Bangor Library hosts Paul Walsh

U.S. Constitution's Meaning
On Saturday, January 18 at Bangor Library from noon to 1:00 pm, Upper Mount Bethel Township Supervisor, John H. Bermingham will present a program for youth in grades 5 to 8. The program is called "What the United States Constitution Means Today".

Santa Claus Coming to Bangor Tonight

Santa is coming to the #Slate Belt! Mark your calendars for Thursday, Dec. 5th and join the Historic Bangor Business Association because a whole lot of holiday fun is coming to #BangorPA!
Children of all ages are welcome for snacks and fun things to do including raffles for Mom and Dad. Proceeds will benefit the Slate Belt Animal Advocacy Group.
Santa will be there from 5:30pm to 8pm to hear your Christmas list and holiday wishes. Mom and Dad, bring your cameras to take some photos.
Wear your most festive holiday attire and enter the Holiday Sweater contest. The Slate Belt Animal Advocacy Group will be there with some adoptable animals. Bring along a donation and receive free raffle tickets.
Donations include dog & cat food and gift cards. - Pick up your Holiday Scavenger Hunt passport at participating downtown businesses beginning Monday, November 25th.

Go Green This Holiday Season

The holiday season brings an increase in energy use and household waste. Each year, from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, household waste in the U.S. increases by more than 25 percent.
It can be easier than you think to help cut down on that impact and go green this holiday season:

Go homemade -- Decorations, table center pieces, and gifts can all be made from reused or recycled materials. Use evergreen trimmings to make wreaths and collect pinecones and other materials to use in a fun craft. Popcorn, citrus, and other dried fruits can create colorful garlands that birds love as well.
Switch to LED -- LED Christmas lights use 90% less electricity than regular incandescent Christmas lights. They are safer, sturdier, and more long-lasting. Since they use less energy, more lights can be stung up without overloading an electrical outlet.
Ditch the disposables -- While washing dishes may be the last thing anyone wants to do after a big holiday meal, disposable plates and cutlery are a huge source of waste during the holidays. Use newspaper or fabric scraps to wrap gifts; and be sure to save the wrapping paper, bags, and boxes you get to re-use next year.
Pick the right tree -- There are many options when picking a natural tree. Support a local tree farm which can help stabilize soil, protect water supplies, and provide refuge for wildlife. Buy a live root ball tree native to your area to enjoy indoors for the holidays and plant it in your yard in the spring.

The Slate Belt Chamber of Commerce, local dignitaries, and proprietor, Janell Connolly, celebrated a Slate Belt Chamber ribbon cutting ceremony on small business Saturday, heralding the Grand Opening of her new store Threadstone Trading Company on November 30.
The retail gift store featuring a nostalgic storefront is located at 207 South Robinson Avenue, Pen Argyl. Inside shoppers can browse through a unique and eclectic array of women and men’s clothing, apothecary and toiletry items, handcrafted jewelry and household items, children’s toys, various displays of art highlighting the talents of local artists, slate gifts, and much, much more.
Threadstone Trading Company is an excellent example of a new type of business model—‘click and mortar’, where a robust online store with strong sales is combined with a storefront in smaller or emerging commerce areas like the Slate Belt. Ms. Connolly is a lifetime resident of Pen Argyl and is excited to provide local residents and surrounding community citizens with the opportunity to #shopsmall, promote and feature local artisans’ work, and offer a place to gather with family and friends to create their own works of art with paint-and-sip classes.

PUMP Seeks 'Generous Contributions'

The PUMP food pantry is open to qualifying clients every Monday morning from 10:00 am to 11:30 am and again Monday evening 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Prior to receiving food assistance, clients must register and provide proof of residency. Families are permitted to receive food every two weeks.
Their monthly overhead is $4,000 which is needed to cover rent, electricity etc. To maintain this vital service to the community they are seeking "generous contributions" for additional, much-needed storage space and maintenance.

Rescue Fire and Santa Gifts
Bangor's Rescue Fire Co. #1 will be delivering gifts again with Santa this year. Please bring a wrapped gift for the person you wish to the fire house any Monday night between 7 and 9 pm. Santa will start deliver presents at 10 am on the 14th and continue till the last gift is delivered. Please attach to the gift the persons name, address and a phone number in case we need to contact someone.
The cost is a $10 donation per two gifts and $5 for each additional gift.

Home Heating Assistance
LIHEAP is a federally funded program that helps individuals and families pay their heating bills through home heating energy assistance grants. It also provides crisis grants to help in the event of an emergency or if a resident is in danger of losing his or her heat due to broken equipment, lack of fuel or termination of utility service.
The income eligibility guidelines for LIHEAP are set at 150% of the federal poverty income level. For example, the income limit for an individual is $18,735; for a couple, the limit is $25,365; and for a family of four, it is $38,625.
Residents may apply for LIHEAP online or by contacting the County Assistance Office in their county of residence.

Support Group For Vets & First Responders
A new confidential support group for veterans and first responders is available at A Clean Slate on the corner of Broadway and First St. (Rt. 191) in Bangor.
The group meets the third Monday of the month from 7pm to 8pm. It is free.

Weona Calendars Available
After many months of hard work, the 100th Anniversary of Weona Park 2020 Calendar is completed. Put together by Walter Cole, former History teacher at Pen Argyl High School and member of the Slate Belt Heritage Center, it features pictures, past and present, of the park and events that took place there, as well as in early Pen Argyl.
This Limited-Edition Calendar is now available to purchase at a cost of $15.00, cash or check only. Checks should be made payable to “Pen Argyl Borough”. The Calendar is on display at the Blue Mt. Snowshoes and Hiking Poles Available
Snowshoes and Hiking Poles are available at Jacobsburg Visitor Center, 400 Belfast Road, Nazareth every Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm. Borrow snowshoe equipment to use on Jacobsburg’s trails this winter! Snowshoes are available for folks of any age or shoe size, including small children. Snowshoes will not be made available during times of insufficient snow cover, usually at least six inches of snow is required. To borrow equipment, you must provide a driver’s license or other form of state issued identification.

Art Workshop for Teens
(Every Tues & Thurs Nov. 5 - Dec 12)

A five week art workshop for teens will be held at Jacobsburg Environmental Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30pm to 8:30pm, November 5 to December 12. Learn from a professional artist who will teach unique painting and drawing processes! The students in the workshop will create a group installation piece inspired by nature and ecological issues for display at Jacobsburg's visitor center. Participants will also take part in environmental science lessons designed to inform and inspire the artwork. Artist in residence Melissa Perhamus will be leading the workshop along with center educators. Examples of her work can be viewed at her website listed below. This workshop is for teens ages 13-18 and attendance is required at all 10 sessions. The workshop is free. Registration is required.
The workshop will start November 5 and continue each Tuesday and Thursday evening until December 12, excluding the week of Thanksgiving.

Help Track Bald Eagle Population

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking for the public’s help to track the state’s growing bald eagle population. After reaching a low of just three nesting bald eagle pairs in the Commonwealth in the early 1980s, officials now estimate there are more than 300 nesting pairs here.
While bald eagles are no longer listed as a threatened species in Pennsylvania, they are still protected by the U.S. Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits taking of the birds, nests or eggs. If you spot a bald eagle nest, please use proper etiquette to avoid disturbing the birds.

Property Tax/Rent Rebate program
Older adults and Pennsylvanians with disabilities have until December 31 to apply for the state’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate program. The original deadline was June 30.
The program benefits people age 65 or older, widows and widowers age 50 or older, and the disabled 18 or older. The income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 for renters, and half of Social Security income excluded. The maximum standard rebate is $650. Supplemental rebates for certain qualifying homeowners boosts rebates to $975.
After June 30, rebates will be distributed as claims are received and processed. Applications typically take 6-8 weeks to process.

Parents Also Guilty of Too Much Screen Time

(StatePoint) Parents spend nearly the same amount of time with devices as they do with their kids, according to new research from The Genius of Play, a nonprofit initiative dedicated to raising awareness of play’s vital role in child development.
The results of the OnePoll survey of 2,000 parents of school-aged children ages 5-18 suggest that families should be finding more screen-free ways to spend time together. Half of the survey’s respondents have been asked by their child to put their phone away, and 79 percent believe that their relationship with their children would benefit if everyone spent less time on devices.
• Sixty-two percent of parents admitted to spending too much time on their cell phone while with their kids.
• Sixty-nine percent feel “addicted” to their phone.
• Parents spend almost as much one-on-one time with devices as with their kids. They are spending an average of two hours and 17 minutes of personal time on their phone per day, compared to two hours and 41 minutes of quality, screen-free time with their children.
The survey also found that while parents worry about the amount of screen time kids are getting, technology is now an integral parenting tool.
• The majority (83 percent) agree that screens and technology are necessary when raising a child in this day and age.
• Parents use screen time to keep their child occupied (58 percent), as a reward (53 percent) and to help their child calm down when they’re upset (52 percent). In addition, taking screen time away is used as a consequence (63 percent).

Take a break with us as we learn to make beautiful gifts and decorations from reused and recycled resources. If you’re in the mood for gift giving you can bring along paper towel tubes, egg cartons, soda bottles, and unwanted catalogs to share. You will go home with your own creations to help brighten your home as we near the longest night of the year! This program is best for ages 5 and up. Registration is required.

Aquatics Night
Looking to expand your knowledge of environmental science? Interested in competing in Envirothon? Join other teens 13-18 from our area in our Environmental Club on Wednesday, December 11 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm and then once a month at Jacobsburg to learn the concepts and content that you need to be competitive, not just in Envirothon, but in an environmental career. Natural resource professionals will assist in presenting each topic, assisted by teens who are familiar with Envirothon and resource conservation. The first session will explore the topic of aquatic ecology with local Waterways Conservation Officer Zachary Rudd. Investigate organisms that live in water and the issues affecting water quality. Adult advisors must be accompanied by a teen in order to attend. Registration is required.

Bat Identification
Jacobsburg Environmental Center's Speaker Series will present Aaron Haines who will speak on “Acoustic Survey Techniques for Bat Identification and Conservation” on Friday, December 13 at 7:00pm to 8:00pm.
Biologist Aaron Haines from Millersville University will talk about bat research along the Kittatinny Ridge. The Pennsylvania Wildlife Action Plan identifies 7 bats species of greatest conservation need. Researchers at Millersville University and Bat Conservation & Management Inc. conducted active monitoring for rare bat species along the Kittatinny Ridge.
Bat surveys were conducted during the summer of 2018-19 using stationary remote acoustic recording devices at 5 natural areas along the Kittatinny Ridge (including Jacobsburg EE Center). A permanent publicly accessible remote acoustic bat kiosk has just been established at Hawk Mountain. Bat survey data for summer 2018-19 will be presented. Registration is required.

Winter Wildlife Watch
On December 14 at 10:00am to 3:00pm, spend some of your Saturday watching wildlife at Jacobsburg! Our educators will have cool winter wildlife activities available at the visitor center. You can also join us for an afternoon hike in search of winter birds and animal signs. Hot chocolate will be available all day long! Registration is not required.

The Toys for Tots program has been rescheduled for December 7 from 3pm to 6pm.
  The holidays are just around the corner and that means it's time for the Annual Toys for Tots Toy Drive Event hosted by Portland Lodge No. 311 F&AM. This year's event will be held at Charter's Banquet Facility at Plainfield Township Fire Company, located at 6480 Sullivan Trail in Wind Gap, PA on Sunday, December 1st from 1-4pm.
With the donation of a new, unwrapped toy for a child 0-12 years old, they invite you to join them for a magical afternoon as they help our U.S. Marines deliver Christmas to children in need throughout Northampton County.
The U.S. Marines & Chesty, the Marine Bulldog Mascot will be escorted to the event by local police & volunteer fire companies. Welcome the true heroes of Christmas, the U.S. Marines, to the event and thank them for their service with a United States flag donated by County Councilman Matt Dietz. There will be FREE 4x6 photos in the Rockin' Photobooth with Santa. The Mav oya'la Clan Costume Club will join us so that you can meet & greet your favorite characters from the Star Wars Saga. Saturday, December 7, 2019, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Bloom Creative Studio.  The Needle Felt Snowman at Bloom Creative Studio (BCS) makes a great decoration or gift for the holiday season. The cost is $25 per person; Bloom Creative Studio is donating $5 from each one to the Relay for Life of Lehigh Valley East (LVE).

No two vendors of the same business will be permitted without prior approval in an effort to avoid duplication. Electric is NOT guaranteed. Vendors may only take up one table, unless they have purchase more space. Table space is available at a cost of $25.00 per table. Doors to the public will be open from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm
A completed registration form must be submitted to Spring Shank at shank.spring@penargylsd.org or mail to 501 W. Laurel Avenue, Pen Argyl, PA 18072. Checks should be made payable to Families First.   An email confirmation will be sent when registration and payment are received.
Important Information: All vendors and participants will be provided with one table and one chair. No other items will be provided by Families First or the Pen Argyl Area School District. Participant set up will begin at 8:15 am on Saturday. All items, decorations, and displays must be kept within the space designated to you. Vendors will be assigned a table upon payment. No food or drink sales will be permitted, as Families First will be running the snack stand. All participants are expected to clean up their table and area at the end of the event.

Christmas on Broadway
Come to downtown Bangor Thursday December 5th through Sunday December 8th for a holiday extravaganza... Christmas on Broadway.
   They are kicking things off Thursday evening 5pm to 8pm with Santa's Workshop. Children of all ages, can give your Christmas list to Santa, take part in some holiday crafts, and cookie decorating.
Visit with Santa at 30 Broadway inside the former Eunique Fashions building 5pm to 8pm. The space was graciously donated by friends at Borked PC. More holiday happenings will be located in businesses in downtown historic Bangor.

Great Slate Belt
Trivia Contest
The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold its annual “Great Slate Belt Trivia Contest” on Sunday, December 8, at 2:00 pm. Come alone or bring a team of four and test your knowledge of the history of the entire Slate Belt, from Portland to Wind Gap, Roseto, Bangor, Pen Argyl, and all surrounding townships. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team.
  A lot of fun and laughter for the entire family and friends with MC, Marc (Alex Trebek) Blau.

Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm will present its 29th annual Old Time Christmas event on December 7, 8 and December 14, 15 with candlelit tours leaving every 15 minutes beginning at 3:00 p.m., with the last group going out at 7:00 p.m.
Gather around a bonfire while you wait for your visit to the 1800s to begin. Guides in period clothing will lead guests on their journey into the past beginning with this year’s Victorian skit. Glimpse an 1890s
Afterwards it’s on to the living Nativity located in the barnyard which includes the Quiet Valley farm animals and offers a look at the foundation of this special celebration including a soloist and scripture readings. Then off to a simple log cabin where visitors experience the rustic Christmas of the early 1800s. At the one room schoolhouse it is a jolly time as the school marm leads both the musicians and guests in singing their favorite seasonal carols.
All funds raised support the mission of the non-profit farm museum.
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-12, with those under three admitted free. You will be outside part of the time so remember to dress warmly.

This year we will also celebrate the successes of several women who have spent 2 years rebuilding their lives at Bloom, a Thistle Farms sister community. Intro to Glass Mosaic
Join Bloom for an introductory workshop in glass mosaic. Choices are an 8x10 Cardinal or a 10x10 Moonlit Tree. All supplies and guided instruction included. This is a two session workshop to complete the project. Session one takes place on Monday December 9th from 6-8pm and session two concludes on Tuesday December 17th from 6-8pm. Aquatics Night
Looking to expand your knowledge of environmental science? Interested in competing in Envirothon? Join other teens 13-18 from our area in our Environmental Club on Wednesday, December 11 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm and then once a month at Jacobsburg to learn the concepts and content that you need to be competitive, not just in Envirothon, but in an environmental career. Natural resource professionals will assist in presenting each topic, assisted by teens who are familiar with Envirothon and resource conservation.
The first session will explore the topic of aquatic ecology with local Waterways Conservation Officer Zachary Rudd. Investigate organisms that live in water and the issues affecting water quality. Adult advisers must be accompanied by a teen in order to attend. Registration is required.

Colored Pencil Workshop
   Thursday, December 12, 2019, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM at Bloom. For December, our subject will be a poinsettia. Learn the basics of colored pencil technique while exploring shape, shading, and color. New to drawing? This workshop is designed for anyone to have fun and get something out of it. No pressure, just encouraging teaching.

Columbia Fire Co. No. 1 is Roseto will be sponsoring their annual Breakfast with Santa on Saturday December 14th from 9-11am at the Roseto Municipal Building.
  The event is open to all children from Roseto borough as well as children and grandchildren of current Fire Co. members.

Christmas at Boulton

Complete your visit by stopping by the Early American Craft Center where colonial crafters will be demonstrating their work. Enjoy some light refreshments including our famous Jacobsburg Brew!

One Starry Night
  Ready to take your family back in time? Come to One Starry Night and experience Christmas like never before! You’ll taste the food, see the manger, and participate in community life as you relive Bethlehem at the time of Jesus’s birth. The entire family is invited to visit the stations and join in activities for all ages. A family photo of your time in Bethlehem will keep the story of Christmas alive throughout the year!
One Starry Night takes place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 15 at East Bangor United Methodist Community Church, conveniently located on Route 512 (136 West Central Ave.) in East Bangor.

PAHS 'Senior Day'
  Enjoy a fun-filled “Senior Day” hosted by the officers of the Class of 2022 at Pen Argyl Area High School Wednesday December 18 from 8:30 am TO 12:30 pm .Doors open at 8:15am.
They will be serving a continental breakfast, and lunch will be provided for all attendees. Other activities include quoits, tours of the building, technology lessons, musical entertainment and Bingo.

First Day Hikes
Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at 10:00am to 11:30am or 1:00pm to 2:30pm at Jacobsburg.  Get out and get hiking on the first day of 2020! Join educator Lauren Forster for one of two 2-mile hikes. We will explore the old growth forest of Henrys Woods and the fields of the Homestead Trail.
The hikes will leave at 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM from the visitor center at 400 Belfast Road. Dress for the weather, wear comfortable hiking shoes, and bring a water bottle. Registration is required as spaces are limited.
