The National Football Foundation Lehigh Valley Chapter will hold its annual scholar-athlete dinner on March 4.The festivities begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Northampton Community Center. Former Eagles placekicker David Akers is the keynote speaker.

He is a member of the student government and participates in varsity wrestling and cross country. He serves as a youth cross-fit coach assistant and volunteers for the Summer Youth Breakfast Club. He is also doing an internship with St. Luke’s University Health Network. Sawyer Carl Beltz A 6-3, 175-pound defensive end, Beltz ranks 11th out of 124 students. Alcohol has a slight diuretic effect
Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning that one of its effects is to encourage water to leave the body more quickly. Heavy drinkers can become dehydrated, and people tend to go to the bathroom frequently while drinking.
In modest amounts, this slight diuretic effect is not harmful, Zakhari said. However, if a person is already slightly dehydrated before having a drink, perhaps from heat or from working out, the effect will be more apparent. That failing, he next told him to tickle his nose with a feather adding, “If you sneeze once or twice even the most violent hiccup is sure to go.” Whether the doctor gave the speech is not known – but both cures are still stock remedies. Scared Straight Another remedy was to terrify the person inflicted. Perhaps this one grew out of the fact that many primitive people believed that hiccups were caused by demons entering the person and that the only way to get rid of them was to scare them to death. Veterans Care Financial Protection Act
Washington, DC - Last week, the U.S. Senate passed by unanimous consent the Veterans Care Financial Protection Act, a bipartisan bill introduced by Representatives Matt Cartwright (D-Pa.), Seth Moulton (D-Mass.), Jim Renacci (R-Ohio), Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), and Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) and Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Marco Rubio (D-Fla.). A modified version of the bill previously passed the House of Representatives unanimously and now heads to the President for his signature. The Veterans Care Financial Protection Act seeks to crack down on scam artists who are diverting federal funds from the Veterans Affairs (VA) Aid and Attendance program intended to support low-income and older veterans who require assisted care. The Aid and Attendance (A&A) benefit helps pay for assisted living or in-home personal care for veterans who qualify for a VA pension, and are housebound or require the aid and attendance of another person. Scam artists have targeted veterans, charging them fees for obtaining the benefit even though the application process is free. Some scammers even take control of the veteran’s assets and move them into an irrevocable trust or an annuity, which the elderly veteran often cannot access again for many years, and may disqualify the veteran from other assistance, like Medicaid. “It’s our responsibility to protect our nation’s heroes and ensure they receive their earned benefits. The A&A benefit is crucial for veterans who need help with in-home care or assisted living. Unfortunately, predatory scam artists exploit veterans by turning the well-deserved A&A benefit into a financial nightmare,” said Rep. Matt Cartwright. “I’m thrilled the Senate passed our bipartisan, commonsense proposal to safeguard veterans from these scams. I thank my colleagues in the Senate for their hard work on this bill.” “All three of my brothers served in the military, and they taught me about the sacrifices our veterans have made to keep us safe. We need to make sure when our servicemembers return home, they get the care they need and deserve,”said Sen. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - February 23U.S. flag raised on Iwo Jima 1945 During the bloody Battle for Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines from the 3rd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Regiment of the 5th Division take the crest of Mount Suribachi, the island’s highest peak and most strategic position, and raise the U.S. flag. Marine photographer Louis Lowery was with them and recorded the event. American soldiers fighting for control of Suribachi’s slopes cheered the raising of the flag, and several hours later more Marines headed up to the crest with a larger flag. Joe Rosenthal, a photographer with the Associated Press, met them along the way and recorded the raising of the second flag along with a Marine still photographer and a motion-picture cameraman. Rosenthal took three photographs atop Suribachi. The first, which showed five Marines and one Navy corpsman struggling to hoist the heavy flag pole, became the most reproduced photograph in history and won him a Pulitzer Prize. The accompanying motion-picture footage attests to the fact that the picture was not posed. Of the other two photos, the second was similar to the first but less affecting, and the third was a group picture of 18 soldiers smiling and waving for the camera. Many of these men, including three of the six soldiers seen raising the flag in the famous Rosenthal photo, were killed before the conclusion of the Battle for Iwo Jima in late March. Gearing Up for Kindergarten
The Bangor Area School District will be offering the spring Gearing Up for Kindergarten program beginning this March. The program will be held at the Washington Elementary School on Tuesdays and the Five Points Elementary School on Wednesdays from March 6 to March 27, 2018 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. The Gearing Up for Kindergarten program is intended for families with a child who will be entering kindergarten in August 2018. The classes run for an hour and a half each night. This program offers parent/child activities, as well as separate child preparation and parent education classes. Parent topics include: Learning Styles/School Readiness, Temperament, Early Literacy/Math, Social/Emotional Development, Nurturance and Prevention Tools, Nutrition, Safety, and Parent’s Role in School Success. Harlem Wizards Basketball Game
The Bangor Area Middle School PTSO (Parent, Teacher, Student, Organization) is hosting its 1st Annual Harlem Wizards Basketball Game on April 7, 2018. While the PTSO is fairly new, we are running this fundraiser in hopes that we can raise enough money to assist the school with future purchases that are not in their budget such as: new library books, school supplies and equipment, funding field trips and assemblies, as well as assist with purchases for the school dances throughout the year. We wanted to take a new approach to fundraising and offer a family friendly event that would bring the community together for a great cause and promote wellness at the same time. We will have our own team consisting of teachers and staff from each school in the district as well as some High School players. Our team will be playing against the Harlem Wizards. Ogham Art Tile Class
Celtic Cultural Alliance is excited to announce an Ogham Art Tile Class, led by Nancy Lewis. This workshop takes place in two sessions: April 18th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and April 25th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.. Come join us for a fun night of exploring the Ogham alphabet, and then create your own design in a clay slab. After it is fired, come back to class one week later and glaze it. The ceramic piece can be picked up at Celtic Cultural Alliance after May 2. The Ogham alphabet was used to represent the Primitive Irish language using a series of perpendicular and intersecting lines, written vertically, and then read from bottom to top. This class is suitable for ages 16 and up. Instructor Nancy Lewis is a talented artist who continually inspires as students as an art teacher at Liberty High School. A graduate of Kutztown University, she enjoys ceramics, watercolor and pen and ink. She resides in Bethlehem along with her husband, George, and their children. The cost of the class is $35.00.
