Alcohol Affects How Well You Sleep
A glass of wine may be a pre-bedtime routine for some, but it's important to understand how the alcohol affects your sleep. For most people, one serving of alcohol before bed will have no effect on sleeping. But more than one drink might — alcohol helps people fall asleep, but makes it more likely they'll wake up during the night.
You will sleep faster, but not better, because alcohol interferes with REM sleep. Additionally, people often use an alcoholic drink as a means to fall asleep, particularly if they've drank lots of caffeine during the day. This combination may seem to work on the surface, but it is not a healthy in the long run, Gish said. Ahead of the state's Highway Safety Law Awareness week, which runs from February 18-25, the agencies advised drivers of the following updates and safety reminders
•Pennsylvania's "Blind Pedestrians" law mandates that the driver of a vehicle yield the right of way to any totally or partially blind pedestrian carrying a visible white cane or accompanied by a guide dog. The driver of the vehicle shall take any precaution necessary, including bringing the vehicle to a stop, to avoid injuring or endangering the pedestrian. This is a summary offense and in punishable by a fine of not less than $50 nor more than $150. •"Prohibiting Use of Hearing Impairment Devices" law prohibits any driver from wearing headphones while behind the wheel. This section does not prohibit the use of a headset in conjunction with a cell phone which provides sound through one ear and allows surrounding sounds to be heard with the other. Wearing head phones while behind the wheel limits the driver's ability to hear sirens belonging to emergency responders. •Title 75, Section 3112 under "Traffic Control Signals," dictates laws surrounding traffic lights. As part of a 2016 amendment, the law includes instruction on what can be done if a driver believes the traffic light is not functioning properly. This includes when the light's "sensor" does not detect the vehicle. In this case, drivers are instructed to stop in the same manner as a stop sign and can proceed when it is safe to do so. •The "Unattended Motor Vehicle" law limits where a vehicle can be left running and unattended. The law states that a person cannot leave a vehicle unattended while the engine is running or while the key is in the ignition. The law, however, does not apply to private property such as private driveways. "Traffic laws are enforced with the goal of keeping the public safe on the road," said Colonel Blocker. "Law Safety Awareness Week offers an excellent opportunity to educate drivers about some lesser-known regulations. It also serves as a reminder that the most important safety steps we can take are to wear a seatbelt – every trip, every time – and to never drive impaired." Showtimes: 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Lineworker Info Session at NCC NCC will hold an information session about its lineworker program on February 19 at 5:00 p.m. at the Bethlehem Campus. The session will be held in Alumni 130 A – D. The session will give prospective students the opportunity to meet the instructors, learn about the program and gain information about potential sources of financial assistance for qualified candidates. This hands-on, non-credit course is taught by instructors with lineworker experience and has been popular since its inception in 2013. It prepares students for entry-level linework in the electrical and telecommunications fields. During the 12 week course, which includes 375 hours of instruction, students will learn to safely and efficiently climb 40m floor utility poles, construct assemblies while on poles, use a variety of hand tools and understand the basics of electricity. December 2017 - Staff members from HDOnTap and Codorus State Park worked through the cold and wind to replace and rewire cables at the nest site. Some of the nest had fallen. In the summer of 1846, in the midst of a Western-bound fever sweeping the United States, 89 people–including 31 members of the Donner and Reed families–set out in a wagon train from Springfield, Illinois. After arriving at Fort Bridger, Wyoming, the emigrants decided to avoid the usual route and try a new trail recently blazed by California promoter Lansford Hastings, the so-called “Hastings Cutoff.” After electing George Donner as their captain, the party departed Fort Bridger in mid-July. The shortcut was nothing of the sort: It set the Donner Party back nearly three weeks and cost them much-needed supplies. After suffering great hardships in the Wasatch Mountains, the Great Salt Lake Desert and along the Humboldt River, they finally reached the Sierra Nevada Mountains in early October. Despite the lateness of the season, the emigrants continued to press on, and on October 28 they camped at Truckee Lake, located in the high mountains 21 kilometers northwest of Lake Tahoe. Overnight, an early winter storm blanketed the ground with snow, blocking the mountain pass and trapping the Donner Party. Most of the group stayed near the lake–now known as Donner Lake–while the Donner family and others made camp six miles away at Alder Creek. Building makeshift tents out of their wagons and killing their oxen for food, they hoped for a thaw that never came. Fifteen of the stronger emigrants, later known as the Forlorn Hope, set out west on snowshoes for Sutter’s Fort near San Francisco on December 16. Three weeks later, after harsh weather and lack of supplies killed several of the expedition and forced the others to resort to cannibalism, seven survivors reached a Native American village.

Senator Mario Scavello (R-40) and the American Legion will be holding a Veterans Assistance Day on Wednesday, February 21 at the senator’s Pen Argyl district office. This service is offered on the third Wednesday of each month. The district office is located at 2 N. Robinson Avenue, Pen Argyl, PA 18072. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a service officer with the American Legion Pennsylvania Department will be on site to assist veterans with issues including: compensation and pension claims, education benefits, enrollment in the VA health care system, burial and survivor benefits, state benefits, and obtaining military personnel and medical records. Gearing Up for Kindergarten
The Bangor Area School District will be offering the spring Gearing Up for Kindergarten program beginning this March. The program will be held at the Washington Elementary School on Tuesdays and the Five Points Elementary School on Wednesdays from March 6 to March 27, 2018 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. The Gearing Up for Kindergarten program is intended for families with a child who will be entering kindergarten in August 2018. The classes run for an hour and a half each night. This program offers parent/child activities, as well as separate child preparation and parent education classes. Parent topics include: Learning Styles/School Readiness, Temperament, Early Literacy/Math, Social/Emotional Development, Nurturance and Prevention Tools, Nutrition, Safety, and Parent’s Role in School Success. Harlem Wizards Basketball Game
The Bangor Area Middle School PTSO (Parent, Teacher, Student, Organization) is hosting its 1st Annual Harlem Wizards Basketball Game on April 7, 2018. While the PTSO is fairly new, we are running this fundraiser in hopes that we can raise enough money to assist the school with future purchases that are not in their budget such as: new library books, school supplies and equipment, funding field trips and assemblies, as well as assist with purchases for the school dances throughout the year. We wanted to take a new approach to fundraising and offer a family friendly event that would bring the community together for a great cause and promote wellness at the same time. We will have our own team consisting of teachers and staff from each school in the district as well as some High School players. Our team will be playing against the Harlem Wizards. Breast Friends of PA Coach Bingo will be held Sunday, April 29 at 12 pm in the Charter's Banquest Facility at Plainfield Township Volunteer Fire Company in Wind Gap. Demonstration for the Slate Belt Heritage Center Bangor Quarry Hoist will be held Thursday, July 12 at 7 PM - 8 PM at 1st Street and Market Street, Bangor, Pennsylvania 18013 The Bangor Quarry Hoist has booked its first event! On Thursday, July 12, 2018, at 7 PM, it will operate for the Slate Belt Heritage Center's monthly program, which will occur at the Hoist. The program will detail the restoration of the hoist and feature a live demonstration. Slater Youth Baseball Workouts
Slater Youth Baseball Association Pre-season workouts start THIS week for interested players at the gym at the Tuscarora Inn in Mt. Bethel on the following dates and times. *Players ages 9 and 10 as of May 1, 2018 may attend the Minors sessions. *Players age 11 and 12 may attend the Majors sessions. Dates: February 12, 14, 26, 28 . March 5, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, 28 *Minors will be held from 6-7:30pm . *Majors will be held from 7:30-9pm Please note these sessions are limited to the first 25 players due to limited space. Also very important, please check the Facebook page on each scheduled date to ensure there is no cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances or inclement weather.
