New Orleanians First Mardi Gras - 1827![]() On this day in 1827, a group of masked and costumed students dance through the streets of New Orleans, Louisiana, marking the beginning of the city’s famous Mardi Gras celebrations.
The celebration of Carnival–or the weeks between Twelfth Night on January 6 and Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Christian period of Lent–spread from Rome across Europe and later to the Americas. Nowhere in the United States is Carnival celebrated as grandly as in New Orleans, famous for its over-the-top parades and parties for Mardi Gras (or Fat Tuesday), the last day of the Carnival season. Over time, hundreds of krewes formed, building elaborate and colorful floats for parades held over the two weeks leading up to Fat Tuesday. Riders on the floats are usually local citizens who toss “throws” at passersby, including metal coins, stuffed toys or those now-infamous strands of beads. Though many tourists mistakenly believe Bourbon Street and the historic French Quarter are the heart of Mardi Gras festivities, none of the major parades have been allowed to enter the area since 1979 because of its narrow streets. March 28 one of the eggs hatched; the nestling died two days later, perhaps injured by a branch being moved in the nest. The other egg never hatched and remained n the nest until May 23 when one of the adults removed the remnants from the nest. Special Future Events - See BelowCLICK HERE FOR 45-60 DAY CALENDARCan You Believe It?St. Louis moves 122-year-old home seven-tenths of a mile![]() (UPI) -- The city of St. Louis, Mo., moved a 122-year-old house about seven-tenths of a mile to make room for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's new campus. The home of Charlesetta Taylor, 81, was loaded onto a truck Sunday morning and slowly driven through the city's streets to its new location.
Taylor had been a vocal opponent of the St. Louis Development Corp.'s plan to give the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency a 96-acre sits for its new $1.75 billion campus, leading officials to promise Taylor they would move her home to a new location of her choosing outside the area of the eminent domain project. "This is making good on a promise that we made," Mayor Francis Slay said in a statement provided to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The process of moving the home, which was built in 1895 and purchased by Taylor's family in 1945, began at 7 a.m. Sunday and the house arrived at its destination about 1:30 p.m. John Matyiko, owner of Expert House Movers, which was contracted for the move, said the house weighs nearly 370 tons. "To put it in proportion, we moved the original airport terminal in Newark, New Jersey, and that was 7,000 tons," he told St. Louis Public Radio. "And the tallest building we moved was 21 stories." Food and Entertaining...The smart advice that makes clean eating an attainable lifestyle choice![]() (BPT) - Healthy eating trends come and go. Sometimes the fads are extreme, over-the-top and hard to maintain, but others offer simple, attainable changes that make them well worth incorporating into your lifestyle. Clean eating, actively seeking out foods that are minimally processed with simple, natural ingredients, is a relatively recent food trend that's well on its way to becoming a popular lifestyle choice for many people. Over the past several years, more Americans have begun seeking out foods with simple, familiar ingredient lists. The clean eating trend incorporates some very healthful practices, such as eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean, wholesome proteins.
Although some interpret the idea of "clean eating" as eliminating entire food groups, such as dairy or anything that contains gluten, the true essence of clean eating is to eat a wide variety of nutritious, wholesome foods that are minimally processed. If you're thinking of incorporating clean eating into your lifestyle this year, here are some tips to get you started: * Read labels. Foods that align with the "clean eating" trend will have fewer ingredients, and ingredients will be easily recognizable as food rather than additives or preservatives. For example, JENNIE-O(R) All Natural Turkey Sausage and JENNIE-O(R) Hot All Natural Turkey Sausage contain only turkey, salt, spices, sugar and rosemary extract. Both varieties are flavorful and satisfying with reduced sodium content and only 110 calories and 6 grams of fat per serving. * Shop the perimeter of the grocery store. That's where you'll find the least processed foods, including the produce section, dairy and egg cases. You can even find minimally processed foods, such as frozen fruit and veggies, in the freezer section. * Rely on water to quench your thirst. Plain water is the most natural, healthful beverage you can drink. The best way to approach clean eating is to think in terms of what you will eat, rather than what you might eliminate. Choose lean protein sources like all-natural turkey, nutritious whole grains, fruits and vegetables and you'll find eating clean can be delicious, easy and rewarding. Start your clean eating lifestyle today by trying this breakfast recipe from Jennie-O: Southwestern Turkey-Sweet Potato Breakfast Hash Ingredients: 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 (1-pound) package JENNIE-O(R) All Natural Turkey Sausage 1 small onion, chopped 1 medium sweet potato, peeled and chopped 1 small red bell pepper, chopped 1 small green bell pepper, chopped 1 jalapeno, seeded and sliced 1 teaspoon ground chili powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 1 teaspoon kosher salt, if desired 6 medium eggs, if desired 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro leaves Directions: Heat oven to 400 F. In large cast-iron skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Cook turkey sausage as specified on the package. Cook to well-done - 165 F as measured by a meat thermometer - and crumble. Add onion and sweet potato and cook five minutes. Stir in bell peppers, jalapeno, chili powder, cumin, paprika and salt, if desired. Make six wells and pour eggs into wells, if desired. Remove from heat. Bake 20 minutes or until egg whites are set and yolk is cooked to desired degree of doneness. Sprinkle with cilantro. Makes six servings. Whether you're getting married or just thinking about getting serious, talking about money can help couples understand each other and avoid unhappy surprises down the road. Here are five reasons why talking about money can enhance a relationship.
It makes couples happier. Talking about things like spending, saving and debt may sound business-like and unromantic, but financial experts agree that money is a frequent topic of arguments in many relationships. In fact, according to a survey by the American Psychological Association, almost a third of adults with partners reported that money is a major source of conflict in their relationship. "What I see when talking with couples is that learning how to resolve money disagreements - and there will be disagreements - helps build important relationship skills," says Daniel Prebish, director of Life Event Services with Wells Fargo Advisors. "Those skills will be valuable both at the beginning of a relationship and likely for a couple's entire time together." It helps couples connect by understanding what's going on. Couples should discuss pros and cons of combining finances versus keeping finances separate. According to research by Wells Fargo & Company, about half of couples choose to combine accounts, while the other half prefers separate accounts. Regardless of where you and your significant other fall in this spectrum, both people in a relationship should understand how their financial habits impact - positively or negatively - the life they are building together. It helps couples track their short and long term financial goals. Be open with your significant other about your full financial picture. Questions that can help open the door to meaningful conversations include: 1. Are we paying ourselves first? 2. Do we have a safety net? 3. Are we paying all our bills on time, every time? 4. Have we reviewed our insurance needs in the last year? 5. Do we track our spending to know where our money is going every month? 6. Are we paying down high-interest-rate debt first? 7. Do we know where our credit stands? 8. Are we saving for retirement? It helps couples afford the "extras" that make life fun. Building a solid financial future shouldn't mean forsaking enjoying life. When couples have a common understanding of how they'll prioritize and manage their day-to-day finances like housing costs, grocery and utility bills, it's easier to figure out where splurges fit in. It helps avoid financial surprises. Hearing your friends shout, "happy birthday" is a welcome surprise. What's not welcome is suddenly discovering you can't afford to pay this month's bills or that retirement is farther away than a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Being up front about money issues and sharing complete financial information with your significant other helps avoid financial surprises that can add unnecessary stress to a relationship. While discussing money may not feel romantic, it certainly is emotional. So how do you get started? Here are tips: 1. Admit the conversation can feel awkward, but commit to having it anyway. 2. Pick a mutually agreeable time. Your candle-lit Valentine's dinner may not be the right setting. Pre-arranging the conversation will help ensure both people are mentally prepared. 3. Be open with your significant other. Share your values and opinions about spending and savings habits and goals you would like to achieve together. 4. Work at it. Commit to an annual meeting to talk about money, credit and whether you're on track to achieve your financial goals. By opening the lines of communication, you can get on the same financial page before joining financial forces. 1885 Club Accepting Nominations The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267. Black Balloon Overdose Awareness Day
Please hang a Black Balloon outside of your home or business to show awareness for all the ones we have lost to addiction. This is a sign that you have been affected by drug addiction or an overdose death. It is a sign that we are all in this together! This is the second annual event, last year it was a huge success with over 40,000 participants. The Addicts Mom supports this event. If people know of this event, statistics, unfortunately tell me there would be well over 40,000 balloons in PA. alone. East Bangor UMC Lenten Bible Study The East Bangor United Methodist Community Church is offering a Lenten Bible Study, "The Seedy Side of Jacob". We all know Jacob, the highly-regarded patriarch of the Israelites. From Jacob came the offspring who became "The Twelve Tribes of Israel," who were the foundation of the Jewish movement. Jacob was, and is, highly revered. He was also human - very human. And in his humanness his quest for power and authority often got in the way of his decision-making process. During Lent, we will take a look at the less-than-admirable side of Jacob in the quest to embrace our own humanity and seek alternatives to accomplishing God's will without resorting to cleverness and self-centeredness. The sessions will be held on Mondays at 7:00 p.m. from March 6 - April 3. For more info. call 610-588-4453, or visit www.ebumc.org.
