Bakery Changes Veterans' Lives

From the outside, Dog Tag Bakery may seem like your typical pastry and coffee shop. But step inside and you'll quickly realize this Washington, D.C., cafe is offering more than a hot cup of joe. The bakery, located in D.C.'s Georgetown neighborhood, serves as a living business school for wounded veterans. Its mission is to help them navigate the often difficult transition into the civilian workforce. Dog Tag Inc. CEO Meghan Ogilvie told TODAY the program aims to "ignite the human spirit" in vets who feel disillusioned about what to do next once the service uniform comes off for good. "It's not just about a job or just about going back into education," Ogilvie said in an interview at the bakery recently. "It's really about helping our fellows to find purpose again and find a mission." Sharod Wade, a Marine veteran who graduated from the Dog Tag program in 2017, said the decision to leave the military fills many vets with uncertainty and confusion about their future. Job training resources and programs aren't always accessible, he said. "For so long, we just followed the orders of the nation," Wade told TODAY. "So now, I wake up one day and I get to do whatever it is I want to do. (You ask yourself), 'What is it that I like?' "You have to kind of find yourself all over again," he said. Dog Tag fellows, as they are known, work in the storefront bakery making coffee, serving pastries and working the register. But they also take courses like accounting and marketing to learn the nuts and bolts of running a small business. Public speaking is also a big part of the program, and blue chip firms like Deloitte offer workshops on resume writing and interviewing skills. Each fellowship lasts six months. At the conclusion, graduates get a certificate in business administration from Georgetown University's School of Continuing Studies. The bakery and fellowship program were founded in 2012 by Connie Milstein, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, and Rev. Rick Curry, a Jesuit priest at Georgetown. Milstein ran a bakery in Mount Kisco, New York, that employed women in need. Curry, who was born missing his right forearm, had dedicated his life to serving people with disabilities and was an avid bread maker and author of the cookbook "The Secrets of Jesuit Breadmaking." The two bonded over their passion for baking, as well as a yearning to serve the disabled veteran community. Dog Tag became their shared mission. (Curry died at 72 in 2015.) The pilot program started in June 2014 and included 10 fellows. The next one was in June 2015, and since then they've run the program back-to-back twice a year, with a graduation rate of around 90 percent. Fellows often go on to start their own businesses, land jobs with established companies or pursue further degrees. A few years before entering the Dog Tag program, Wade was homeless for a short time after he and his family were evicted from their Washington apartment. e now works in Mayor Muriel Bowser's Office of Veteran Affairs and has launched his own cleaning service company. Bethel Township has “free” Child ID Kits available at theirTownship Office if you would like to pick one up for your child, children, grandchild, grandchildren etc. They are valuable if, God forbid, a child ever goes missing. These Kits are useful for police in finding a missing child as they contain the child’s DNA, fingerprints, hair sample, dental records, etc. Please feel free to stop by and pick one or a few up. They are being distributed on a first come/first serve basis. If they run out and you would still like one or a few, reach out to John Bermingham, UMPT Supervisor Chairman and he will help you obtain as many as you need.

Divers recover U.S.S. Monitor turret 2002
On this day in 2002, the rusty iron gun turret of the U.S.S. Monitor broke from the water and into the daylight for the first time in 140 years. The ironclad warship was raised from the floor of the Atlantic, where it had rested since it went down in a storm off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, during the Civil War. Divers had been working for six weeks to bring it to the surface.
Nine months before sinking into its watery grave, the Monitor had been part of a revolution in naval warfare. On March 9, 1862, it dueled to a standstill with the C.S.S. Virginia (originally the C.S.S. Merrimack) in one of the most famous moments in naval history–the first time two ironclads faced each other in a naval engagement. During the battle, the two ships circled one another, jockeying for position as they fired their guns. The cannon balls simply deflected off the iron ships. In the early afternoon, the Virginia pulled back to Norfolk. Neither ship was seriously damaged, but the Monitor effectively ended the short reign of terror that the Confederate ironclad had brought to the Union navy.

The flat iron deck had a 20-foot cylindrical turret rising from the middle of the ship; the turret housed two 11-inch Dahlgren guns. Well summer has hit us in Roseto. We are pleased to announce our 2 week summer camp will take place from July 30 - August 10. The sessions will be Monday - Friday 9:00 - 12:00 at borough park. We will have a registration period on July 21st and July 28th from 9 - 11. This is a free camp for Roseto residents, $25.00 per child for non-residents. (Max $50) camp age is for 1st - 6th grade.

The Women’s Altar and Rosary Society of St. Rocco’s Catholic Church in Martins Creek have designed and pieced an “Inspirational Quilt”. With the guidance of Carol Smith and Antonette Rollo, the women were instructed as to the construction and steps necessary to accomplish the project. Blocks of spiritual sayings are combined with pieced sections to complete the work of art. The work sessions also proved to be a source of bonding and good will among the many women who assisted. The quilt will be chanced off at St. Rocco’s Annual Festival on August 9th, 10th, & 11th.

The Mass will include the Feast of the Assumption and the honoring of the Patron Saint of St. Roch. The Reverend Monsignor Vincent P. York, Pastor of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish, Pen Argyl, will be the Celebrant. This Annual Mass has been held at the closed church each August since 2015.
The liturgy and music for the August Mass will include reading and hymns. Attendees will also participate in reading the prayer to St. Roch. Former parishioners and all those who wish to fulfill their Holy Day Obligation to attend Mass on the Feast Day of the Assumption of our Lady may do so at the Mass at St. Roch’s in West Bangor.

Jacobsburg - Tuesday, August 21, 5:30-7:00 PM. Get moving after work with a brisk hike at Jacobsburg! These guided monthly hikes are 2 to 2.5 miles over uneven terrain. Dogs are welcome to hike on a leash. Meet at the Visitor Center flagpole at 400 Belfast Road. Registration is not required. Celebrating the creativity, heritage, and traditions of the seven Celtic nations, Celtic Cultural Alliance announces its annual Celtic Poetry Contest for writers of all ages. Original works for the poems should reflect the Celtic culture, arts, history or literature. Personal anecdotes of family memories or travelling experiences are also encouraged.
Poems must be original in any style or length with one author. The three brackets are: 3rd through 6th grades, 7th through 12th grades, and adult. The entries must be neatly written or typed. The top poets in each category will be given a certificate and small prize and will be invited to read their poems on the stage at Celtic Heritage Hollow on September 30, 2018.

A mobile paper shredding event is scheduled for September 15 from 9 am to 12 pm at Weona Park in Pen Argyl. This event is for Northampton County Residents only. No business or commercial shredding will be allowed. Accepted items are financial statements, medical records, investment transactions, employee payvstubs, Social Security or credit card numbers, pre-approved credit card applications, legal documents, tax forms, accounting files, cancelled checks, credit reward or bonus cards. No ring binders, plastic sheet protectors or coverings and no metal strips. DO NOT BRING junk mail, greeting cards, postcards, magazines, fliers, etc. These go in a recycling bin.

Celtic Cultural Alliance Announces Songwriting Competition
Celtic Cultural Alliance will be hosting a songwriting competition, sponsored by C.F. Martin & Co. and Sellersville Theatre, on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the Celtic Heritage Hollow Stage during the 31st Celtic Classic Highland Games and Festival. The contest is open to all amateur songwriters.
Original songs must have lyrics and be performed in person on the guitar. Songs will be judged on lyrics, melody and performance by professional musicians Graham Wright of the Glengarry Bhoys, Gerry Timlin and Seamus Kennedy. The contestant with the highest score will be awarded one Martin Guitar DRSG with case and strings along with the opportunity to audition as the opening act for a performance at the Sellersville Theatre.
Contestants must send in a registration with the lyrics, and it must be postmarked by September 1, 2018. The contest is limited to the first 15 applicants with a correct registration. For more information and a registration form, please visit http://www.celticfest.org/celtic_song_writing_contest.
