Icy conditions for the morning commute
Icy conditions have been reported on area roads, and will continue to be possible especially on untreated roads and bridges through the morning commute. Although the precipitation is winding down from west to east, standing water from the earlier rain may freeze as temperatures continue to drop through the day. Drivers are urged to exercise caution. People who are in love report that they spend, on average, more than 85 percent of their waking hours musing over their "love object," according to Fisher. Intrusive thinking, as this form of obsessive behavior is called, may result from decreased levels of central serotonin in the brain, a condition that has been associated with obsessive behavior previously. (Obsessive-compulsive disorder is treated with serotonin-reuptake inhibitors. Emotional dependency People in love regularly exhibit signs of emotional dependency on their relationship, including possessiveness, jealousy, fear of rejection, and separation anxiety. For instance, Fisher and her colleagues looked at the brains of individuals viewing photos of a rejected loved one, or someone they were still in love with after being rejected by that person. The functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) showed activation in several brain areas, including forebrain areas like the cingulate gyrus that have been shown to play a role in cocaine cravings. "Activation of areas involved in cocaine addiction may help explain the obsessive behaviors associated with rejection in love," the researchers wrote in 2010 in the Journal of Neurophysiology. Groundhog Day........Punxsutawney Phil![]() Punxsutawney Phil is the name of a groundhog in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. On February 2 (Groundhog Day) each year, the town of Punxsutawney celebrates the legendary groundhog with a festive atmosphere of music and food. During the ceremony, which begins well before the winter sunrise, Phil emerges from his temporary home on Gobbler's Knob, located in a rural area about 2 miles (3 km) south-east of town. According to the tradition, if Phil sees his shadow and returns to his hole, he has predicted six more weeks of winter-like weather. If Phil does not see his shadow, he has predicted an "early spring." The date of Phil's prognostication is known as Groundhog Day in the United States and Canada, and has been celebrated since 1887. Punxsutawney Phil became an international celebrity thanks to the 1993 movie Groundhog Day.
A select group, called the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle, takes care of Phil year-round and also plans the annual ceremony. Members of the Inner Circle are recognizable by their top hats and tuxedos. The Vice President of the Inner Circle prepares two scrolls in advance of the actual ceremony, one proclaiming six more weeks of winter and one proclaiming an early spring. At day break, on February 2, Punxsutawney Phil awakens from his burrow on Gobbler's Knob, is helped to the top of the stump by his handlers, and explains to the President of the Inner Circle, in a language known as "Groundhogese", whether or not he has seen his shadow. The President of the Inner Circle, the only person able to understand Groundhogese through his possession of an ancient acacia wood cane, then interprets Phil's message, and directs the Vice President to read the proper scroll to the anxiously anticipating crowd gathered on Gobbler's Knob and the masses of "phaithful phollowers" tuned in to live broadcasts around the world. National Wear Red Day®![]() Support Go Red For Women by participating in National Wear Red Day® on Friday, February 2, 2018 and donate to help fund research during American Heart Month.
Why Go Red? Cardiovascular disease in the U.S. kill approximately one woman every 80 seconds. The good news is that 80 percent of cardiac events may be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. Go Red For Women advocates for more research and swifter action for women’s heart health. That’s why this year we are asking that you wear red on National Wear Red Day® and Donate to Go Red For Woman. By doing so you help support educational programs to increase women’s awareness and critical research to discover scientific knowledge about cardiovascular health. Go Red For Women is a movement that starts with you. Lead by example and make the time to “Know Your Numbers.” It’s knowledge that could save your life. Five numbers, that all women should know to take control of their heart health are: Total Cholesterol, HDL (good) Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI). Knowing these numbers can help women and their healthcare provider determine their risk for developing cardiovascular diseases. It’s time for all women to learn the most critical numbers in their life — their hearts depend on it. "Ripping off the Offers" Groundhog Day Reunion
On Friday, February 2nd, 2018 at 10 a.m. Landowners, Municipal Officials and Concerned Citizens will meet at Guy Wagner's Farm located at 207 Field Drive, Bethlehem, PA 18020. Landowners and community members from Northampton, Bucks and Lehigh Counties are gathering in solidarity at Guy Wagner’s Farm, one of the many properties threatened by eminent domain, to rip up the final easement acquisition offers of compensation sent to property owners by PennEast Pipeline Company, LLC. Directly impacted residents and concerned citizens will be testifying to the unjust takings of private property, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s inadequate environmental review and the inherent dangers this project presents to their communities. Community members and press are encouraged to attend. The PennEast Pipeline has been granted a Conditional Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. You can find the details of the FERC Certificate at https://elibrary.ferc.gov/idmws/file_list.asp?accession_num=20180119-3110. As a result, landowners who have refused to sign easement agreements with PennEast up until this point have now received their final offers of financial compensation from PennEast Pipeline LLC. PennEast must have an Order for Possession from the Federal Court before stepping foot on any land on which an easement agreement has not already been signed. The Conditional Certificate was granted although the Delaware River Basin Commission, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the Army Corps of Engineers must still review the project. A final order from FERC cannot be issued prior to the completion of these permit processes. In the Conditional Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity, FERC Commissioner Glick dissented, making note of the questionable “public benefit” of the PennEast Pipeline project, stating, “…there will not necessarily be any restriction on a pipeline developer’s ability to exercise eminent domain while the Commission waits to confirm that the pipeline is in the public interest.” In fact, in the FERC order, Commissioner Glick makes a note of the fact that PennEast’s application lacks the evidence that he believes “…is important to making the public interest determination.” For More Information Contact: Guy Wagner, gww52@hotmail.com, (484) 239-0493; Tara Zrinski, taramichele75@gmail.com, (610) 349-9858; Priscilla deLeon, deleon.priscilla@gmail.com, (610) 216-0566 or Arianne Elinich, Bucks County CCAP, BucksCCAP@gmail.com, (484) 357-7474. SNAP Healthy Incentives Act Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright recently introduced the bipartisan SNAP Healthy Incentives Act, a bill that would create incentives for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients to purchase fruits and vegetables. From 2011 to 2013, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Food and Nutrition Service implemented a pilot program in Hampden County, Massachusetts that evaluated financial incentives for SNAP recipients to purchase healthy food. The Healthy Incentives Pilot (HIP) refunded SNAP recipients 30 cents for every dollar they spent on fruits and vegetables. This generated a 25 percent increase in the consumption of fruits and vegetables among the test group. The SNAP Healthy Incentives Act would expand HIP to all SNAP recipients. “Unfortunately, the increase in healthy food prices have put fruits and vegetables out of reach for many SNAP recipients. This bipartisan bill revamps SNAP by targeting the benefits towards healthy foods,” said Rep. Cartwright. “Increased fruit and vegetable intake can help reduce rates of heart disease and prevent several cancers. Not only does this alleviate health care costs, but it can save lives.” DaVinci Science Center News The Da Vinci Science Center will be overflowing with animals, insects, and fish during February. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - February 2First Groundhog Day 1887 On this day in 1887, Groundhog Day, featuring a rodent meteorologist, is celebrated for the first time at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. According to tradition, if a groundhog comes out of its hole on this day and sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather; no shadow means an early spring. Groundhog Day has its roots in the ancient Christian tradition of Candlemas Day, when clergy would bless and distribute candles needed for winter. The candles represented how long and cold the winter would be. Germans expanded on this concept by selecting an animal–the hedgehog–as a means of predicting weather. Once they came to America, German settlers in Pennsylvania continued the tradition, although they switched from hedgehogs to groundhogs, which were plentiful in the Keystone State. Groundhogs, also called woodchucks and whose scientific name is Marmota monax, typically weigh 12 to 15 pounds and live six to eight years. They eat vegetables and fruits, whistle when they’re frightened or looking for a mate and can climb trees and swim. They go into hibernation in the late fall; during this time, their body temperatures drop significantly, their heartbeats slow from 80 to five beats per minute and they can lose 30 percent of their body fat. In February, male groundhogs emerge from their burrows to look for a mate (not to predict the weather) before going underground again. They come out of hibernation for good in March. ![]()
