Gym & Pool Coming to Slate Belt Y Allentown, PA, December 19, 2017 – After many years of discussion, the Slate Belt YMCA in Pen Argyl is proud to announce the latest steps in its expansion plans with the receipt of funding for construction of a natatorium and gymnasium at its 315 Pennsylvania Ave. facility. “This is an exciting moment for our community,” said Greater Valley YMCA President/CEO David Fagerstrom. “We’re looking forward to the fitness opportunities this will provide for our members, as well as the relationships we look to build with the Bangor and Pen Argyl Area school districts, whose swim teams may train and compete in the pool.” The funding, which amounts to $250,000 annually for 20 years, became available through passage by the state Legislature of House Bill 271, which expands gambling in Pennsylvania. The legislation, also known as Act 42 of 2017, supports fee payments casinos make to local communities through the Pennsylvania Race Horse Development and Gaming Act’s Local Share Account. “The funding is generated solely by the Mount Airy Casino in Mount Pocono, so no taxpayer dollars are directly used in supporting these grants,” said state Rep. Marcia Hahn (R-Bushkill Township), in whose district the YMCA sits. “I sat in on discussions about the swimming pool and gymnasium 15 years ago as a member of then-state Rep. Craig Dally’s staff. I also remember him telling me how his father John Dally talked about this plan in the late 1970s when he was mayor of Pen Argyl, Hahn added. “It took a while and a great deal of persistence, but I’m glad to see this project come to fruition as the premier community resource in the entire Slate Belt.” ![]() Bangor's Ben Holland drives the lane during the Slaters' 77-40 win over Palisades in the home-opener Saturday afternoon. Last Minute Gift Ideas![]() Christmas is almost here once again, and those highly organized and responsible folks are sure to be well-prepared for it. For most people, however, the holiday seems to sneak up like some jungle predator, leaping on them at the very last minute, often leaving them frantic and panicked, trying to pick up last minute gifts. Luckily with the help of a little imagination, it’s easy to come up with worthwhile, last-minute gifts that will be appreciated and won’t break the bank either.
Here are a few ideas to get the snowball rolling:
Chocolate. A gift that just about everyone will love, and appropriate for both men and women, and young and old. And a year’s supply is quite affordable. If the gift recipient can’t or won’t eat chocolate, then there are many other scrumptious delicacies to choose from. Tech gadgets. There are so many neat accessories for smartphones and computers these days, and many are simply amazing. But, these are things that most people just don’t think to buy for themselves. A practical and gee-whiz gift idea they’ll love. Money. If all else fails, this traditional fallback is sure to be appreciated. Gift cards. While this may seem like an unimaginative gift, it's becoming more and more popular because it offers choice. No one will look at a gift card with contempt; they can be purchased for almost anything, and even sent through email. Ultimately, it’s all but guaranteed that a gift card will be used and that's what matters. VA Announces New Veterans ID Card ![]() Recently, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced the application process for the national Veterans Identification Card (VIC) is available for veterans with honorable service. This includes veterans who served in the armed forces and the reserve components, and who have a discharge of honorable or general (under honorable conditions).
This card may be accepted by retailers in lieu of the standard DD-214 form to obtain promotional discounts and other services where offered to veterans. It is considered to be a safer, more convenient and effective way for most veterans to show proof of service. To request a VIC, veterans must visit vets.gov, click on “Apply for Printed Veteran ID Card” on the bottom left of the page and sign in or create an account. Veterans who apply for a card should receive it within 60 days and can check delivery status of their cards at www.vets.gov. A digital version of the VIC will be available online by mid-December. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - December 19President Clinton impeached 1998 After nearly 14 hours of debate, the House of Representatives approves two articles of impeachment against President Bill Clinton, charging him with lying under oath to a federal grand jury and obstructing justice. Clinton, the second president in American history to be impeached, vowed to finish his term. In November 1995, Clinton began an affair with Monica Lewinsky, a 21-year-old unpaid intern. Over the course of a year and a half, the president and Lewinsky had nearly a dozen sexual encounters in the White House. In April 1996, Lewinsky was transferred to the Pentagon. That summer, she first confided in Pentagon co-worker Linda Tripp about her sexual relationship with the president. In 1997, with the relationship over, Tripp began secretly to record conversations with Lewinsky, in which Lewinsky gave Tripp details about the affair. In December, lawyers for Paula Jones, who was suing the president on sexual harassment charges, subpoenaed Lewinsky. In January 1998, allegedly under the recommendation of the president, Lewinsky filed an affidavit in which she denied ever having had a sexual relationship with him. Five days later, Tripp contacted the office of Kenneth Starr, the Whitewater independent counsel, to talk about Lewinsky and the tapes she made of their conversations. Tripp, wired by FBI agents working with Starr, met with Lewinsky again, and on January 16, Lewinsky was taken by FBI agents and U.S. attorneys to a hotel room where she was questioned and offered immunity if she cooperated with the prosecution. A few days later, the story broke, and Clinton publicly denied the allegations, saying, “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky.” Gift of Life Organ Donor Awareness

Life Coaching & Art Journaling Series
The arrival of the New Year is often accompanied by New resolve, New direction, New plans and sometimes a New lease on life. A Clean Slate, the Slate Belt’s Addiction Recovery Center, looks to the New Year as a time to offer New Opportunity! Two programs will begin in January that interface the arts with life skills, introspection and personal development.
Beginning January 10th, A Clean Slate will once again partner with Bloom Creative Studios to offer a six week Life Coaching and Art Journaling series. The series has been extremely well received and spaces will fill up. The sessions are designed to help individuals move beyond the challenges that keep them stuck, and chart a course toward reaching their dreams. Classes will be held from 10am – 12:30pm and from 6 – 8:30pm
