Scientific Proof You're in Love - Part 2 of 5![]() Emotional Instability
As is well known, falling in love often leads to emotional and physiological instability. You bounce between exhilaration, euphoria, increased energy, sleeplessness, loss of appetite, trembling, a racing heart and accelerated breathing, as well as anxiety, panic and feelings of despair when your relationship suffers even the smallest setback. These mood swings parallel the behavior of drug addicts. And indeed, when in-love people are shown pictures of their loved ones, it fires up the same regions of the brain that activate when a drug addict takes a hit. Being in love, researchers say, is a form of addiction. Intensifying Attraction Going through some sort of adversity with another person tends to intensify romantic attraction. Central dopamine may be responsible for this reaction, too, because research shows that when a reward is delayed, dopamine-producing neurons in the mid-brain region become more productive. By Live Science Staff Will a Harsh Winter Kill Deer Ticks![]() Given the recent stretch of abnormally frigid weather, a common question posed to DCNR has been, “How will this affect ticks?”
Pennsylvania led the nation in 2016 with more than 12,000 confirmed cases of Lyme disease, which is transmitted to humans from the bite of the black-legged (or “deer”) tick. The short answer is, “somewhat.” Cold Weather Can Impact Tick Populations. Colder winters can cut down the number of ticks that survive through winter. However, studies show only around 20 percent of the population die off. Carefully controlled lab experiments, using freezers, show that ticks will die between -2 to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, but, there’s a catch. Lab conditions can never emulate the full range of conditions that can and will affect a population of ticks. In a freezer, there is no escape. In nature, conditions can be quite different. Landscape And Physiology Help Them Survive. Evidence shows that natural landscape conditions and physiological adaptations bring ticks a reprieve from winter mortality. Deep soils, leaf litter, and perhaps a blanket of snow all offer insulation from wildly fluctuating air temperatures. As temperatures fall, ticks naturally burrow deeper to escape the cold. Ticks boast physiological adaptations that allow them to overcome cold snaps. They are reputed to be able to take advantage of cellular processes that decrease the proportion of water in their cells, thus decreasing cellular freezing point. Scientists also hypothesize that ticks can manufacture a “cryoprotectant,” essentially natural antifreeze, which circulates in their cells. This is a well-known adaptation in some amphibians that inhabit colder climates. Is It The Bitter Cold That Impacts Tick Populations? Some scientific studies on winter tick mortality have shown that it is not necessarily the cold that kills them, but rather, the magnitude and frequency of temperature changes. Winters highlighted by a relative abundance of changes from warm to very cold seem to possess the greatest potential to substantially decrease tick populations. The applied rationale is that warmer temperatures lure ticks to the forest surface or onto vegetation, and the quick onset of cold then kills them before they can reach safe-haven in soil or leaf litter. Although the colder temperatures could possibly reduce tick populations, the theme remains the same when considering risk. Take Precautions To Prevent Tick Bites, No Matter The Time Of Year.

SNAP Healthy Incentives Act Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright recently introduced the bipartisan SNAP Healthy Incentives Act, a bill that would create incentives for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients to purchase fruits and vegetables. From 2011 to 2013, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Food and Nutrition Service implemented a pilot program in Hampden County, Massachusetts that evaluated financial incentives for SNAP recipients to purchase healthy food. The Healthy Incentives Pilot (HIP) refunded SNAP recipients 30 cents for every dollar they spent on fruits and vegetables. This generated a 25 percent increase in the consumption of fruits and vegetables among the test group. The SNAP Healthy Incentives Act would expand HIP to all SNAP recipients. “Unfortunately, the increase in healthy food prices have put fruits and vegetables out of reach for many SNAP recipients. This bipartisan bill revamps SNAP by targeting the benefits towards healthy foods,” said Rep. Cartwright. “Increased fruit and vegetable intake can help reduce rates of heart disease and prevent several cancers. Not only does this alleviate health care costs, but it can save lives.” February 1 Regular EventsBlue Mountain Library - Open 10-12 & 6-8pm

CLICK HERE FOR 45-60 DAY CALENDARRoute 512/Moorestown Drive Bridge Opens
The Route 512/Moorestown Drive Bridge over Bushkill Creek in Bushkill Township is open to traffic after being closed for replacement. You may notice a slight bump as you drive across the bridge until a polyester polymer concrete (PPC) overlay is applied to the deck. This is often the final step in completing box beam bridge projects. The PPC overlay is designed to protect the deck from the wear and tear brought about by winter and reduce the long-term maintenance costs. The polyester material can only be applied when temperatures are consistently above 40 degrees, dry weather is forecasted and after the bridge concrete has cured for at least 30 days. An alternating traffic pattern will be controlled by flaggers when the PPC overlay is applied in the spring. "Ripping off the Offers" Groundhog Day Reunion On Friday, February 2nd, 2018 at 10 a.m. Landowners, Municipal Officials and Concerned Citizens will meet at Guy Wagner's Farm located at 207 Field Drive, Bethlehem, PA 18020. Landowners and community members from Northampton, Bucks and Lehigh Counties are gathering in solidarity at Guy Wagner’s Farm, one of the many properties threated by eminent domain, to rip up the final easement acquisition offers of compensation sent to property owners by PennEast Pipeline Company, LLC. Directly impacted residents and concerned citizens will be testifying to the unjust takings of private property, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s inadequate environmental review and the inherent dangers this project presents to their communities. Community members and press are encouraged to attend. The PennEast Pipeline has been granted a Conditional Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. You can find the details of the FERC Certificate at https://elibrary.ferc.gov/idmws/file_list.asp?accession_num=20180119-3110. As a result, landowners who have refused to sign easement agreements with PennEast up until this point have now received their final offers of financial compensation from PennEast Pipeline LLC. PennEast must have an Order for Possession from the Federal Court before stepping foot on any land on which an easement agreement has not already been signed. The Conditional Certificate was granted although the Delaware River Basin Commission, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the Army Corps of Engineers must still review the project. A final order from FERC cannot be issued prior to the completion of these permit processes. In the Conditional Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity, FERC Commissioner Glick dissented, making note of the questionable “public benefit” of the PennEast Pipeline project, stating, “…there will not necessarily be any restriction on a pipeline developer’s ability to exercise eminent domain while the Commission waits to confirm that the pipeline is in the public interest.” In fact, in the FERC order, Commissioner Glick makes a note of the fact that PennEast’s application lacks the evidence that he believes “…is important to making the public interest determination.” For More Information Contact: Guy Wagner, gww52@hotmail.com, (484) 239-0493; Tara Zrinski, taramichele75@gmail.com, (610) 349-9858; Priscilla deLeon, deleon.priscilla@gmail.com, (610) 216-0566 or Arianne Elinich, Bucks County CCAP, BucksCCAP@gmail.com, (484) 357-7474. Columcille's Imbolc Observance
Come celebrate Brighid at Columcille's Imbolc Observance at Columcille Megalith Park 2155 Fox Gap Road, Bangor PA 18013. You are invited to gather Sunday, February 4th at 2:00 pm at the St. Columba Chapel for Columcille's Public Imbolc Observance to be led by Julie Lange-Groth. One of the Celtic cross-quarter days, Imbolc is in honor of the Goddess Brighid, St. Brighid and the coming of Spring. Afterward, all are invited back to the Voyagers Lounge for Tea & Treats. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - February 1Oxford Dictionary debuts 1884 On this day in 1884, the first portion, or fascicle, of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), considered the most comprehensive and accurate dictionary of the English language, is published. Today, the OED is the definitive authority on the meaning, pronunciation and history of over half a million words, past and present. Plans for the dictionary began in 1857 when members of London’s Philological Society, who believed there were no up-to-date, error-free English dictionaries available, decided to produce one that would cover all vocabulary from the Anglo-Saxon period (1150 A.D.) to the present. Conceived of as a four-volume, 6,400-page work, it was estimated the project would take 10 years to finish. In fact, it took over 40 years until the 125th and final fascicle was published in April 1928 and the full dictionary was complete–at over 400,000 words and phrases in 10 volumes–and published under the title A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles. Unlike most English dictionaries, which only list present-day common meanings, the OED provides a detailed chronological history for every word and phrase, citing quotations from a wide range of sources, including classic literature and cookbooks. The OED is famous for its lengthy cross-references and etymologies. The verb “set” merits the OED’s longest entry, at approximately 60,000 words and detailing over 430 uses.No sooner was the OED finished than editors began updating it. A supplement, containing new entries and revisions, was published in 1933 and the original dictionary was reprinted in 12 volumes and officially renamed the Oxford English Dictionary.Between 1972 and 1986, an updated 4-volume supplement was published, with new terms from the continually evolving English language plus more words and phrases from North America, Australia, the Caribbean, New Zealand, South Africa and South Asia.In 1984, Oxford University Press embarked on a five-year, multi-million-dollar project to create an electronic version of the dictionary. The effort required 120 people just to type the pages from the print edition and 50 proofreaders to check their work. In 1992, a CD-ROM version of the dictionary was released, making it much easier to search and retrieve information.Today, the dictionary’s second edition is available online to subscribers and is updated quarterly with over 1,000 new entries and revisions. At a whopping 20 volumes weighing over 137 pounds, it would reportedly take one person 120 years to type all 59 million words in the OED. ![]()
