The First Day of Christmas

Picture
The 12 Days of Christmas are now most famous as a song about someone receiving lots of presents from their 'true love'. However, to get to the song there had to be the days to start with!
The 12 Days of Christmas start on Christmas Day and last until the evening of the 5th January - also known as Twelfth Night. The 12 Days have been celebrated in Europe since before the middle ages and were a time of celebration.
The 12 Days each traditionally celebrate a feast day for a saint and/or have different celebrations:
Day 1 (25th December): Christmas Day - celebrating the Birth of Jesus

One of the only real threats to hair is fire. Besides that, it decays at an extremely slow rate. It’s even resistant to various types of chemicals and acids.

Slate Belt Folk Art Presentation

Picture
The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Sunday, January 19th at 2:00 PM. Speaker for the afternoon will be John Reinhart, President of St. David’s Welsh Society and former Superintendent of the Bangor and Easton Area School Districts.  Reinhart will conduct a program on “Slate Folk Art of the Area”.  A founding member of the Heritage Center, and an educator for over forty-eight years, he and his wife Judy have been collecting decorated slate for over fifty years. Both are lifelong residents of the Slate Belt and both have had family members who were engaged in the slate industry. An important part of their collection of artifacts includes items that were created and given away as gifts and tokes of affection.
The Slaters used the skills they acquired while working in the local slate quarries. These items were made by people without formal art training and instruction. Some items reflect ethnic and cultural interests. While much of the slate produced by local quarries was for architectural purposed, the quarries also provided this by-product which was used to produce decorated mantels, game boards, bookends, and household articles, including lamps. Reinhart’s book, From the Slate: O’r Lechen, The Welsh and the Folk Art of Pennsylvania’s Slate Belt, published through the Heritage Center and funded by Merchant’s Bank provided readers with the first documentation of examples of the slate folk art created in the region. The Heritage Center has its own extensive collection of slate folk art. The presentation will include both artifacts and photos of the beautiful items the Reinhart’s have collected.
The event is free and open to the public. The Heritage Center is located at 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, PA. For additional information contact: Karen Brewer @ 484-894-5661.

Help Track Bald Eagle Population

Picture
The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking for the public’s help to track the state’s growing bald eagle population. After reaching a low of just three nesting bald eagle pairs in the Commonwealth in the early 1980s, officials now estimate there are more than 300 nesting pairs here.
While bald eagles are no longer listed as a threatened species in Pennsylvania, they are still protected by the U.S. Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits taking of the birds, nests or eggs. If you spot a bald eagle nest, please use proper etiquette to avoid disturbing the birds.

Bangor Teachers Sign 5-year Contract

Picture
Bangor Area School District teachers and the Bangor school board have entered into a new, five-year contract after months of negotiations, which is retroactive to September 1, 2019 and will continue through June 30, 2024.
Under the new contract, all teachers will receive the same “flat-dollar” annual raise that  includes a $1,350 raise in the first and second years of the contract, $1,500 in the third year, $1,600 in the fourth year and $1,700 in the final year.
Over the duration of the five-year pact, starting salaries for beginning teachers with a bachelor’s degree will rise from $46,240 to $50,000 and top salaries will be raised to $93,313. Health care deductibles will remain the same although the teachers have agreed to raises in copay and prescription amounts.
According to a joint statement released by school board president Ken Brewer and BAEA president Ed Zeigenfuss sent to Town Topics, “Negotiations held over many months produced an agreement that recognizes the board’s commitment to maintaining modest tax increases for local families, while also valuing Bangor’s dedicated teachers with competitive salaries, benefits and working conditions.”

Christmas or Xmas?

Picture
Christmas is also sometimes known as Xmas. Some people don't think it's correct to call Christmas 'Xmas' since that takes the 'Christ' (Jesus) out of Christmas. (As Christmas comes from Christ-Mass, the Church service that celebrated the birth of Jesus.)
Moreover, in the Greek language and alphabet, the letter that looks like an X is the Greek letter chi / Χ (pronounced 'kye' - it rhymes with 'eye') which is the first letter of the Greek word for Christ, Christos.
The early church used the first two letters of Christos in the Greek alphabet 'chi' and 'rho' to create a monogram (symbol) to represent the name of Jesus. This looks like an X with a small p on the top.
So Xmas can also mean Christmas; but it should also be pronounced 'Christmas' rather than 'ex-mas.'

Bells Ring at Christmas

Picture
Church Bells, have traditionally been associated with Christmas for a long time. In the Anglican and Catholic churches, the church day starts at sunset, so any service after that is the first service of the day. So a service on Christmas Eve after sunset is traditionally the first service of Christmas day! In churches that have a Bell or Bells, They are often rung to signal the start of this service.
In the Catholic Church, Christmas and Easter are the only times that Mass is allowed to be held at Midnight. It's traditional that at both midnight Masses, the church and altar bells too in many cases are rung while the Priest says the "Gloria" (Gloria in excelsis Deo).
In Victorian times, it was very fashionable to go carol singing with small handbells to play the tune of the carol. Sometimes there would only be the bells and no singing! Handbell ringing is still popular today.
Perhaps the most famous bells at Christmas now are the ones in the song 'Jingle Bells'. However, the song was first called "One Horse Open Sleigh" and was originally published, in the USA, in September 1857 as a Thanksgiving song and NOT a Christmas one! But it soon became associated with Christmas because of the 'snowy' lyrics and many choirs were singing it at Christmas in the 1860s and 1870s. It was first recorded in 1889. Often only the first verse (and chorus) are now sung.      The other verses are about driving the 'one horse open sleigh' rather fast and crashing it!
Jingle Bells was also the first song to be broadcast from space in December 1965 when the astronauts Tom Stafford and Wally Schirra said they had spotted a sleigh in space! They then took out a harmonica and sleigh bells which they had smuggled onto the Gemini 6 space craft and played and sang the song to mission control.

Who is The Elf on a Shelf ?

Picture
The Elf on a Shelf is a very new Christmas 'tradition'. The Elf first made its appearance in the book "The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition" in 2005. (This site was started in 2000, so this site is five years older than this new 'tradition'!)
The book was written by Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell and is based on a family tradition that Chanda and her sister, Christa, had when they were growing up in Georgia, USA. Carol Aebersold had an elf doll that would 'magically' appear in a different part of the house every morning running up to Christmas. Chanda and Christa were told that the Elf was watching them and it would tell Santa if they'd been naughty.
In 2004 the book was written, telling the story of the Elf being sent by Santa to watch over Chanda and Christa, and it was published in 2005. The official book Elf on a Shelf book comes with an Elf. There are two rules with the elf: You can't touch the elf or it will lose its magic and that the elf moves when children are asleep.

The Origin of Candy Canes

Picture
The first recorded 'candy stick' comes from 1837 at an exhibition in Massachusetts. They started as straight white sugar sticks and a few years later the red stripes were added. The first time they are documented as being called 'candy canes' comes in 1866; and their first connection to Christmas comes from 1874. Early recipes had them as simply 'sugar' flavored. But we're now used to them being flavored with peppermint or wintergreen.  Around 1920, Bob McCormack, from Georgia started making canes for his friends and family. They became more and more popular and he started his own business called Bob's Candies. Bob McCormack's brother-in-law, Gregory Harding Keller, who was a Catholic priest, invented the 'Keller Machine' that made turning straight candy sticks into curved candy canes automatically! In 2005, Bob's Candies was bought by Farley and Sathers but they still make candy canes!
A story, that's rather nice but probably not true, says that German a choirmaster, in 1670, was worried about the children sitting quietly all through the long Christmas nativity service. So he gave them something to eat to keep them quiet! As he wanted to remind them of Christmas, he made them into a 'J' shape like a shepherds crook, to remind them of the shepherds that visited the baby Jesus at the first Christmas.
Sometimes other Christian meanings are giving to the parts of the canes. The 'J' can also mean Jesus. The white of the cane can represent the purity of Jesus Christ and the red stripes are for the blood he shed when he died on the cross. The peppermint flavor can represent the hyssop plant that was used for purifying in the Bible. However, all of these meanings were added to Candy Canes after they had become popular.

Want to Use a Bird Feeder?

Picture
Feeding birds in winter can be rewarding and enjoyable in the midst of chilly weather. During winter, approximately 35 species of birds may be seen at feeders across Pennsylvania.
Here are some tips to keep all your backyard birds happy and healthy this winter:
Pick the Right Seed -- If you want to attract a variety of species, try providing a variety of foods. Besides sunflower seeds, other popular seed types include white proso millet and peanuts, which attract blue jays, chickadees, titmice, and woodpeckers. Some commercial mixes contain filler items such as wheat, milo, hulled oats, rice, and rye seed that are not attractive to birds.
Keep it Clean -- Because natural food sources are scarcer in the winter, more birds may be attracted to backyard feeders, and those feeders will need to be cleaned and sterilized regularly. Proper cleaning will minimize mold, mildew, and other unhealthy conditions that could foster disease among backyard bird populations.
Quench Their Thirst -- Along with providing food for birds, it is a good idea to supply a source of water that birds can use for drinking and bathing. Heaters to keep the water from freezing are available at most hardware stores. Ideally, your birdbath should be placed near a tree with overhanging branches so that the birds have a place to sit and preen after bathing.
Minimize Window Strikes -- Windows can be a great hazard for birds, especially large windows that reflect the outdoors. Birds do not realize an obstruction is there and think they can fly right through it. Apply strips of tape or bird decals to the windows on the outside surface, or purchase bird netting to place over the window.
