Ex-Slater Jyri Davis jumps long at Point Park Bangor 2014 graduate Jyri Davis has been a significant factor in the success of Point Park University's Track program. According to the Pittsburgh, PA school's website, Davis qualified for the NAIA indoor national championship in 2017 for the second year in a row by hitting the NAIA "A" qualification.
His personal-best jump of 14.29 meters topped the standard of 14.18 meters and bettered last year's mark in the event. Davis' jump gave him first place at the SPIRE meet, which was being held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. Results for Davis in this year's event were unavailable. Davis holds the Bangor High School triple jump record of 45-6. He also scored five touchdowns in one game versus Northern Lehigh in 2013. News Shorts.........

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - February 22
U.S. hockey team makes miracle on ice 1980
In one of the most dramatic upsets in Olympic history, the underdog U.S. hockey team, made up of college players, defeats the four-time defending gold-medal winning Soviet team at the XIII Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York. The Soviet squad, previously regarded as the finest in the world, fell to the youthful American team 4-3 before a frenzied crowd of 10,000 spectators. Two days later, the Americans defeated Finland 4-2 to clinch the hockey gold.
The Soviet team had captured the previous four Olympic hockey golds, going back to 1964, and had not lost an Olympic hockey game since 1968. Three days before the Lake Placid Games began, the Soviets routed the U.S. team 10-3 in an exhibition game at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Americans looked scrappy, but few blamed them for it–their average age, after all, was only 22, and their team captain, Mike Eruzione, was recruited from the obscurity of the Toledo Blades of the International League.
Few had high hopes for the seventh-seeded U.S. team entering the Olympic tournament, but the team soon silenced its detractors, making it through the opening round of play undefeated, with four victories and one tie, thus advancing to the four-team medal round. The Soviets, however, were seeded No. 1 and as expected went undefeated, with five victories in the first round.

Harlem Wizards Basketball Game
The Bangor Area Middle School PTSO (Parent, Teacher, Student, Organization) is hosting its 1st Annual Harlem Wizards Basketball Game on April 7, 2018. While the PTSO is fairly new, we are running this fundraiser in hopes that we can raise enough money to assist the school with future purchases that are not in their budget such as: new library books, school supplies and equipment, funding field trips and assemblies, as well as assist with purchases for the school dances throughout the year. We wanted to take a new approach to fundraising and offer a family friendly event that would bring the community together for a great cause and promote wellness at the same time. We will have our own team consisting of teachers and staff from each school in the district as well as some High School players. Our team will be playing against the Harlem Wizards.
To purchase tickets online you can go to: https://www.harlemwizards.com/schedule-tickets/ Find the April calendar and click on April 7th, Bangor, PA. Any businesses interested in being a sponsor for this event can contact Debbie Smith, 610-751-7692 or Kim Gambale, 484-241-0441 or email: bamsptso@gmail.com
