Slaters Playing for Fourth Straight Title
by Larry Cory A few weeks ago, Bangor crushed Wilson 67-43. Last night the Slaters played Wilson in a Colonial semi final, hoping to advance to the Colonial League final for a chance at winning their fourth consecutive championship and the fifth in the last six years. Oh, and by the way, the Slaters would be the first league team to win four straight titles. With Wilson being the first hurdle to clear on their way to a championship, it would have appeared as though the task would have been easy based on their previous meeting. This time, however, the Slaters were minus two starters. Ben Holland was on the bench nursing an ankle injury and Isaiah Jones was unavailable. Talk prior to the game centered on how Bangor would overcome this adversity. Who would step up? Part of the answer came early on as Bernard Davis and Tony Jones were a force at each end of the court. By game's end, Davis had scored 19 points, pulled down 12 rebounds, blocked several shots and intimidated several would-be shooters. Jones, despite some leg cramps later in the game, scored 14 points and had 12 rebounds in addition to playing a significant role in the Slaters' ability to get through Wilson's 2-2-1 full court pressure. Bangor jumped out to leads of 6-0 and 22-14 before the Warriors defensive pressure forced several turnovers, giving the Slaters a scant 29-25 lead at the half. Three weeks ago, Bangor outscored Wilson 23-4 to start the second half, and again last night, Bangor surged after intermission eventually gaining a 54-34 advantage on a 25-9 run. Junior Guard Noah Berger came off the bench to make a huge contribution in the second half, helping the Slaters fends off the Warriors' pressure and contributing seven points. Bo Myers was also an important factor, hitting a trio of threes, scoring 14 points. and directing the Slaters' offense. Bangor will play Southern Lehigh 8:00pm Friday night at Freedom for the championship. These members Washington Twp. First Responders Honored at Dinnerby Larry Cory
It's 3am on a cold, winter morning when the fire whistle sounds. Fire personnel immediately respond to the site not knowing exactly what they will find. It could be a false alarm, maybe a gas leak, maybe a structure in flames or some other issue. Regardless of the emergency, fire fighters are expected to resolve the matter.. In the aftermath they return home, grab a bite for breakfast and head to work. These men and women have other jobs - they are not professional fire fighters. They are your friends and neighbors, or the man or woman around the corner who VOLUNTEER their service to the community. Some literally must risk their lives to save other lives and their property. We in the media tend to focus on the size of the fire, the damage, and other lurid details. Somewhere in the story there may be a sentence or two about how the effort of the fire fighters helped put out the fire. - nothing more. Monday night, local First Responders got more than a sentence or two at a First Responders' Recognition dinner held at the Broadway Pub in downtown Bangor. There were several fire companies and related organizations that attended filling both rooms at the pub to near capacity. Among them, Rescue Fire Co. from Bangor had several representatives, including three men with a combined 150 years of experience. Forty-six year veteran Larry Lobb, Larry Rondinelli (50 years) and Merlin Repsher (54 years) are still active Rescue members. (See Inset) Another veteran fireman at a nearby table recently survived a near-fatal heart attack and has returned to serve again. It's compelling stories like these that should make us all feel fortunate to have dedicated public volunteers ready to help at moment's notice. This was the second year for the event and there are hopes that it may become an annual affair. It began last year as a way of recognizing the efforts of many volunteer fire fighters who battled and extinguished a fire in downtown Bangor on a Sunday morning. The Problem of Harassing Phone Calls
The House has unanimously passed legislation that would increase penalties for those found guilty of caller identification spoofing.
House Bill 979 would make it a misdemeanor for any person to cause false caller identification information to be displayed on a recipient’s telephone, with the intent to harass or defraud the call recipient.
Spoofing occurs when individuals use technology to make it appear that a call is coming from a number or business other than that of the actual caller. Spoofing can be used to defraud, harass or induce call recipients into divulging sensitive or confidential information, especially senior citizens.

The Gearing Up for Kindergarten program is intended for families with a child who will be entering kindergarten in August 2018. The classes run for an hour and a half each night. This program offers parent/child activities, as well as separate child preparation and parent education classes. Harlem Wizards Basketball Game
The Bangor Area Middle School PTSO (Parent, Teacher, Student, Organization) is hosting its 1st Annual Harlem Wizards Basketball Game on April 7, 2018. While the PTSO is fairly new, we are running this fundraiser in hopes that we can raise enough money to assist the school with future purchases that are not in their budget such as: new library books, school supplies and equipment, funding field trips and assemblies, as well as assist with purchases for the school dances throughout the year. We wanted to take a new approach to fundraising and offer a family friendly event that would bring the community together for a great cause and promote wellness at the same time. We will have our own team consisting of teachers and staff from each school in the district as well as some High School players. Our team will be playing against the Harlem Wizards.
To purchase tickets online you can go to: https://www.harlemwizards.com/schedule-tickets/ Find the April calendar and click on April 7th, Bangor, PA. Any businesses interested in being a sponsor for this event can contact Debbie Smith, 610-751-7692 or Kim Gambale, 484-241-0441 or email: [email protected]

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - February 14
St. Valentine beheaded 278 A.D.
On February 14 around the year 278A.D., Valentine, a holy priest in Rome in the days of Emperor Claudius II, was executed.
Under the rule of Claudius the Cruel, Rome was involved in many unpopular and bloody campaigns. The emperor had to maintain a strong army, but was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. Claudius believed that Roman men were unwilling to join the army because of their strong attachment to their wives and families.
To get rid of the problem, Claudius banned all marriages and engagements in Rome. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.
When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Valentine was arrested and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. The sentence was carried out on February 14, on or about the year 270.

Harlem Wizards Basketball Game
The Bangor Area Middle School PTSO (Parent, Teacher, Student, Organization) is hosting its 1st Annual Harlem Wizards Basketball Game on April 7, 2018.
