(StatePoint) Parents spend nearly the same amount of time with devices as they do with their kids, according to new research from The Genius of Play, a nonprofit initiative dedicated to raising awareness of play’s vital role in child development. The results of the OnePoll survey of 2,000 parents of school-aged children ages 5-18 suggest that families should be finding more screen-free ways to spend time together. Half of the survey’s respondents have been asked by their child to put their phone away, and 79 percent believe that their relationship with their children would benefit if everyone spent less time on devices. • Sixty-two percent of parents admitted to spending too much time on their cell phone while with their kids. • Sixty-nine percent feel “addicted” to their phone. • Parents spend almost as much one-on-one time with devices as with their kids. They are spending an average of two hours and 17 minutes of personal time on their phone per day, compared to two hours and 41 minutes of quality, screen-free time with their children. The survey also found that while parents worry about the amount of screen time kids are getting, technology is now an integral parenting tool. • The majority (83 percent) agree that screens and technology are necessary when raising a child in this day and age. • Parents use screen time to keep their child occupied (58 percent), as a reward (53 percent) and to help their child calm down when they’re upset (52 percent). The PUMP food pantry is open to qualifying clients every Monday morning from 10:00 am to 11:30 am and again Monday evening 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Prior to receiving food assistance, clients must register and provide proof of residency. Families are permitted to receive food every two weeks.
Their monthly overhead is $4,000 which is needed to cover rent, electricity etc. To maintain this vital service to the community they are seeking "generous contributions" for additional, much-needed storage space and maintenance. Home Heating Assistance
LIHEAP is a federally funded program that helps individuals and families pay their heating bills through home heating energy assistance grants. It also provides crisis grants to help in the event of an emergency or if a resident is in danger of losing his or her heat due to broken equipment, lack of fuel or termination of utility service. The income eligibility guidelines for LIHEAP are set at 150% of the federal poverty income level. For example, the income limit for an individual is $18,735; for a couple, the limit is $25,365; and for a family of four, it is $38,625. A new confidential support group for veterans and first responders is available at A Clean Slate on the corner of Broadway and First St. (Rt. 191) in Bangor. Snowshoes and Hiking Poles are available at Jacobsburg Visitor Center, 400 Belfast Road, Nazareth every Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm. Borrow snowshoe equipment to use on Jacobsburg’s trails this winter! Snowshoes are available for folks of any age or shoe size, including small children. Snowshoes will not be made available during times of insufficient snow cover, usually at least six inches of snow is required. Security Grant Program for Nonprofits
Faith-based institutions and nonprofit organizations will be eligible for grants to boost security at their facilities under a new law approved by the General Assembly and signed by the governor.
Act 83 of 2019 will make funding available to faith-based institutions and nonprofits that serve individuals, groups or institutions listed by the FBI as at risk for hate crime incidents.
Grant awards will range from $5,000 to $150,000. Faith-based institutions and nonprofits could use the money for a variety of security planning, equipment and technology needs, including surveillance cameras, emergency communications equipment, electronic locksets, threat assessments and building upgrades.
The program is similar to the School Safety Security Grant Program, which helps schools meet a variety of security needs. It will be administered by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. Applications are expected to become available early next year.

Citizens Shape Our State Parks
From one state park in 1893, to 121 state parks in 2015, DCNR’s Bureau of State Parks has blossomed into one of the largest state park systems in the eastern United States -- comprising nearly 300,000 acres statewide.
Thanks to the work of inspired leaders and concerned citizens, these public natural places have turned the once “Pennsylvania Desert” -- from the boom of coal and lumber industries after the Civil War -- into a forest wonderland.
From the 1950s through the 1970s, the number of state parks grew from 50 to 111 as part of a goal of locating a state park within 25 miles of every citizen in Pennsylvania.
In the 1980s, an ongoing effort was started to improve park facilities and to support environmental education and interpretation.
In the early 1990s, State Parks 2000 was the initiative that helped guide the modernization of state parks. This strategic planning effort called for:
- The modernization of facilities
- Expanding environmental education program offerings
- Designating natural areas in parks to better protect sensitive or special natural resources

Join them for a panel discussion composed of representatives from community agencies, organizations, and experts in their field. The panel will discuss how they each view the issue of underage drinking in LGBT youth, what strategies are currently utilized to prevent it, and what the community can do to assist to further these prevention efforts.
After the discussion there will be a Q&A period for community members to ask panelists questions.

While everyone wants to make the most of their vacation, travel can do a number on one’s health, and during flu season, the risk of feeling unwell is even higher. Feel your best with these tips:

• Getting medical attention away from home is tough. Travel smart with over-the-counter products that are homeopathic and easy to use. Aquatics Night
Looking to expand your knowledge of environmental science? Interested in competing in Envirothon? Join other teens 13-18 from our area in our Environmental Club on Wednesday, December 11 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm and then once a month at Jacobsburg to learn the concepts and content that you need to be competitive, not just in Envirothon, but in an environmental career. Natural resource professionals will assist in presenting each topic, assisted by teens who are familiar with Envirothon and resource conservation. The first session will explore the topic of aquatic ecology with local Waterways Conservation Officer Zachary Rudd. Investigate organisms that live in water and the issues affecting water quality. Adult advisors must be accompanied by a teen in order to attend. Registration is required.
Bat Identification
Jacobsburg Environmental Center's Speaker Series will present Aaron Haines who will speak on “Acoustic Survey Techniques for Bat Identification and Conservation” on Friday, December 13 at 7:00pm to 8:00pm.
Biologist Aaron Haines from Millersville University will talk about bat research along the Kittatinny Ridge. The Pennsylvania Wildlife Action Plan identifies 7 bats species of greatest conservation need. Researchers at Millersville University and Bat Conservation & Management Inc. conducted active monitoring for rare bat species along the Kittatinny Ridge.
Bat surveys were conducted during the summer of 2018-19 using stationary remote acoustic recording devices at 5 natural areas along the Kittatinny Ridge (including Jacobsburg EE Center). A permanent publicly accessible remote acoustic bat kiosk has just been established at Hawk Mountain. Bat survey data for summer 2018-19 will be presented. Registration is required.

Winter Wildlife Watch
On December 14 at 10:00am to 3:00pm, spend some of your Saturday watching wildlife at Jacobsburg! Our educators will have cool winter wildlife activities available at the visitor center. You can also join us for an afternoon hike in search of winter birds and animal signs. Hot chocolate will be available all day long! Registration is not required.

The Toys for Tots program has been rescheduled for December 7 from 3pm to 6pm.
The holidays are just around the corner and that means it's time for the Annual Toys for Tots Toy Drive Event hosted by Portland Lodge No. 311 F&AM. This year's event will be held at Charter's Banquet Facility at Plainfield Township Fire Company, located at 6480 Sullivan Trail in Wind Gap, PA on Sunday, December 1st from 1-4pm.
With the donation of a new, unwrapped toy for a child 0-12 years old, they invite you to join them for a magical afternoon as they help our U.S. Marines deliver Christmas to children in need throughout Northampton County.
The U.S. Marines & Chesty, the Marine Bulldog Mascot will be escorted to the event by local police & volunteer fire companies. Welcome the true heroes of Christmas, the U.S. Marines, to the event and thank them for their service with a United States flag donated by County Councilman Matt Dietz. There will be FREE 4x6 photos in the Rockin' Photobooth with Santa. The Mav oya'la Clan Costume Club will join us so that you can meet & greet your favorite characters from the Star Wars Saga. Needle Felt Snowman
Saturday, December 7, 2019, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Bloom Creative Studio. The Needle Felt Snowman at Bloom Creative Studio (BCS) makes a great decoration or gift for the holiday season. The cost is $25 per person; Bloom Creative Studio is donating $5 from each one to the Relay for Life of Lehigh Valley East (LVE).

A Holiday Bazaar will be held Dec. 7 in the Wind Gap Middle School Gymnasium vendor will be selected on a first-come, first-served fashion. No two vendors of the same business will be permitted without prior approval in an effort to avoid duplication. Electric is NOT guaranteed. Vendors may only take up one table, unless they have purchase more space. Table space is available at a cost of $25.00 per table. Doors to the public will be open from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm
A completed registration form must be submitted to Spring Shank at [email protected] or mail to 501 W. Laurel Avenue, Pen Argyl, PA 18072. Checks should be made payable to Families First. An email confirmation will be sent when registration and payment are received.
Important Information: All vendors and participants will be provided with one table and one chair. No other items will be provided by Families First or the Pen Argyl Area School District. Participant set up will begin at 8:15 am on Saturday. All items, decorations, and displays must be kept within the space designated to you. Vendors will be assigned a table upon payment. No food or drink sales will be permitted, as Families First will be running the snack stand. All participants are expected to clean up their table and area at the end of the event.

Great Slate Belt
Trivia Contest
The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold its annual “Great Slate Belt Trivia Contest” on Sunday, December 8, at 2:00 pm. Come alone or bring a team of four and test your knowledge of the history of the entire Slate Belt, from Portland to Wind Gap, Roseto, Bangor, Pen Argyl, and all surrounding townships. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team.

Quiet Valley Christmas
Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm will present its 29th annual Old Time Christmas event on December 7, 8 and December 14, 15 with candlelit tours leaving every 15 minutes beginning at 3:00 p.m., with the last group going out at 7:00 p.m.
Gather around a bonfire while you wait for your visit to the 1800s to begin. Guides in period clothing will lead guests on their journey into the past beginning with this year’s Victorian skit. Glimpse an 1890s
Afterwards it’s on to the living Nativity located in the barnyard which includes the Quiet Valley farm animals and offers a look at the foundation of this special celebration including a soloist and scripture readings. Then off to a simple log cabin where visitors experience the rustic Christmas of the early 1800s. At the one room schoolhouse it is a jolly time as the school marm leads both the musicians and guests in singing their favorite seasonal carols.
All funds raised support the mission of the non-profit farm museum.
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-12, with those under three admitted free. You will be outside part of the time so remember to dress warmly.

Join other teens 13-18 from our area in our Environmental Club on Wednesday, December 11 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm and then once a month at Jacobsburg to learn the concepts and content that you need to be competitive, not just in Envirothon, but in an environmental career. Natural resource professionals will assist in presenting each topic, assisted by teens who are familiar with Envirothon and resource conservation.
The first session will explore the topic of aquatic ecology with local Waterways Conservation Officer Zachary Rudd. Investigate organisms that live in water and the issues affecting water quality. Adult advisers must be accompanied by a teen in order to attend. Registration is required.

Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm will present its 29th annual Old Time Christmas event on December 7, 8 and December 14, 15 with candlelit tours leaving every 15 minutes beginning at 3:00 p.m., with the last group going out at 7:00 p.m.
Gather around a bonfire while you wait for your visit to the 1800s to begin. Guides in period clothing will lead guests on their journey into the past beginning with this year’s Victorian skit. Glimpse an 1890s
Afterwards it’s on to the living Nativity located in the barnyard which includes the Quiet Valley farm animals and offers a look at the foundation of this special celebration including a soloist and scripture readings. Then off to a simple log cabin where visitors experience the rustic Christmas of the early 1800s. At the one room schoolhouse it is a jolly time as the school marm leads both the musicians and guests in singing their favorite seasonal carols.
All funds raised support the mission of the non-profit farm museum.
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-12, with those under three admitted free. You will be outside part of the time so remember to dress warmly.

Ready to take your family back in time? Come to One Starry Night and experience Christmas like never before! You’ll taste the food, see the manger, and participate in community life as you relive Bethlehem at the time of Jesus’s birth. The entire family is invited to visit the stations and join in activities for all ages. A family photo of your time in Bethlehem will keep the story of Christmas alive throughout the year!

First Day Hikes
Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at 10:00am to 11:30am or 1:00pm to 2:30pm at Jacobsburg. Get out and get hiking on the first day of 2020! Join educator Lauren Forster for one of two 2-mile hikes. We will explore the old growth forest of Henrys Woods and the fields of the Homestead Trail.
The hikes will leave at 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM from the visitor center at 400 Belfast Road. Dress for the weather, wear comfortable hiking shoes, and bring a water bottle. Registration is required as spaces are limited.

Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world on December 3, 2019 and every day. It was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good.
Bloom Creative Studio is a program of Connections for Women, a local community based non-profit organization serving women in and around the Slate Belt. Our studio is a supportive workplace for women leaving lives of violence and addiction. The women receive 2 years of rent-free housing while they heal from the trauma that life on the streets brings. When a woman enters our program she begins a 90-day intensive outpatient recovery program and then continues to build a life free from addiction and violence, with trauma informed and art therapy, life coaching and vocational training. Bloom Bangor graduates go on to live successful, self-sufficient and fulfilling lives, creating a new future for themselves, their families, our community and our economy.

Bat Identification
Jacobsburg Environmental Center's Speaker Series will present Aaron Haines who will speak on “Acoustic Survey Techniques for Bat Identification and Conservation” on Friday, December 13 at 7:00pm to 8:00pm.
Biologist Aaron Haines from Millersville University will talk about bat research along the Kittatinny Ridge. The Pennsylvania Wildlife Action Plan identifies 7 bats species of greatest conservation need. Researchers at Millersville University and Bat Conservation & Management Inc. conducted active monitoring for rare bat species along the Kittatinny Ridge.
Bat surveys were conducted during the summer of 2018-19 using stationary remote acoustic recording devices at 5 natural areas along the Kittatinny Ridge (including Jacobsburg EE Center). A permanent publicly accessible remote acoustic bat kiosk has just been established at Hawk Mountain. Bat survey data for summer 2018-19 will be presented. Registration is required.

Winter Wildlife Watch
On December 14 at 10:00am to 3:00pm, spend some of your Saturday watching wildlife at Jacobsburg! Our educators will have cool winter wildlife activities available at the visitor center. You can also join us for an afternoon hike in search of winter birds and animal signs. Hot chocolate will be available all day long! Registration is not required.

The Toys for Tots program has been rescheduled for December 7 from 3pm to 6pm.
The holidays are just around the corner and that means it's time for the Annual Toys for Tots Toy Drive Event hosted by Portland Lodge No. 311 F&AM. This year's event will be held at Charter's Banquet Facility at Plainfield Township Fire Company, located at 6480 Sullivan Trail in Wind Gap, PA on Sunday, December 1st from 1-4pm.
With the donation of a new, unwrapped toy for a child 0-12 years old, they invite you to join them for a magical afternoon as they help our U.S. Marines deliver Christmas to children in need throughout Northampton County.
The U.S. Marines & Chesty, the Marine Bulldog Mascot will be escorted to the event by local police & volunteer fire companies. Welcome the true heroes of Christmas, the U.S. Marines, to the event and thank them for their service with a United States flag donated by County Councilman Matt Dietz. There will be FREE 4x6 photos in the Rockin' Photobooth with Santa. The Mav oya'la Clan Costume Club will join us so that you can meet & greet your favorite characters from the Star Wars Saga. A Holiday Bazaar will be held Dec. 7 in the Wind Gap Middle School Gymnasium vendor will be selected on a first-come, first-served fashion. No two vendors of the same business will be permitted without prior approval in an effort to avoid duplication. Electric is NOT guaranteed. Vendors may only take up one table, unless they have purchase more space. Table space is available at a cost of $25.00 per table. Doors to the public will be open from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm

The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold its annual “Great Slate Belt Trivia Contest” on Sunday, December 8, at 2:00 pm. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-12, with those under three admitted free. You will be outside part of the time so remember to dress warmly.

Christmas at Boulton
Come to Boulton for a very special Christmas experience on Saturday, Dec. 14th 11am-4pm & Sunday, Dec. 15th 12-4pm!
This special weekend will showcase the J. Joseph Henry House, adorned in beautiful Victorian Christmas decor, featuring a marvelous exhibit of Henry family clothing. Experience the warmth of the fire in the Summer Kitchen and view a display of historic carriages and sleighs. The new Blacksmith Shop display will also be open for viewing.
Admire the Nicholas Hawk Gun Shop, an authentic, 200-year old log gun shop. Tour the Pennsylvania Longrifle Museum featuring more than 100 historic arms on display and visit our renovated Museum Gift Shop, newly stocked with unique items for holiday gift giving.
Complete your visit by stopping by the Early American Craft Center where colonial crafters will be demonstrating their work. Enjoy some light refreshments including our famous Jacobsburg Brew!

One Starry Night
Ready to take your family back in time? Come to One Starry Night and experience Christmas like never before! You’ll taste the food, see the manger, and participate in community life as you relive Bethlehem at the time of Jesus’s birth. The entire family is invited to visit the stations and join in activities for all ages. A family photo of your time in Bethlehem will keep the story of Christmas alive throughout the year!
One Starry Night takes place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 15 at East Bangor United Methodist Community Church, conveniently located on Route 512 (136 West Central Ave.) in East Bangor.

PAHS 'Senior Day'
Enjoy a fun-filled “Senior Day” hosted by the officers of the Class of 2022 at Pen Argyl Area High School Wednesday December 18 from 8:30 am TO 12:30 pm .Doors open at 8:15am.
They will be serving a continental breakfast, and lunch will be provided for all attendees. Other activities include quoits, tours of the building, technology lessons, musical entertainment and Bingo.

January 1
First Day Hikes
Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at 10:00am to 11:30am or 1:00pm to 2:30pm at Jacobsburg. Get out and get hiking on the first day of 2020! Join educator Lauren Forster for one of two 2-mile hikes. We will explore the old growth forest of Henrys Woods and the fields of the Homestead Trail.
The hikes will leave at 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM from the visitor center at 400 Belfast Road. Dress for the weather, wear comfortable hiking shoes, and bring a water bottle. Registration is required as spaces are limited.
