Kuster Earns HOBY Award
Pen Argyl’s GFWC Hugh O’Brien Leadership Award for 2017 is Cade Kuster. He is the son of Rachel and Kraig Kuster. Cade is very active in his high school where he has been his class secretary for the past two years. He is a member of the golf and baseball teams, as well as the Mock Trial and Scholastic Scrimmage teams. Cade also is a Peer Mediator, a member of the Chess Club and the Reading Olympics. He is very involved with Pen Argyl's chapter of the Leo Club.
Cade is on the board of Color for Kids, a non-profit organization that supplies underpriviledged youth with crayons and other art supplies, where he acts as a youth advisor and technical support team. He volunteers upwards of 150 hours a years, mostly to Color for Kids, but also enjoys volunteering with the Miracle League every summer. Out of the school setting, Cade plays the piano, snowboards, enjoys history, traveling, and reading. Last summer Cade received the award of Excellence from the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists. His goal is to pursue a career in the medical field specifically in either surgical or anesthesia. Cade is looking forward to representing Pen Argyl Area High School at the Hoby conference and feels that the experience of being a Hoby Ambassador will not only help him to grow as a leader and a student, but will help prepare him to make a difference in the world as a global citizen. Hoby was founded by actor Hugh O’Brien in 1958. The award is given annually to deserving sophomores across the nation. Bald Eagle Nest Cam in Hanover, PA - Live Click On Photo To See Nest

Season three began December 28 at the Hanover nest. The cameras and audio equipment installed for the 2016 season continue to provide excellent views and audio of this eagle family. The live stream began December 17, 2016 shortly after the installation of two new cameras and audio equipment. Eggs were laid on February 18 and 21. March 28 one of the eggs hatched; the nestling died two days later, perhaps injured by a branch being moved in the nest. The other egg never hatched and remained n the nest until May 23 when one of the adults removed the remnants from the nest. Hanover is located in south-central PA about five miles from the Mason-Dixon line.

Patty Hearst Kidnapped (1974)
On February 4, 1974, Patty Hearst, the 19-year-old daughter of newspaper publisher Randolph Hearst, is kidnapped from her apartment in Berkeley, California, by two black men and a white woman, all three of whom are armed. Her fiance, Stephen Weed, was beaten and tied up along with a neighbor who tried to help. Witnesses reported seeing a struggling Hearst being carried away blindfolded, and she was put in the trunk of a car. Neighbors who came out into the street were forced to take cover after the kidnappers fired their guns to cover their escape.
Three days later, the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), a small U.S. leftist group, announced in a letter to a Berkeley radio station that it was holding Hearst as a “prisoner of war.” Four days later, the SLA demanded that the Hearst family give $70 in foodstuffs to every needy person from Santa Rosa to Los Angeles. This done, said the SLA, negotiation would begin for the return of Patricia Hearst. Randolph Hearst hesitantly gave away some $2 million worth of food. The SLA then called this inadequate and asked for $6 million more. The Hearst Corporation said it would donate the additional sum if the girl was released unharmed. him. Winter Fest at Blue Mt. BAHS Marching Band Uniform Fund Drive The Bangor Area High School Marching Band uniforms, which are modeled after Her Majesty’s Royal Welsh Guard, pay tribute to the heritage of Bangor, PA. After years of normal wear and tear, the uniforms must be replaced. The new uniforms will continue to use the same style.

History of the Viaduct
The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Sunday, February 12th @ 2:00 PM. Speaker for the afternoon will be local photographer Ernie Dietz. Mr. Dietz will be showing pictures of the Bangor “Viaduct” pre 1939 construction, during its use as a conduit span over the railroad tracks, its recent demolition and current reconstruction. He will also speak about the materials that were and are now being used to erect the historic landmark and will reveal the little known fact about “names” that were inscribed on the top of the old side posts. Jamilah Lemieux, a former senior editor at Ebony magazine and current vice president of news and men’s programming at Interactive One, an online news platform, will speak at Northampton Community College (NCC) on Thursday, February 16, at 11:00 a.m., as part of the College’s observation of Black History Month. The talk is titled The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, but It Might Be Live-Streamed.
Also included on February 16 will be social justice performances by NCC students, starting at 9:30 a.m. and a faculty panel discussion at 1:30 p.m.

The hike will be about half a mile. Wear waterproof boots and dress for the weather. Bring a flashlight or headlamp. Registration is required. You will be asked to specify your age and weight range when registering to determine what size snowshoe you will need. If you plan to bring your own snowshoes note that on your registration so we can offer the equipment to additional families.

BAHS Drama Department Pancake Breakfast
On Saturday, February 18, from 8am to noon, at Bangor Area Middle School, the Bangor High School Drama Department will host the fourth annual pancake breakfast with the cast of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.” Classic characters, such as Belle, the Beast, and Mrs. Potts, will transport visitors to the French countryside as they welcome guests of all ages with music, food, and activities.
In addition to restaurant-quality food and top-notch service, patrons can take advantage of a special opportunity to have their photo taken with the princess, the beast, and the enchanted characters. After snapping a photo and filling their bellies, guests can play games and participate in other activities, all while enjoying musical performances from the cast of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast”.

NCC Lineworker Info Session
Northampton Community College (NCC) will be holding free Information sessions about its Lineworker program at 5 pm on February 13 and February 21, 2017 at Alumni Hall, Room 130 A-D, Gates Center, Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township. These sessions are mandatory for anyone who would like to enroll in the program.
The session will provide students with the opportunity to meet the instructors, hear about the program and its requirements, and gain information about potential resources for financial assistance for qualified candidates.

The 7th Annual “912” Scholarship is for a graduating Bangor HS senior who plans on attending a technical school or college. The scholarship is awarded to a well rounded student with interests in academics, outdoor sporting activities such as hunting, fishing, hiking and an enthusiasm for the outdoors. The student must possess a giving spirit exemplified through community service and love for family and friends. The application process is being facilitated by Slater Family Network. Allentown, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks are happy to announce their 2017 National Arena League (NAL) schedule. Featuring six home and six away games, the Steelhawks season opens at home on Sunday, March 19 th at 4pm against the expansion Dayton Wolfpack.
“After much anticipation are thrilled to be able to release our 2017 league schedule today,” stated Steelhawks General Manager Mike Clark. “The National Arena League is ready to kickoff its inaugural season, and we can’t wait to start our seventh year of play. Week one can’t come soon enough, and we look forward to seeing the Steelhawks faithful out in full force this season inside the PPL Center.” Additional schedule highlights include a Week Three matchup where the team will be making the long trip to Florida to take on the Jacksonville Sharks, former members of the AFL. Week Four brings a familiar opponent to the Valley; the Columbus Lions will be in the Hawks Nest for the Steelhawks second home game on April 9th. The Steelhawks closest rivals this year will be the Dayton (Ohio) Wolfpack and the High Country (North Carolina) Grizzlies, each of whom appear on Lehigh Valley’s schedule multiple times; LV faces Dayton four times – two home, two away, and High Country three times – one home, two away.
