FLASH FLOOD WATCH THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING
The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Flash Flood Watch for the Slate Belt, Berks County, the Lehigh Valley and southern Poconos from 2 PM EDT this afternoon through this evening. Showers and thunderstorms containing heavy downpours are expected to develop this afternoon. This activity may become better organized toward early evening and then weaken eventually late in the evening. While rainfall amounts area wide will generally average under one inch, locally heavy rainfall of 2 to 3 inches is possible where thunderstorms move over the same location. Heavy rainfall within a short period of time can lead to rapidly rising water and flash flooding, particularly in urban areas, along small creeks and streams as the ground is already very saturated due to recent heavy rains over the past two weeks. There is a potential for an additional round of locally heavy rainfall and flash flooding on Friday.
Delaware River Safety Advisory
Delaware River Safety Advisory for August 3-6: The Delaware River is expected to hit the mandatory life jacket threshold of 8’ at the Montague gauge by 2 pm today (Friday, 8/3). Once it hits that mark, wearing a properly-fitted, US Coast Guard-approved life jacket is mandatory at all times for all Delaware River boaters, including paddlers. Swimming is also prohibited due to increased hazards from high water. The river is expected to continue to rise with the current crest predicted at just under 11’ on Saturday afternoon. (Far below flood stage) That is 5-6 vertical feet higher than average for this time of year. It will remain above 8’ through the weekend. Hazards include swifter and stronger currents, colder water temperature, increased debris, reduced visibility, and submerged obstacles, particularly along the shorelines. Monitor river levels at: https://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=bgm&gage=mtgn4

Health Advisory......

West Nile Virus Alert

Picture
The recent rain is a reminder that standing and stagnant water is a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes and potentially West Nile Virus (WNV).
Please remember to empty or dispose of water-holding containers that have collected on your property.
According to Pennsylvania’s West Nile Virus Control Program, Northampton County has eight total positive tests for WNV among the nearly 400 mosquitoes that have been collected.

In 2000, West Nile virus appeared for the first time in Pennsylvania in birds, mosquitoes and a horse. To combat the spread of West Nile virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, Pennsylvania has developed a comprehensive network. This network, which covers 40 counties, includes trapping mosquitoes, collecting dead birds and monitoring horses, people and, in past years, sentinel chickens.
State DEP and county mosquito control professionals have been using Bti, a naturally occurring bacteria to kill mosquito larvae for year.  This material is now becoming widely available for you to buy and use yourself at home.
Bti can be purchased in small, donut-shaped form, often called "mosquito dunks",  which are useful in small areas of  standing water, sch as a birdbath or small puddle of water that may gather in a low spot on your property.  A granular form of Bti is available, and effective for larger areas, such as backyard ponds.
Bti can be purchased in many lawn and garden, outdoor supply, and home improvement stores.  The great thing about this bacteria is that it kills only mosquito and black fly larvae.  It is not harmful to people, pets, aquatic life (such as fish) or plants.
The best way to control mosquitoes is still to get rid of standing water on your property.  And, make sure you follow all label instructions carefully if you use Bti at home.

Do's and Don'ts to Reduce Cancer Risk
Be Physically Active

Picture

Be physically active. Research shows active people have a lower risk of developing colon and breast cancers than people who don't exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. You don't need to be a super-athlete to get the benefits of exercise. Activities such as brisk walking, biking, dancing or any exercise that raises your heart rate and makes you sweat is beneficial.

Cowboy rides horse into West Texas bar

Picture
(UPI) -  A surprised customer at Texas bar captured video of a fellow patron riding his horse through the front door into the facility.   Daisy Glaspie tweeted a video showing the man, clad in a cowboy hat, riding his horse into a bar in Lubbock's Depot District.
"There was this huge group of people there outside and they said someone's about to bring a horse into the bar," Glaspie told EverythingLubbock.com. "I asked, 'Is that even allowed?'"
"We stayed there for five minutes and they were like, 'We're waiting for this police officer to leave,' and I was like, 'I thought this was legal,'" Glaspie said.
Police said it is up to business owners to determine whether to allow horses inside their facilities, but the rider and the business owners could be liable for any resulting damage or injuries.

Preventing Double Taxation
Legislation to prevent the state from collecting double taxes from mobile telecommunications consumers is now law.
Act 52 of 2018 excludes the sales of telephones, telephone handsets, modems, tablets and related accessories, including cases, chargers, holsters, clips, hands-free devices, screen protectors and batteries, from being subject to the Gross Receipts Tax. Those devices are already subject to the 6 percent Sales and Use Tax.
The change is needed because the Commonwealth had not updated its definition of mobile telecommunication since 2002. During the last 16 years, communications technology has advanced, causing uncertainty about which tax better fits.
The new law clarifies the definition of what is subject to the Gross Receipts Tax and is subject to the Sales and Use Tax. Updating these definitions further protects consumers from bureaucratic overreach.

Empowering Consumers w/Prescription Pricing Info
To help give patients more information regarding the costs and prices for prescription drugs, the House approved legislation this spring to protect consumers and independent pharmacies from unfair drug prices and reimbursement rates.
Some pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) have been cutting reimbursements to community pharmacies for medications sold to patients on Medicaid. This practice has led to substantial financial difficulties for community pharmacies, which are typically locally owned family businesses. House Bill 2212 would remedy the problem by preventing PBMs from cutting reimbursements to community pharmacies for medications sold to patients on Medicaid.
Also, when PBMs contract with pharmacies, the documents may at times contain what is referred to as a “gag clause,” which prohibits pharmacists from disclosing information to a customer that could reduce their out-of-pocket costs for medications. House Bill 2211 addresses those situations by allowing pharmacists to disclose drug information, allowing consumers to get the best price for their medications.
Both bills are now in the state Senate for review.

Book Review
"Infidel" book by Ayaan Hirsi Ali review by Katy Albanese
Ayaan Hirsi Ali was born in 1969 in Mogadishu, Somalia. And so began her life as a little girl in a Muslim society. Her autobiography recounts the
many ways that girls and women are subjugated by men who follow the teachings of Muhammad and the religion of Islam.
In an Islamic society, females are valuable only in their ability to bear children and to be of service to their husbands. They are circumcised when
they are little girls, beaten by husbands, brothers, or any other men in the community, for any infraction. They cannot go outside the house without completely covering hemselves with a hijab.  They have no voice, no vote, no rights.
Ayaan was a faithful follower of Islam, following all the rules. She was an avid reader and  began to have doubts about what was written in the Koran. When the attacks of 9-11 occurred, she saw the cracks in the philosophy supported by the Muslim Brotherhood.
When her father arranged a marriage with a man she had never met, Ayaan sought a way of escape. En route to meet her new husband, she made a plan
to hide from her family and start a new life. She took a flight to Germany, then sought asylum in Holland.  There she got a job, attended college, wrote
books on the evils of Islam and was elected to Parliament.
Now, Ayaan lives with her husband and son in the United States, surrounded by bodyguards because of her outspoken criticism of the oppression
suffered by Muslim women.
This book opened my eyes to the true nature of  Islam, told by one who understands the religion. Read this account and become informed.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - August 3

Nautilus travels under North Pole  1958

On August 3, 1958, the U.S. nuclear submarine Nautilus accomplishes the first undersea voyage to the geographic North Pole. The world’s first nuclear submarine, the Nautilus dived at Point Barrow, Alaska, and traveled nearly 1,000 miles under the Arctic ice cap to reach the top of the world. It then steamed on to Iceland, pioneering a new and shorter route from the Pacific to the Atlantic and Europe.
The USS Nautilus was constructed under the direction of U.S. Navy Captain Hyman G. Rickover, a brilliant Russian-born engineer who joined the U.S. atomic program in 1946. In 1947, he was put in charge of the navy’s nuclear-propulsion program and began work on an atomic submarine. Regarded as a fanatic by his detractors, Rickover succeeded in developing and delivering the world’s first nuclear submarine years ahead of schedule. In 1952, the Nautilus’keel was laid by President Harry S. Truman, and on January 21, 1954, first lady Mamie Eisenhower broke a bottle of champagne across its bow as it was launched into the Thames River at Groton, Connecticut. Commissioned on September 30, 1954, it first ran under nuclear power on the morning of January 17, 1955.
Much larger than the diesel-electric submarines that preceded it, the Nautilusstretched 319 feet and displaced 3,180 tons. It could remain submerged for almost unlimited periods because its atomic engine needed no air and only a very small quantity of nuclear fuel. The uranium-powered nuclear reactor produced steam that drove propulsion turbines, allowing the Nautilus to travel underwater at speeds in excess of 20 knots.
