The Sixth Day of Christmas.........

The Feast of St Egwin of Worcester (Day 6 December 30)
: You say you’re not familiar with today’s saint? Chances are you aren’t—unless you’re especially informed about Benedictine bishops who established monasteries in medieval England.
Born in the seventh century of royal blood, Egwin entered a monastery, and was enthusiastically received by royalty, clergy, and the people as the bishop of Worcester, England. As a bishop he was known as a protector of orphans and the widowed and a fair judge. Who could argue with that?
His popularity didn’t hold up among members of the clergy, however. They saw him as overly strict, while he felt he was simply trying to correct abuses and impose appropriate disciplines. Bitter resentments arose, and Egwin made his way to Rome to present his case to Pope Constantine. The case against Egwin was examined and annulled.
Upon his return to England, Egwin founded Evesham Abbey, which became one of the great Benedictine houses of medieval England. It was dedicated to Mary, who had reportedly made it known to Egwin just where a church should be built in her honor.
Egwin died at the abbey on December 30, 717. Following his burial many miracles were attributed to him: The blind could see, the deaf could hear, the sick were healed.

Did You Know That....

The liver can regrow to full
size even if 75% is removed.
Picture

Take away three quarters of the liver and it can still survive. It will slowly grow back over time. It is the only organ in the body that has the capacity to regenerate.

Every 10 years after 30, you
lose a half an inch in height
Picture

.As people grow older, they also get shorter. It’s because the discs between the vertebrae start to flatten. It happens very slowly and most won’t even notice the change in height.

The Fifth Day of Christmas.........

The Feast of St. Thomas Becket - D
ay 5 (December 29 ): St Thomas Becket was Archbishop of Canterbury in the 12th century and was murdered on December 29 1170 for challenging the King’s authority over the Church. Becket was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his murder in 1170. He is venerated as a saint and martyr by both the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion. He engaged in conflict with Henry II, King of England, over the rights and privileges of the Church and was murdered by followers of the king in Canterbury Cathedral. Soon after his death, he was canonised by Pope Alexander III. Becket was nominated as Archbishop of Canterbury in 1162, several months after the death of Theobald. His election was confirmed on May 23 1162 by a royal council of bishops and noblemen. Henry may have hoped that Becket would continue to put the royal government first, rather than the church. However, the famous transformation of Becket into an ascetic occurred at this time.

Audubon Climate Watch Survey

Picture

Changes to climate and the environment continue to have an impact on birds all around the world. The National Audubon Society created its Climate Watch project a few years ago to specifically track how birds may be responding to climate change.
You participate by observing birds in your area at a specific time using a specific protocol. Scientists will then analyze the data. Take note: The next survey will take place from
January 15 through February 15, 2020, and is open to anyone with an interest in birds. Learn more.

Help Track Bald Eagle Population

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking for the public’s help to track the state’s growing bald eagle population. After reaching a low of just three nesting bald eagle pairs in the Commonwealth in the early 1980s, officials now estimate there are more than 300 nesting pairs here.
While bald eagles are no longer listed as a threatened species in Pennsylvania, they are still protected by the U.S. Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits taking of the birds, nests or eggs. If you spot a bald eagle nest, please use proper etiquette to avoid disturbing the birds.

Join Project Feeder Watch

Picture
A new season of the Project FeederWatch citizen-science project has just launched and you can still get in on the counting action to help scientists understand trends at feeders across the continent. FeederWatch participants count their feeder birds on two days per week that they choose (or as often as they can) between November and early April. Thousands of participants in the U.S. and Canada have been doing the count for 33 years and have amassed a tremendous database of observations that scientists use to track changes in bird populations over time. It's one of the simple things you can do to help birds–count them! Learn how to join Project FeederWatch.

The Third Day of Christmas.........
The Feast of Saint John's Day. St John the Apostle, wrote the Book of Revelation, and is the patron saint of live, loyalty, friendships and authors.
The feast day of Saint John in the Roman Catholic Church, which calls him "Saint John, Apostle and Evangelist", and in the Anglican Communion and Lutheran Calendars, which call him "Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist", is on December 27.
In the Tridentine Calendar (calendar of saints) he was commemorated also on each of the following days up to and including January 3, the Octave (eight days after Christmas) of the December 27  feast.
This Octave was abolished by Pope Pius XII in 1955. Born in Bethsaida, John was called while mending his nets to follow Jesus. He became the beloved disciple of Jesus. He wrote the fourth Gospel, three Epistles and the Apocalypse. His passages on the pre-existence of the Word, who by His Incarnation became the light of the world and the life of our souls, are among the finest of the New Testament. He is the evangelist of the divinity of Christ and His fraternal love.

The Fourth Day of Christmas.........

The Feast of the Holy Innocents - when people remember
the baby boys which King Herod killed when he was trying to find and kill the Baby Jesus.
Although Herod was the 'King of the Jews', he wasn't actually a Jew! He was a Nabatean and was really a 'puppet king' for the Romans. Herod was hated by most Jews and he didn't like them either! So when the Magi said there was a new 'King of the Jews' - who was actually Jewish - Herod was angry and afraid the new King could take his power away.
Because Herod was unable to find out where Jesus was from he thought the only way of making sure Jesus was killed, was to kill every baby boy under two years old in Bethlehem and the surrounding area. Probably only about 20 babies would have been killed, but even that fact is really horrible. So his cruelty would had brought terror and grief to many homes. But Jesus was kept safe as Joseph took him and Mary to Egypt just in time. This was not the first time that Herod had killed people to keep them quiet - he even had killed people in his own family in the past!

Health Benefits for Winter Outdoors

Picture
Many people think that spending time outdoors in winter can lead to colds or the flu, however, it is spending more time indoors that leads to the spreading of these viruses. Studies show that there are numerous health benefits to spending time outdoors in winter, including:
  •   The colder temperatures help your mind work better! Studies show your brain works better when it’s cold!
  • When it’s cold, your body works harder to maintain your core temp, so it might help you burn more calories.
  • Colder temperatures help decrease inflammation and pain all over.
  • Colder temperatures can activate your immune system, giving you a boost to fight of those winter viruses.
  • Sunlight and exercise endorphins from outdoor recreation can boost your mood significantly and help with those winter blues.
  • Spending time outdoors on sunny days in the winter can help your body produce vitamin D, which we tend to produce less of in the winter by spending more time indoors.
And of course, dressing appropriately, staying on top of the weather forecast, and being prepared before you head out are important factors in keeping you safe and healthy outdoors in winter.

Winter is Great for Going Outdoors

Picture
There are many benefits to spending some time outdoors in the winter. One of them being that it will be less crowded, allowing you to really take in the peace and quiet that winter in the outdoors provides.
Other benefits include:
  •   A great time for stargazing! The colder nights and dry temperatures make for clear night skies.
  •   A great time for birding! The bare trees make it easier to see and identify birds.
  •    A great time for scenic views! The change in the trees and landscape offer new ways to see and experience the natural world -- especially when covered in a blanket of snow.
  •    Opportunities to try a new recreation activity. Snow and cold bring other recreational activities to experience in the outdoors like snowshoeing, skiing, ice fishing, or snowmobiling.
In addition to the outdoor experiences you can have, spending time outdoors in winter is actually good for you, too.

Today is Boxing Day

Picture
Elaine Lemm/The Spruce
First I must say, it has nothing to do with the sport of boxing.
The most straightforward answer would be that they are a little greedy in the UK and Ireland in wanting a more extended holiday. It is not enough for them to have only Christmas Day celebrations, they have added to this another event called Boxing Day. But the answer is not that simple.
Boxing Day is a national Bank Holiday, a day to spend with family and friends and to eat up all the leftovers of Christmas Day. The origins of the day, however, are steeped in history and tradition.
Arguments abound on the origins of the name Boxing Day. All the answers below are valid, so maybe it is one, or even all of them.
The name is a reference to holiday gifts. A ‘Christmas Box’ in Britain is a name for a Christmas present. Boxing Day was traditionally a day off for servants and the day when they received a ‘Christmas Box’ from the master. The servants would also go home on Boxing Day to give ‘Christmas Boxes’ to their families.
Boxing Day is also a time when the British show their eccentricity by taking part in all kinds of silly activities. These include bizarre traditions including swimming the icy cold English Channel, fun runs, and charity events.
Another ‘sport’ to emerge in recent years is shopping. Sadly, what was once a day of relaxation and family time sees the start of the sales. Sales used to start in January, post-New Year, but the desire to grab a bargain and for shops to off-load stock means many now begin on Boxing Day.

The Second Day of Christmas.........
St Stephen’s Day. He was the first Christian martyr (someone who dies for their faith). It's also the day when the Christmas Carol 'Good King Wenceslas' takes place. Saint Stephen is first mentioned in Acts of the Apostles as one of seven deacons appointed by the Apostles to distribute food and charitable aid to poorer members of the community in the early church. According to Orthodox belief, he was the eldest and is therefore called "archdeacon" (December 26 is  also known as Boxing Day - See Below)

Good King Wenceslas This carol was written in Victorian Britain by John Mason Neale to a traditional folk tune. It was written in the town of East Grinstead, in the county of West Sussex, at Sackville College where he was staying at the time. The story in the carol is about the King (or Duke) of Bohemia (an area in Central Europe which is now part of the Czech Republic) from over 1000 years ago, seeing peasants, on Boxing Day, from his castle and taking food and wood to them. The story in the carol was probably completely made up! (According to Wikipedia)
Wenceslas' father was the Duke of Bohemia and a Christian but it's thought that his mother might have been a pagan. His father died when he was 12 and, as he was not old enough to become Duke until he was 18, his mother took control of the land as regent. During this time his grandmother, Ludmilla, took care of Wenceslas and brought him up as a Christian (she smuggled priests into the house to help teach him). It's thought that his mother had Ludmilla banished to a distant castle where she was murdered by the Queen's guards!
Wenceslas was still a Christian after this and learned to read and write, something which was unusual for even a King/Duke in those days! He had local Bishops smuggled in at night to teach him the Bible. When he reached 18, Wenceslas took control of his dukedom. He then defended Bohemia from a couple of invasions by Dukes of neighboring regions and legend says that he banished his mother and her pagan followers from his castle.
After four years of happiness, when Wenceslas was 22, his brother Boleslav, became very jealous of Wenceslas and plotted (possibly with the pagan followers of their mother) to kill Wenceslas. Boleslav invited Wenceslas to celebrate a saint's day with him, but on the way to the Church, Wenceslas was attacked and stabbed to death by three of Boleslav's followers!
