First Responders Honored at Dinner![]() by Larry Cory
It's 3am on a cold, winter morning when the fire whistle sounds. Fire personnel immediately respond to the site not knowing exactly what they will find. It could be a false alarm, maybe a gas leak, maybe a structure in flames or some other issue. Regardless of the emergency, fire fighters are expected to resolve the matter.. In the aftermath they return home, grab a bite for breakfast and head to work. These men and women have other jobs - they are not professional fire fighters. They are your friends and neighbors, or the man or woman around the corner who VOLUNTEER their service to the community. Some literally must risk their lives to save other lives and their property. We in the media tend to focus on the size of the fire, the damage, and other lurid details. Somewhere in the story there may be a sentence or two about how the effort of the fire fighters helped put out the fire. - nothing more. Monday night, local First Responders got more than a sentence or two at a First Responders' Recognition dinner held at the Broadway Pub in downtown Bangor. There were several fire companies and related organizations that attended filling both rooms at the pub to near capacity. Among them, Rescue Fire Co. from Bangor had several representatives, including three men with a combined 150 years of experience. Forty-six year veteran Larry Lobb, Larry Rondinelli (50 years) and Merlin Repsher (54 years) are still active Rescue members. (See Inset) Another veteran fireman at a nearby table recently survived a near-fatal heart attack and has returned to serve again. It's compelling stories like these that should make us all feel fortunate to have dedicated public volunteers ready to help at moment's notice. This was the second year for the event and there are hopes that it may become an annual affair. It began last year as a way of recognizing the efforts of many volunteer fire fighters who battled and extinguished a fire in downtown Bangor on a Sunday morning. News Shorts.........
Bison vs. Buffalo: What's the Difference?![]() Burly, shaggy bison (Bison bison), the North American hoofed mammals that, for many people, embody the American West, are often referred to as buffalo.
But even though they are in the same family group as Old World buffalo species — the Asian water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) and the African cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer) — bison are not closely related to those species, making the common name "buffalo" misleading. But even though bison and buffalo are similarly large, cattle-like animals, there are striking physical differences that distinguish them. The American bison — which can weigh up to 2,000 lbs. (900 kilograms) — sports an unusually massive head and a considerable shoulder hump, both of which are covered with thick, woolly fur. The enormous, heavy muscles in the hump allow bison to use their heads as powerful snowplows in the winter, pushing aside masses of snow by swinging their heads from side to side, the NPS reported. Bison's heads can also be used as battering rams, to drive off predators or to compete for females, according to the NPS. By comparison, the buffalo of Africa and Asia have no hump whatsoever, and their skulls are smaller than those of bison. But while they may come up short on head size, both buffalo species more than make up for that in the breadth of their impressive horns. Asian buffalo have large, crescent-shaped horns that curve upward and can span over 6 feet (2 meters) in length, according to the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL). Wild males can weigh over 2,600 lbs. (1,200 kg), though domesticated Asian buffalo, which are widespread across Asia, typically weigh about half as much as that — around 1,200 lbs. (550 kg), EOL explained. African cape buffalo are native to the savannas and grasslands of southern, western, eastern and central Africa, and the animals usually congregate near water, according to the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF). Males are equipped with a head shield from which the horns sprout, sweeping downward before curling back up again, and can weigh as much as 1,500 lbs. (680 kg), the AWF reported. Currently, about 10,000 wild bison still roam 12 states in North America, where the animals forage for an average of 9 to 12 hours each day for weeds, grasses and leafy plants, according to the DOI By Live Science Advice from a Pediatrician![]() With the flu season breaking records, everyone is desperately trying to keep the virus at bay.
Pediatricians especially are seeing huge traffic in their offices as the number of children who have died from the flu continues to rise: 63 have passed away so far. "This year is pretty bad," Dr. Shilpa Patel, a pediatrician in Rockleigh, New Jersey, told NBC News. "Parents are panicking." Beyond getting a flu shot, here are Patel's seven most important tips for families and kids: 1. If your children are sick, keep them home "Don't send them to school," Patel urged. "They infect everybody else and we really don't want the parents to be doing that. So keep them home if they're sick, and go to your pediatrician rather than clogging up the emergency rooms." Kids can generally go back to school if they've had 24 hours without a fever, vomiting or diarrhea. But use your instinct: If you think your child doesn't look right, stay home or take them to the doctor, she advised. 2. Go ahead and see the pediatrician After hearing that dozens of kids have died from the flu, it's no wonder many parents want to see the doctor the moment their child gets a fever, or is coughing and sneezing. "That's fine because a lot of times, I just say to the parents, 'Look, if you're worried, just bring them in, let me listen to the hearts and lungs and make sure there's no infection.' That's the biggest thing that you're worried about with flu," Patel said. 3. Teach your child how to cough or sneeze properly Patel tells kids to pull their shirt out and sneeze or cough into it to prevent the virus from spreading. Coughing or sneezing into their elbow can work, but kids sometimes miss the target! If anybody else is coughing or sneezing, also pull your shirt out, cover your face and walk the other way, she advises. 4. Tell your children not to touch their faces Avoid the T-zone, which includes your eyes, nose and mouth. Keep repeating those instructions: It may take a while for the message to sink in with kids. 5. Don't kiss anybody on the face Instead, kiss the back of the head, especially when it comes to newborns and younger babies. "If you are going to be sick, you're contagious three days before you get your cold symptoms," Patel warns. 6. Clean, clean, clean To prevent the flu from spreading, Patel's office staff "glove up and we Lysol everything" — most any surface in the room where the sick child was. Do the same in your home. After Patel washes her hands, she takes the paper towel, wipes her hands, then turns off the faucet with the towel and tosses it straight into the trash to prevent germs from getting back on her clean hands. 7. Watch your child's reaction to a fever If you give your child a medication like Tylenol or Motrin, and the fever calms down, he or she should perk up and begin to act normally again, Patel said. If that's the case, you can probably relax. If, on the other hand, the fever has come down, but your child is lethargic and not moving, he or she needs to be seen by a doctor immediately, Patel noted.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - February 15The Maine explodes 1898 A massive explosion of unknown origin sinks the battleship USS Maine in Cuba’s Havana harbor, killing 260 of the fewer than 400 American crew members aboard. One of the first American battleships, the Maine weighed more than 6,000 tons and was built at a cost of more than $2 million. Ostensibly on a friendly visit, the Maine had been sent to Cuba to protect the interests of Americans there after a rebellion against Spanish rule broke out in Havana in January. An official U.S. Naval Court of Inquiry ruled in March that the ship was blown up by a mine, without directly placing the blame on Spain. Much of Congress and a majority of the American public expressed little doubt that Spain was responsible and called for a declaration of war. ![]()

Harlem Wizards Basketball Game
The Bangor Area Middle School PTSO (Parent, Teacher, Student, Organization) is hosting its 1st Annual Harlem Wizards Basketball Game on April 7, 2018. While the PTSO is fairly new, we are running this fundraiser in hopes that we can raise enough money to assist the school with future purchases that are not in their budget such as: new library books, school supplies and equipment, funding field trips and assemblies, as well as assist with purchases for the school dances throughout the year. We wanted to take a new approach to fundraising and offer a family friendly event that would bring the community together for a great cause and promote wellness at the same time. We will have our own team consisting of teachers and staff from each school in the district as well as some High School players. Our team will be playing against the Harlem Wizards. To purchase tickets online you can go to: https://www.harlemwizards.com/schedule-tickets/ Find the April calendar and click on April 7th, Bangor, PA.
