A winter weather advisory is in effect from 7pm this evening to 7am Christmas Day for mixed precipitation. Plan on slippery Road conditions. Total wet snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze are expected. in portions of northern New Jersey and east central Pennsylvania. Be prepared for difficult travel conditions, with slippery roads and reduced visibilities at times. A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving. SBRPD Officers Earn Life Saving Awards
This past Thursday the Slate Belt Regional Police Department will be recognized two officers for life saving efforts. The incident occurred on July 29th, 2017 in the 400 block of S. Main Street in Pen Argyl Borough. Officers were dispatched to a home for a report of a 53-year old unconscious male. CPR was in progress. Officer Shannon Young and Sgt. Jonathon Hoadley responded and were met on scene by Look Out Fire Company personnel. Officer Young and Fire Chief Dean Parsons attached an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) while Grant Parsons of the Fire Department continued CPR. After the shock, Officer Young continued CPR until relieved by Sgt. Hoadley who continued CPR until the patient was moved to a Suburban EMS Ambulance. The patient (Tom Hower) has recovered and was on hand for the meeting. Both officers will received the Department’s Life Saving Awards for their actions. Bangor Girls Beat Wilson 56-49.....

BAHS Musician in District 10 Orchestra
Bangor Area High School student Abigail Lucas (Piccolo) was accepted into the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 10 Orchestra. She will travel to Fleetwood High School in Fleetwood, PA to participate in the festival February 7 through 9. A concert open to the public will be Friday February 9, 2018 at 7 pm. While there, she will work under the direction of guest conductor, Kenneth Jernigan, B.M. Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, N.Y., M.Mus. Ed. Lehman College, N.Y.
Mr. Jernigan teaches in the Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. UFSD where he serves as the conductor of the local and national award-winning High School Orchestra, Band and Jazz Ensemble, the Eighth and Seventh Grade Orchestra and Band. He is also director of the district chamber music program. From 1986 to 1999 he was the music director and conductor of the Camerata Chamber Orchestra of Long Island and twice toured Europe with this ensemble. He has guest conducted numerous county, district, regional and all-state festivals on all levels throughout the Northeast and Florida. As a professional double bassist, Mr. Jernigan is in demand as a freelance musician and has held the principal chairs of the Westchester Symphony, Queens Orchestral Society and is currently principal of the Allegro Chamber Orchestra of New York which has made several European tours. Mr. Jernigan has held master classes and clinics on a variety of string and wind performance techniques including a workshop on orchestral bowing techniques in 2005 at the New York All-State Conference in Rochester, N.Y. During the summer, Mr. Jernigan can be found at the Performing Arts Institute (PAI) at Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School in Kingston, Pennsylvania where he and his wife are co-directors of the Junior Division Program. Since the summer of 2011, Mr. Jernigan has been a guest conductor of the Symphony and Chamber Orchestras as well as coaching chamber music at the Eastern U.S. Music Camp at Colgate University, N.Y. The Bangor Womens Club GFWC held their Nov and Dec meetings at Prince of Peace Church, Johnsonsville. June Jones, First Vice President conducted the Nov meeting. Marilyn Mehas presented a Thanksgiving inspirational reading. Halley Dalbert Registered Dietition with Meals on Wheels presented the program. She works with the MOW Chef to insure their meals meet the government guidelines. She described recommended daily food requirements and warned to avoid "portion distortion". She reminded everyone to be mindful of eating habits, slow down and enjoy food. Drink lots of water and engage in physical activity of 30 minutes 5 times a week.
The club worked with the Slater Family Network to provide Thanksgiving baskets for 2 families in our area. Funds were also collected to provide Christmas baskets for families thru the Slater Family Network. Funds were also collected to donate to the Salvation Army Christmas Drive.
Ellen Prudent, President conducted the Dec meeting. The Bangor High School Chamber Choir under the direction of Butch DeMinico presented a medley of Christmas songs. Yvonne Humphreys read an inspirational reading The Christmas Card List.
Next meeting will be held Jan 16, 2018 at noon at Prince of Peace Church, Johnsonsville PA. The program will be the GFWC Arts Festival. Local student art projects will be on display as well as club member art and craft projects. Anyone interested in attending please contact June at 610-588-5198 for details.

Time to Renew Dog Licenses
Pet owners are reminded to renew their dog’s license for 2018. All dogs three months of age or older must be licensed in Pennsylvania, either on an annual basis or with a lifetime license.
Annual license fees vary from $6.50 to $8.50, with fee reductions for senior citizens and those owners with disabilities. Lifetime license costs are $31.50 or $51.50. Completed applications must be returned to the owner’s county treasurer’s office. Applications for license renewals can be found by clicking here.
Under Pennsylvania state law, owners who fail to license and/or immunize their dogs could face fines up to $300 per violation for each dog three months of age or older. In addition, owners of non-vaccinated pets may be fined up to $300 plus court costs.

On December 24, 1979, the Soviet Union invades Afghanistan, under the pretext of upholding the Soviet-Afghan Friendship Treaty of 1978.
As midnight approached, the Soviets organized a massive military airlift into Kabul, involving an estimated 280 transport aircraft and three divisions of almost 8,500 men each. Within a few days, the Soviets had secured Kabul, deploying a special assault unit against Tajberg Palace. Elements of the Afghan army loyal to Hafizullah Amin put up a fierce, but brief resistance.
On December 27, Babrak Karmal, exiled leader of the Parcham faction of the Marxist People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA), was installed as Afghanistan’s new head of government. And Soviet ground forces entered Afghanistan from the north.

Bangor Woman Organizes Promo Night
Lisa Rigione of Bangor is a donor Mom. Her son Mike DeBiase was an organ donor and saved six lives when he passed away from a brain bleed in February, 2015. He was 23. Twenty Two people die everyday waiting for a transplant.
Lisa helped organize a Gift of Life Organ Donor Awareness Night to bring awareness to the importance of organ donation. She also volunteers and speaks for the Gift of Life. She was lucky enough to partner with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Hockey team for a night of awareness which will be held 7:05pm Saturday, February 17 at the PPL center in Allentown.

Project Zero: November 20-January 2, 2018: The goal of this program is to maintain your weight throughout the holiday season from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. Eat in moderation and exercise to break even!
10,000 Steps: April 2, 2018- May 2, 2018: This is not a team walk rather it is an individual walking program where you find the average of your daily steps and set a personal goal to increase the steps each day. Strive to achieve 10,000 steps a day! To find the average; record your steps for any 3 days and divide the total by 3 and that will give you an average of steps walked per day)
Here you can find a way to compete among family members, friend groups, or with neighbors. Be creative in the rewards or prizes!

Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. Meet at the flag pole in front of the visitor center at 400 Belfast Road. Bring comfortable hiking shoes, a water bottle, and wear layers. Registration is required.

The arrival of the New Year is often accompanied by New resolve, New direction, New plans and sometimes a New lease on life. A Clean Slate, the Slate Belt’s Addiction Recovery Center, looks to the New Year as a time to offer New Opportunity! Two programs will begin in January that interface the arts with life skills, introspection and personal development.
Beginning January 10th, A Clean Slate will once again partner with Bloom Creative Studios to offer a six week Life Coaching and Art Journaling series. The series has been extremely well received and spaces will fill up. The sessions are designed to help individuals move beyond the challenges that keep them stuck, and chart a course toward reaching their dreams. Classes will be held from 10am – 12:30pm and from 6 – 8:30pm

The series will run 4 weeks and will begin on Thursday 01/18/2018 from 7pm. – 9pm. The workshops will explore the themes, motifs and symbols of the play “A Wrinkle In Time” by Madeleine L’Engle. No acting experience necessary, just a willingness to jump in and have fun. Sign-ups will be taken up until January 8th.

You will be asked to specify your weight range when registering; this is to determine what size snowshoe you will need.

Irish Tin Whistle Workshop
BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish Tin Whistle workshop on January 27, 2018, as part of its continuing mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture through arts, music, literature, dance, and history programs.
Our Irish whistle workshop with instructor Chris Finnegan, will teach the basics of how to play traditional tunes on a D tin whistle to students over age 14. Students will learn the basic fingering and how to get a good sound from the instrument. Simple music will also be introduced. Students should bring their own whistle, and Walton's is the recommended brand. It can be purchased from Donegal Square, 532 Main St., Bethlehem.
Chris Finnegan is an Uilleann Piper and Whistle player from Old Bridge, New Jersey. He has performed extensively in the United States and Ireland and holds the distinction of being the Piper to the Regimental Headquarters Staff of the “Fighting 69th” (1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, New York Army National Guard). In addition to the Uilleann Pipes, Chris also plays the Double Bass, Guitar, and Great Highland Bagpipes. Chris performs regularly as a solo musician, in duos and with the Irish Music groups Blackwater and Ballycastle.
The class will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Life in Christ, 51 E. Hillmond St., Bethlehem. The cost is $30, and information and registration can be found at http://www.celticfest.org/irish_tin_whistle_workshop.
