Normandy 75th Anniversary
The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic program on Thursday, September 12th @ 7:00 PM. Russell Stout and Richard Freeman will do a presentation on their recent trip to Normandy, France in celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy. The program will also include their visit to the site of The Battle of the Bulge. Come and enjoy the history of the event in addition to the emotional impact ¾ of a century later. 45th Annual Harvest Festival will be Hosted by Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm 10:00am October 12 and 13. Come enjoy harvest time on the farm. Learn about heritage crafts and traditional skills such as spinning, weaving, broom making, scrapple making, apple butter making, basket making and candle making. There will also be plenty of folk entertainment, good country food made by hand, children’s activities, pumpkin decorating, a quilt raffle, pony rides, horse drawn wagon rides, one room schoolhouse presentations, outdoor brick bake oven and much more. The 2019 theme, TBA. A special children’s area will offer hands-on opportunities for the young folk to try old fashion crafts and activities. Halloween Parade Sign-ups
Bangor Lodge #1106 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is pleased to announce the 2019 edition of the Bangor Elks Halloween Parade in the Borough of Bangor. The parade is scheduled to take place Thursday October 17, 2019 at 7:00 PM with no rain date. The parade theme for 2019 will be “A Mardi Gras Halloween”. Individuals and groups wishing to participate in the parade, can sign up online for free online at https://forms.gle/XLfNWpgjPKyHK1hG9 or by visiting the lodge home page and clicking on the parade link. It will be necessary to include an email address for registration for further communications and on the parade. Online registration will be available until October 12, 2019. The parade route will be the same as last year. Starting at Pennsylvania Ave (Near The Beehive/Merchants Bank) and then moving right onto N Main St past the CVS Pharmacy then making a right onto Broadway and ending at the Elks Lodge. Are you interested in learning more about quilting or joining monthly with others who have a common interest in quilting? If yes, consider membership in the Heart In Hand Quilt Guild. Monthly meetings, programs and workshops help members to learn new skills, encourage each other, and meet with others interested in quilting. Members also make community service items for mastectomy patients at local hospitals. The Guild meets monthly at the Hope United Church of Christ, Wind Gap the second Thursday evening of each month from 7-8:30 PM. The Pen Argyl and Bangor cheerleaders are reselling yard signs to commemorate the 100th game that will be held October 26. This will be their final sale of the yard signs. The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking for the public’s help to track the state’s growing bald eagle population. After reaching a low of just three nesting bald eagle pairs in the Commonwealth in the early 1980s, officials now estimate there are more than 300 nesting pairs here.
While bald eagles are no longer listed as a threatened species in Pennsylvania, they are still protected by the U.S. Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits taking of the birds, nests or eggs. Property Tax/Rent Rebate program Older adults and Pennsylvanians with disabilities have until December 31 to apply for the state’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate program. The original deadline was June 30. The program benefits people age 65 or older, widows and widowers age 50 or older, and the disabled 18 or older. The income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 for renters, and half of Social Security income excluded. The maximum standard rebate is $650. Supplemental rebates for certain qualifying homeowners boosts rebates to $975. After June 30, rebates will be distributed as claims are received and processed. Located in downtown Bangor, Dinky’s Ice Cream Parlor is known for its 24 Flavors of Soft Ice Cream, the Quarry Bucket Challenge, and the pictures of customers that line every wall. It has been called a “Pillar of the Community” on Facebook and the Dinky’s are excited to open their second location in the near future. Dinky’s second location will open in Bethlehem on East Third Street in October/November of this year. Mrs. Matthews said the up-and-coming area was the perfect place, though they discovered it on accident. After coming home from an ice cream show, the pair decided to take a different route home. They stumbled upon what will soon be the new Dinky’s, and the next day a call was made to get the ball rolling. The two are anxious for the opening, and say if it could be open now, it would be. “We’re ready to Rock,” said Mrs. Matthews. Ever since Norman Matthews was young, he wanted to open an ice cream shop. Now, he’s living his dream - serving ice cream, working in the kitchen, and creating his commercials for the parlor. Along with his wife, the two do as much for the community as possible and attend many events. “She’s my biggest supporter and motivator,” said Mr. Matthews. “She’s the biggest fan of Dinky’s.” They attend events such as the Car Show (their favorite) and will be at the games in the area, among other events, and hold events at their shop. The Quarry Bucket Challenge’s name was inspired by the Slate Belt, and is definitely a challenge to conquer. With 12 scoops of ice cream, 3 liquid toppings, 2 bananas, 1 candy topping, a cherry, and only 30 mins to finish, only 2 people have been victorious and winners of a T-shirt and a spot on the winner’s wall. Don’t worry though, if your picture isn’t on the wall for the Quarry Bucket, you may be on one of the others. The new Dinky’s location will feature a bigger area with more menu items as well as new ice cream flavors. From more burgers, to four vegan flavors of ice cream, the menu will only get better from here. The Matthews have nothing but nothing but praise for community and employees and can’t wait to expand even further. “If the next one does as good as it’s supposed to, we will open more stores.” They say. “I want it franchised. Seed Saving Workshop Seed Saving Workshop Hosted by Community Supported Garden at Genesis Farm will be held Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 9 AM – 12 PM at 41 Silver Lake Rd, # B, Blairstown, New Jersey 07825 They will spend the time collecting seed from the field, processing kale seed, tomato seed, onion seed, flowers and garlic to name a few. The seed you collect, clean and process will be saved for their 2020 season. There will be plenty of time for discussion. October 12 Masonic Motorama The Seventh Annual Masonic Motorama, presented By Portland Lodge No.311, will be held Saturday, October 12, from 8 AM – 11 PM at Plainfield Farmers Fair. The event is open to anything with a motor! Come see a car/truck show, a monster truck, truck and tractor pulls, food, games, and vendors. Cost is Adults $9.00, children age 5 to 10 $5.00. Children under the age of 5 are free. October 15 DiscoverE: Tales for Tots Tuesday October 15 at 10:00am to 11:00am and 1:00pm to 2:00pm at Jacobsburg Park. October 17 Bangor Halloween Parade Bangor Lodge #1106 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is pleased to announce the 2019 edition of the Bangor Elks Halloween Parade in the Borough of Bangor. The parade is scheduled to take place Thursday October 17, 2019 at 7:00 PM with no rain date. The parade theme for 2019 will be “A Mardi Gras Halloween.” Individuals and groups wishing to participate in the parade can sign up online for free at https://forms.gle/XLfNWpgjPKyHK1hG9 or by visiting the lodge home page and clicking on the parade link. It is necessary to include an email address for registration for further communications and on the parade. Registration will be available until October 10, 2019. The parade route will be the same as last year. Line up will be at the Merchants Bank, Beehive, and Route 191 areas. After the parade, the Bangor Lodge will once again host free hot dogs and soda at the lodge for the parade participants. Further information on the parade will be released in the coming weeks. Bach Choir Concert: Welcome to Westminster Abbey The Bach Choir of Bethlehem welcomes Canada’s Theatre of Early Music as their Gala artist to present the American premiere of the Coronation of King George II on Saturday, October 26 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Allentown. The ensemble is led by Danny Taylor, frequent Bach soloist and a much in-demand countertenor. In creating the coronation, Taylor and his musicians deliver orchestral and choral excellence that includes Renaissance to Baroque to present-day compositions.
