Flood Watch Tonight Thru Tonight
Periods of rain are expected through today, which may be heavy at times. The axis of heaviest rain will shift slowly northward today, from Delmarva and southern New Jersey early this morning to the I-95 corridor and the Lehigh Valley late this morning and this afternoon. Low-lying flooding is likely where the heaviest rain occurs. In addition, rainfall amounts may result in flooding on area streams, creeks, and rivers by this afternoon and evening.

Bangor Girls Advance to Semisby Larry Cory
If ever a team qualified for the Colonial League semi finals on sheer determination it is the Bangor Girls Basketball team which defeated Palisades Saturday night 41-34 to earn a semi-final berth versus top -seeded Southern Lehigh in a game to be played 7:30 Wednesday night at Catasauqua. Notre Dame will play Wilson in the first semi final game with the winners meeting for the championship Friday night at a site to be determined. This Slater team is seldom, if ever, out-hustled from the opening tap to the final buzzer. And it's that drive that has been a key factor in winning 16 of their last 19 games. Add that to some key shots from long distance and you have a team with a lot of momentum going into the playoffs. Last night, Bangor's pesty zone defense forced several turnovers and off-balance shots in holding the Pirates to 34 points They rebounded at both ends of the court and dove on the floor for loose balls. Offensively, they raced the ball up the court, looking for a driving lay-up or a quick shot beyond the arc. Anyone who has seen this team play during the season has become accustomed to their long-range accuracy, hitting as many as 11 threes in a game on one occasion. Saturday night, was no exception. Megan Barone’s early three-pointer put the Slaters on top. Casey Walsh added another three in the first period, helping the Slaters to 6-0 run extending into the second quarter and giving Bangor an 11-9 edge. Morgan Karasek later scored on an offensive rebound as the Slaters moved to a 14-11 lead which they would never surrender and led 21-18 at the half. After intermission, the Slaters' momentum continued as they outscored the Pirates 11-5 to start the third quarter. Barone hit her second three of the game to start the half and Madaline Minner hit a pair of threes as the Slaters took their largest lead of the game at 32-23. The Pirates would only cut the to five points once during the remainder of the game. Bangor was on top 33-27 entering the final period until Emily Labar converted a nifty spin move off the low post for a 35-27 lead. Ohland made three of four from the line to close out the scoring, giving her a game total of 6 for 10. Barone led the scoring with 10 points followed by Karasek with 9. (Upper Left) Brie Ohland dives to save the ball from going out of bounds. (Upper Right) Morgan Karasek dives on a loose ball. Meghan Barone (Lower Left) and Madaline Minner (Lower Right) hit a combined four three pointers during the Slaters' 41-34 win over Palisades in a quarter final game played in William Pensyl Gym at Bangor High School Saturday night. Herpes Infections Declining![]() Herpes infections have declined in the United States in recent years, according to a new report. However, about half of teens and adults under age 50 are still infected with the oral herpes virus, and about 1 in 8 have an infection with the genital herpes virus.
The new report, published (Feb. 7) by the National Center for Health Statistics of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), analyzed information from people in the U.S. ages 14 to 49 who had been screened for herpes in 2015 and 2016, as part of a national survey. The screening involved a blood test that looked for antibodies against two types of herpes viruses: herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), which most commonly causes oral herpes (cold sores), and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), which causes genital herpes. The results showed that, overall, about 48 percent of people in this age group had HVS-1, and about 12 percent had HSV-2. Infections were more common among older age groups — for example, 60 percent of people ages 40 to 49 had HVS-1, and 21 percent had HVS-2, while 27 percent of people ages 14 to 19 had HVS-1, and 0.8 percent had HVS-2, the report said. For HSV-2, "other studies that have seen a decline in HSV-2 in their populations have suggested that the increase in safe-sex practices in the post-AIDS-pandemic [period] may contribute to the decline in this virus, which is sexually transmitted," McQuillan said. (Previously, researchers documented a 19 percent drop in HSV-2 infections among Americans ages 14 to 49 from 1988 to 2004.) Although herpes infections are lifelong, people with infections may not always have symptoms, because the virus can remain "dormant" for long periods, with symptoms flaring up from time to time, according to the National Institutes of Health. Symptoms of herpes infection can include sores in the mouth (for HSV-1) or genitals (for HSV-2). These sores can turn into blisters that become itchy and painful before healing, the NIH says. Original article on Live Science.By Live Science Brace your Phone for New Emojis![]() Are you ready for a ton of new emoji? If not, you better hurry to prepare yourself and your phone.
Announced Wednesday by the Unicode Consortium, a group that helps make open standards to allow people to use computers around the world, the new emoji group finalized today will hit phones in the second half of this year. While that may seem to be too long a wait, hopefully the idea of new hairstyles for men and women (including red-haired, curly-haired, white-haired and bald), various skin tones and multiple genders for a new superhero and supervillain emoji can tide you over. If that doesn't work then perhaps the idea of a bagel, cupcake or teddy bear emoji might. Or new animal emoji like a kangaroo, lobster and llama. Or maybe a "woozy face" or "partying face" emoji does the trick. Curious for a peek? The folks over at Emojipedia put together a video to preview on what all the new emoji will look like on the iPhone. As for why it takes so long, well, that's up to individual manufacturers and software makers like Apple, Google and Microsoft to integrate the now finalized versions of code into their respective software so that it appears properly across various devices, platforms and websites. All three aforementioned companies are full, voting members in the consortium. The 157 new emoji are part of an updated version of Unicode, which everything from operating systems to websites use to display letters and characters. Wednesday's announcement gives those software makers some time to start integrating their own variations on the new emoji before the latest version of Unicode, Unicode 11.0, is released in June. According to the Consortium, new emoji typically start showing up on phones in August or September. Seeing as Apple and Google both have traditionally released major versions of iOS and Android in the fall it is likely that is when we'll start to see these new emoji on iPhone and Android devices. CLICK HERE FOR 45-60 DAY CALENDARRestitution for Child Pornography Victims
U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright introduced the Amy, Vicky, and Andy Child Pornography Victim Assistance Act,which would provide an effective restitution process for child pornography victims. Companion legislation passed the Senate on January 23, 2018. "Amy,” “Vicky,” and “Andy” are victims in some of the most widely-distributed child pornography series in the world. The Amy, Vicky, and Andy Actaddresses Paroline v. United States, a 2014 Supreme Court decision that made clear that current federal statute cannot provide meaningful restitution for most child pornography victims. “Victims of these atrocious crimes deserve full protection and compensation,” said Rep. Cartwright. “It’s impossible to understand the psychological harm done by these types of crimes. That’s why we need to work together to strengthen these victims’ voices and help them rebuild their lives. This bill would establish a practical process that provides real and timely restitution.” By shifting the legal burden from victims to perpetrators, the Amy, Vicky, and Andy Act would make the restitution standard more relevant to the unique harm caused by child pornography and more useful to victims who seek to achieve a measure of justice. This bill would also provide victims with the alternative of a one-time fixed compensation payment from the existing Crime Victims Fund. The Amy, Vicky, and Andy Act also requires appointment of a guardian ad litem for victims, and allows them to access the images depicting them, which can be important for victim identification, expert testimony, forensic review, and treatment. This bill is supported by Amy, Vicky, and Andy personally, and is endorsed by the National Center for Victims of Crime, National Crime Victims Bar Association, National Crime Victims Law Institute, National Association of VOCA Assistance Administrators, RAINN, American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, Academy on Violence and Abuse, Utah Crime Victims Legal Clinic, Utah Coalition against Pornography, Utah Coalition against Sexual Assault, CHILD USA, Children’s Justice Fund, Thorn, and DV LEAP. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - February 11Nelson Mandela released from prison 1990 Nelson Mandela, leader of the movement to end South African apartheid, is released from prison after 27 years on February 11, 1990. In 1944, Mandela, a lawyer, joined the African National Congress (ANC), the oldest black political organization in South Africa, where he became a leader of Johannesburg’s youth wing of the ANC. In 1952, he became deputy national president of the ANC, advocating nonviolent resistance to apartheid–South Africa’s institutionalized system of white supremacy and racial segregation. However, after the massacre of peaceful black demonstrators at Sharpeville in 1960, Nelson helped organize a paramilitary branch of the ANC to engage in guerrilla warfare against the white minority government. In 1961, he was arrested for treason, and although acquitted he was arrested again in 1962 for illegally leaving the country. Convicted and sentenced to five years at Robben Island Prison, he was put on trial again in 1964 on charges of sabotage. In June 1964, he was convicted along with several other ANC leaders and sentenced to life in prison. ![]()
