Slaters' Win Completes Improbable Run
by Larry Cory The Bangor Boys Basketball team completed a seemingly improbable run to earn the sixth and final seed in the Colonial League playoffs to play 7pm Saturday night at number-three seed Palmerton. That run began a month ago with Pen Argyl and ended Wednesday night at Pen Argyl where they defeated the Knights 75-36. On January 11, Bangor’s record stood at 4-8 overall and 3-7 in the league. Cj Miles was just returning from an injury when the Slaters defeated Pen Argyl 63-32 at Bangor. A win over NDGP followed on Miles’ driving lay-up with seven seconds left in the game. The Slaters then shocked undefeated Southern Lehigh and beat highly-ranked Wilson in overtime. A win over Saucon Valley and a non-league loss to Freedom followed. Back to the league schedule, Moravian was next, which had beaten the Slaters 50-31 earlier in the season. The Slaters, however, avenged that loss scoring a decisive 64-48 win. Bangor then suffered a 54-51 league loss to Palmerton in the final seconds. Next up, Bangor reversed a 67-57 loss to Palisades earlier in the year by beating the Pirates 78-37 at Bangor, setting up a big game with Pen Argyl which could put the Slaters in position for the league playoffs. The East division Slaters also needed some help which came from the West Division’s shorter schedule. Going into action Tuesday night, West Division Salisbury led Bangor in the league standings with a 9-7 record compared to Bangor’s 9-8. The Falcons, however, lost to Southern Lehigh 60-56 Tuesday, dropping the Falcons into a tie with Bangor at 9-8. If the season ended then Salisbury would get the nod for the sixth seed based on head-to-head competition. Since east teams play 18 games, the Slaters, still had a game scheduled with Pen Argyl last night, setting up a win or go home scenario. Bangor left little doubt they were not going to be denied racing out to a 19-0 lead before the Knights’ Jillian Pysher scored with 30 seconds left in the first quarter. Nate Owens scored a pair of treys in that run and also took an alley-oop pass from Miles for a lay-up. At halftime Bangor was up 36-13 and after three quarter the lead had increased to 53-23. Owens led the team with 15 points while Miles had 12. Dan Heald and Caleb Ranthum came of the bench to score 8 and 7 points respectively. Pen Argyl Senior Jordan DeFelice hit five, threes and 20 points to lead Pen Argyl. Conor Fehr followed with 8 points. Many thanks to Wayne Muller of Pen Argyl and Dan Borst of Bangor for sending us game stats. GAME VIDEO BELOW Happening Soon......All you can eat breakfast
