Christmas Tree Fundraiser
The Blue Mountain Community Library is once again sponsoring a Christmas Tree Fundraiser this year. Anyone wishing to honor or memorialize a loved one or a pet may purchase an ornament to hang on our Christmas Tree for $5.00 each.
The Library also has many items for sale in the Book Nook. There are gently used adult and children’s books, DVD’s, CD’s and puzzles. Book Nook Gift Certificates are available to purchase for your favorite readers. The Fundraiser, which began on November 1, will continue through December. Membership to the library is free to all residents of the Pen Argyl School District and non-residents may join for a small yearly fee. Please consider helping the Library help you by purchasing books or gift certificates and/or decorating our tree. This is a fundraiser hosted by First United Methodist Church that benefits the Slater Family Network - 100% of ticket sales will go directly to Slater Family Network. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - December 6Washington Monument completed 1884 On this day in 1884, in Washington, D.C., workers place a nine-inch aluminum pyramid atop a tower of white marble, completing the construction of an impressive monument to the city’s namesake and the nation’s first president, George Washington. As early as 1783, the infant U.S. Congress decided that a statue of George Washington, the great Revolutionary War general, should be placed near the site of the new Congressional building, wherever it might be. After then-President Washington asked him to lay out a new federal capital on the Potomac River in 1791, architect Pierre L’Enfant left a place for the statue at the western end of the sweeping National Mall (near the monument’s present location). It wasn’t until 1832, however–33 years after Washington’s death–that anyone really did anything about the monument. That year, a private Washington National Monument Society was formed. After holding a design competition and choosing an elaborate Greek temple-like design by architect Robert Mills, the society began a fundraising drive to raise money for the statue’s construction. These efforts–including appeals to the nation’s schoolchildren–raised some $230,000, far short of the $1 million needed. Construction began anyway, on July 4, 1848, as representatives of the society laid the cornerstone of the monument: a 24,500-pound block of pure white marble. Six years later, with funds running low, construction was halted. Around the time the Civil War began in 1861, author Mark Twain described the unfinished monument as looking like a “hollow, oversized chimney.” No further progress was made until 1876–the centennial of American independence–when President Ulysses S. Grant authorized construction to be completed.

Winter Wildlife Watch On Saturday, December 8 at 10:00 AM-3:00 PM, spend some of your Saturday watching wildlife at Jacobsburg! Our educators will have activities available at the visitor center including a morning bird walk, bird feeder making, indoor wildlife viewing area, and an afternoon hike to find traces of animals along the trails. Elks National Hoop Shoot Bangor Lodge #1106 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is pleased to announce the Elks National Hoop Shoot to be held beginning at 12:00 PM noon on Saturday December 8, 2018 at the Washington Elementary School, 381 Washington Blvd, Bangor, PA. This Free Throw Contest is open to boys and girls ages 8 through 13 and is free to all contestants. Registration will be open beginning at 11:30 AM on December 8, 2018 at the school gymnasium. Beginning at the local level, winning contestants will advance through District, State, Regional, and National competitions. The Elks helps sponsor contestants and their families at every level of competition. One boy and one girl from each division will win a national title at the National Finals and have their names inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Two National Champions will receive the Getty Powell Award for most baskets made during the National Finals. The Elks National Hoop Shoot Program, sponsored by the Elks National Foundation, provides a character-building, competitive experience for all contestants. Contestants learn about the importance of respect and good sportsmanship. The Bangor Lodge is a proud sponsor of this annual local event. Winners of this local event will represent our Lodge at the District Free throw competition, also being held at Washington Elementary in February. Santa Claus, with the help of the Lookout Fire Co. , will be visiting the children of Pen Argyl on a fire truck, bringing gifts to your home! Social Hall on North Robinson Ave. All gifts must be wrapped when signing up, and we will only be accepting one gift per child. This is only for residents of Pen Argyl Borough. Family Night: Mysterious Mammals will be held Friday, December 14 at 6:30-7:30 PM at acobsburg. Get hands-on with some furs and skulls while learning about the mammals of Pennsylvania. Winter Band Concert The Bangor Area High School Bands Winter Concert will be held on Friday, December 14 at 7:30pm in the M. Craig Paine Performing Arts Theater at Bangor Area High School. The Concert and Symphonic Bands will each present their own portion of the concert. Special Workshop Meeting
A "Special Workshop Meeting" will take place at the Upper Mount Bethel Township (UMBT) Building at 7:30pm on December 20, 2018 and will feature Ron Stern of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. Mr. Stern has been overseeing the Upper Mount Bethel Study and will be at the Special Workshop Meeting to discuss what it takes to get a police force in place whether local, regional or by contracted police services provided by another municipality. The topic for discussion will be crime statistics in UMBT for October and November and the Call Responses by the Pennsylvania State Police. For October in Upper Mount Bethel the PSP Belfast station handled a total of 173 calls for service. The attached spreadsheet contains the significant incidents which required an investigation. · The majority of the calls for October were what the State Police consider to be minor in nature and required no formal report other than notes in their Computed Aided Dispatch (CAD) sheets such as false alarms, welfare checks, security checks at schools, traffic stops, etc. December 22
