stakeholders from the business, labor and clean energy communities to develop the legislation. “I want to extend thanks to Senator Scavello of the Community, Economic and Recreational Development Committee. Senator Scavello got involved with stakeholder input and trying to broker good language for a good bill and I have gratitude for his work,” said Senator Blake. “I want to thank Senator Blake and Senator Scavello for working with me on this bipartisan, commonsense piece of legislation. Both were tremendous help and this legislation would not have passed without my two colleagues,” said Senator Reschenthaler. “There are many businesses in my district that have been able to capitalize on the benefits of solar. Some of those businesses were able to afford the upgrades, but others can’t, and this program helps those who do not have the funds readily available, but can afford a long-term loan,” Scavello said. “Statewide, this will mean significant economic development and job creation through enhancement of the state’s clean energy portfolio. In addition, many commercial, industrial and residential buildings throughout Pennsylvania will see savings as they are made more efficient by energy upgrades.” Senate Bill 234 was sent to the House of Representatives for consideration. SNAP Healthy Incentives Act Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright recently introduced the bipartisan SNAP Healthy Incentives Act, a bill that would create incentives for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients to purchase fruits and vegetables. From 2011 to 2013, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Food and Nutrition Service implemented a pilot program in Hampden County, Massachusetts that evaluated financial incentives for SNAP recipients to purchase healthy food. The Healthy Incentives Pilot (HIP) refunded SNAP recipients 30 cents for every dollar they spent on fruits and vegetables. This generated a 25 percent increase in the consumption of fruits and vegetables among the test group. The SNAP Healthy Incentives Act would expand HIP to all SNAP recipients. “Unfortunately, the increase in healthy food prices have put fruits and vegetables out of reach for many SNAP recipients. This bipartisan bill revamps SNAP by targeting the benefits towards healthy foods,” said Rep. Cartwright. “Increased fruit and vegetable intake can help reduce rates of heart disease and prevent several cancers. Not only does this alleviate health care costs, but it can save lives.” DaVinci Science Center News The Da Vinci Science Center will be overflowing with animals, insects, and fish during February. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - February 3Gonzales becomes first Hispanic U.S. attorney general 2005 On February 3, 2005, Alberto Gonzales won Senate confirmation as the nation’s first Hispanic attorney general despite protests over his record on torture. The Senate approved his nomination on a largely party-line vote of 60-36, reflecting a split between Republicans and Democrats over whether the administration’s counterterrorism policies had led to the abuse of prisoners in Iraq and elsewhere. Shortly after the Senate vote, Vice President Dick Cheney swore in Gonzales as attorney general in a small ceremony in the Roosevelt Room at the White House. President Bush, who was traveling, called to congratulate him. Gonzales was born in 1955 in San Antonio, Texas, the son of migrant workers and grew up in a small, crowded home in Houston without hot water or a telephone. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1973 after graduating high school. Following a few years of service, Gonzales attended the U.S. Air Force Academy. ![]()
