Slaters fight back before 44-32 loss
by Larry Cory The Bangor Girls basketball team was eliminated from District XI 5A competition Saturday in a 44-32 loss to the Lade Tides of Pottsville. The final score, however, in no way says much about how the game was played. With just seconds left in the third period Bangor and Pottsville were tied at 28-28, but the game was not always that close. At the outset, Pottsville shot lights out gaining a quick 10-0 lead. Then, thanks to an aggressive 1-2-1-1 full court zone press, the tide wreaked havoc on the Slaters forcing several turnovers which eventually led to a 20-7 lead. It would have been easy at this point for this team to throw in the towel, pack their bags, and head down Route 33 to the Slate Belt. However, if you've seen this team play this year, you had to know that they were not going to quit - they never have. From this point in the game, the Slaters outscored Pottsville 21-8 to tie the game at 28-28. Meghan Barone connected on two of her threes from behind the arc, and Morgan Karasek's strong drives to the basket netted points from the foul line as the Slaters charged all the way back. However, the Tide regained their poise and momentum with a 10-2 run in the final period putting the game out of reach. Regardless of the outcome, the Slaters hustle paid dividends throughout the year. Give the girls credit and head Coach Bill Bicci who needed to rebuild a team minus three key players from last year. Moles, also called nevi, are small, flat, brown or tan growths of melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment in the skin, Ploch said. As with freckles and age spots, it's possible to get a mole anywhere on the skin, though the growths often appear in sun-exposed areas, Ploch explained. But unlike age spots, which develop because of an increase in the activity of melanocytes, moles form because of an increase in the melanocytes themselves, as they grow in a cluster or clump.
It's unclear why people develop moles, but genetics as well as hormones may play a role, she said. People tend to get the most moles during their first 30 to 40 years of life, Ploch said, and people tend to get fewer moles in their 60s, 70s and 80s. In addition, some moles can get lighter with age. People who have moles should be seen by a dermatologist, who can evaluate the growths and remove any mole that looks abnormal. Moles are usually tested once removed, because one-third of melanomas arise in a mole, Ploch said. [Melanoma: Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention] Moles that are superficial, meaning they lie on the surface of the skin and do not extend too deep, can be shaved off, Ploch said. She showcased her students' latest artwork in a Facebook photo that has racked up over 182,000 likes and nearly 60,000 comments.

The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Sunday, March 11th at 2:00 PM. Local naval historian, Jim Paynter along with Mr. Marc Blau, will present the early life and military life of the Slate Belt’s “first” casualty in World War II Blaine Reimel. Reimel was a resident of East Bangor when he joined the Navy, upon the outbreak of the war. As a result of his ultimate sacrifice, the local cemetery bears his name, in his honor, yet there was much more to his life. Mr. Paynter, who has an extensive knowledge of the Navy, will also present: The Battle of Savo Island. The event is free and open to the public. Ogham Art Tile Class
Celtic Cultural Alliance is excited to announce an Ogham Art Tile Class, led by Nancy Lewis. This workshop takes place in two sessions: April 18th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and April 25th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.. Come join us for a fun night of exploring the Ogham alphabet, and then create your own design in a clay slab. After it is fired, come back to class one week later and glaze it. The ceramic piece can be picked up at Celtic Cultural Alliance after May 2. The Ogham alphabet was used to represent the Primitive Irish language using a series of perpendicular and intersecting lines, written vertically, and then read from bottom to top. This class is suitable for ages 16 and up. Instructor Nancy Lewis is a talented artist who continually inspires as students as an art teacher at Liberty High School. To register for the class, please go to http://www.celticfest.org/ogham_art_class THIS DAY IN HISTORY - February 25Clay knocks out Liston 1964 On February 25, 1964, 22-year-old Cassius Clay shocks the odds-makers by dethroning world heavyweight boxing champ Sonny Liston in a seventh-round technical knockout. The dreaded Liston, who had twice demolished former champ Floyd Patterson in one round, was an 8-to-1 favorite. However, Clay predicted victory, boasting that he would “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” and knock out Liston in the eighth round. The fleet-footed and loquacious youngster needed less time to make good on his claim–Liston, complaining of an injured shoulder, failed to answer the seventh-round bell. A few moments later, a new heavyweight champion was proclaimed. Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. was born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1942. He started boxing when he was 12 and by age 18 had amassed a record of over 100 wins in amateur competition. In 1959, he won the International Golden Gloves heavyweight title and in 1960 a gold medal in the light heavyweight category at the Summer Olympic Games in Rome. Clay turned professional after the Olympics and went undefeated in his first 19 bouts, earning him the right to challenge Sonny Liston, who had defeated Floyd Patterson in 1962 to win the heavyweight title. On February 25, 1964, a crowd of 8,300 spectators gathered at the Convention Hall arena in Miami Beach to see if Cassius Clay, who was nicknamed the “Louisville Lip,” could put his money where his mouth was. The underdog proved no bragging fraud, and he danced and backpedaled away from Liston’s powerful swings while delivering quick and punishing jabs to Liston’s head. Liston hurt his shoulder in the first round, injuring some muscles as he swung for and missed his elusive target. By the time he decided to discontinue the bout between the sixth and seventh rounds, he and Clay were about equal in points. A few conjectured that Liston faked the injury and threw the fight, but there was no real evidence, such as a significant change in bidding odds just before the bout, to support this claim.

Gearing Up for Kindergarten
The Bangor Area School District will be offering the spring Gearing Up for Kindergarten program beginning this March. The program will be held at the Washington Elementary School on Tuesdays and the Five Points Elementary School on Wednesdays from March 6 to March 27, 2018 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. The Gearing Up for Kindergarten program is intended for families with a child who will be entering kindergarten in August 2018. The classes run for an hour and a half each night. Earth Day Celebration
Annual Earth Day Celebration hosted by Waste Management's Grand Central Environmental Education Center will be held Sunday, April 22 at 11 AM - 2 PM at Waste Management's Grand Central Environmental Education Center 891 Grand Central Road, Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania 18072 The event will include presentations by Bear Mountain Butterflies and the P.T. Reptiles!! (YES REPTILES THIS YEAR!! YAY!) They will also be recognizing some of the great Scouts that have achieved Eagle Status for the projects completed at the Education Center. Ogham Art Tile Class
Celtic Cultural Alliance is excited to announce an Ogham Art Tile Class, led by Nancy Lewis. This workshop takes place in two sessions: April 18th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and April 25th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.. Come join us for a fun night of exploring the Ogham alphabet, and then create your own design in a clay slab. After it is fired, come back to class one week later and glaze it. The ceramic piece can be picked up at Celtic Cultural Alliance after May 2. The Ogham alphabet was used to represent the Primitive Irish language using a series of perpendicular and intersecting lines, written vertically, and then read from bottom to top. This class is suitable for ages 16 and up. Instructor Nancy Lewis is a talented artist who continually inspires as students as an art teacher at Liberty High School. A graduate of Kutztown University, she enjoys ceramics, watercolor and pen and ink. She resides in Bethlehem along with her husband, George, and their children. The cost of the class is $35.00. *Players ages 9 and 10 as of May 1, 2018 may attend the Minors sessions. *Players age 11 and 12 may attend the Majors sessions.

*Minors will be held from 6-7:30pm . *Majors will be held from 7:30-9pm
Please note these sessions are limited to the first 25 players due to limited space.
