BAHS Band Powers through Parent Preview

Every year the Bangor Area High School Slater Marching Band performs for parents before their field show is performed for the public.
Although there was limited time, students say that preview night is always beneficial for their future performances, as well as for the community.
“Preview night is especially important this year since the band has been moved from their normal practice field to the parking lot in front of the school,” said Drum Major Andrew Bunn. “This preview night was the first time our show was performed on an actual football field, and on top of that was the first time all of our first-year members performed on a field at all. Preview night [also] helps to calm any anxieties that come with the first performance of the season.”
Although dark clouds loomed overhead prior to the performance, spectators lined the field with blankets and chairs to support the band.
“I think the community likes preview night because they get a chance to see how we rehearse, warm up, and they get a personal run-through of the show,” said Drum Major Andrea Morokutti. “Preview night shows them how much the students work on drill, marching, and music.”
Bunn echoed this, saying, “I think one of the major reasons people enjoy coming to preview night has to be that they get to interact with the band in a much more casual and personal way. Typically when we perform at a competition or football game, we are strictly on display, and as such are unable to interact much with our audience. That all changes during preview night. The ability to observe the inner workings of our rehearsals as well as have some of our show's concepts explained to you directly is something truly unique.”

“This year's field show contains some of the coolest music I've ever heard the band play as a part of a half time performance ever,” said Bunn. “The dramatic themes, emotional phrases, and captivating color guard routine to accompany them gives this season the potential to be the best in our band's history. But of course, words can only do so much to describe it, the best way to experience the show is to come see it yourself!”
This year, the band hopes to receive a score of 90 or higher at their upcoming competitions. “This year’s show is going to showcase all the hard work that has ever been put into the marching band program,” said senior Steffani Smith. “I truly believe that this is the year that Bangor will receive a 90 in competition.”

Stop the Bleed Training Course

A Stop The Bleed training course hosted by Suburban EMS will be held Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church 2445 Lake Minsi Dr, Bangor September 14 at 9am
Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign and call-to-action. This DoD funded training course is designed to train the public to react to a bleeding emergency and provide aid until emergency personnel arrive.

Halloween Parade Sign-ups
Bangor Lodge #1106 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is pleased to announce the 2019 edition of the Bangor Elks Halloween Parade in the Borough of Bangor. The parade is scheduled to take place Thursday October 17, 2019 at 7:00 PM with no rain date.
The parade theme for 2019 will be “A Mardi Gras Halloween”.
Individuals and groups wishing to participate in the parade, can sign up online for free online at https://forms.gle/XLfNWpgjPKyHK1hG9 or by visiting the lodge home page and clicking on the parade link. It will be necessary to include an email address for registration for further communications and on the parade. Online registration will be available until October 12, 2019.
The parade route will be the same as last year. Starting at Pennsylvania Ave (Near The Beehive/Merchants Bank) and then moving right onto N Main St past the CVS Pharmacy then making a right onto Broadway and ending at the Elks Lodge.
After the parade, the Bangor Lodge will once again host free hot dogs and soda at the lodge for the parade participants. Questions, comments, or concerns can be sent to bangorelksparade@gmail.com.

Quilt Guild Accepting New Members
Are you interested in learning more about quilting or joining monthly with others who have a common interest in quilting? If yes, consider membership in the Heart In Hand Quilt Guild.
Monthly meetings, programs and workshops help members to learn new skills, encourage each other, and meet with others interested in quilting. Members also make community service items for mastectomy patients at local hospitals.
The Guild meets monthly at the Hope United Church of Christ, Wind Gap the second Thursday evening of each month from 7-8:30 PM. Our central location works well for members from the Slatebelt, Pocono’s, and Lehigh Valley areas. Membership is open to anyone over the age of 18. The program year starts in September and ends in August. Enrollment is currently open for new members. Annual dues costs $35. Banquet Ticket sales begin August 5, cost is $60.00. They have 300 printed "commemorative" tickets. Each school will receive 150 for teams, administration, Board of Education, and special guests. There will be 450 seats for public sale.
Game Ticket pre-sale (for parents of players / participants, season ticket holders) will be available from August 19 -25. They will have a code to be used during this time period.

Rivalry Game Yard Signs
The Pen Argyl and Bangor cheerleaders are reselling yard signs to commemorate the 100th game that will be held October 26.
This will be their final sale of the yard signs. If you are interested in purchasing a sign it can be ordered at DKA unlimited in Pen Argyl. You can also order online at www.dkaunlimited.com and choose “local”.
The signs are $20 and will be personalized on the back for the team you choose! All orders are due by September 14th. All signs must be picked up on delivery day between 3 and 5 pm at DKA unlimited on September 25th.

Help Track Bald Eagle Population

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking for the public’s help to track the state’s growing bald eagle population. After reaching a low of just three nesting bald eagle pairs in the Commonwealth in the early 1980s, officials now estimate there are more than 300 nesting pairs here.
While bald eagles are no longer listed as a threatened species in Pennsylvania, they are still protected by the U.S. Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits taking of the birds, nests or eggs. If you spot a bald eagle nest, please use proper etiquette to avoid disturbing the birds.

Property Tax/Rent Rebate program
Older adults and Pennsylvanians with disabilities have until December 31 to apply for the state’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate program. The original deadline was June 30.
The program benefits people age 65 or older, widows and widowers age 50 or older, and the disabled 18 or older. The income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 for renters, and half of Social Security income excluded. The maximum standard rebate is $650. Supplemental rebates for certain qualifying homeowners boosts rebates to $975.
After June 30, rebates will be distributed as claims are received and processed. Applications typically take 6-8 weeks to process.

DCNR Fights Spotted Lantern Fly

As Pennsylvanians grow more aware of the seriousness of the ecological threat posed by the invasive Spotted Lanternfly, the Pennsylvania DCNR is taking some steps to help respond.
DCNR’s Bureau of Forestry is serving in a supportive, collaborative fashion, leveraging resources and skills related to forestry work to help in the fight against this invasive pest.
The Division of Forest Health within DCNR’s Bureau of Forestry routinely performs aerial surveys of Pennsylvania’s forests (PDF), checking for tree dieback, mortality, defoliation, and foliage discoloration.
The Division of Forest Health used traditional aerial surveying methods to generate an Ailanthus (Tree of Heaven) map. Ailanthus, happens to be a preferred food and host in the life cycle of the Spotted Lanternfly.
If we know the location of colonies of Tree of Heaven, then theoretically, we should be able to find colonies of Spotted Lanternfly and contain them – helping to reduce their impact.
Tree of heaven has a distinctive look from the air. Female Ailanthus trees form heavy clusters of whitish seeds, highly visible from above, mostly concentrated at this time in southeastern Pennsylvania.
A complete inventory will enable a swifter, more effective response if/when the Spotted Lanternfly arrives in counties to the north and west of this invasive insect’s range. Pennsylvania has 20 state forest districts.

Preserving PA’s Agricultural Traditions

Supporting our state’s top industry was a focus this June, as the General Assembly passed a series of bills to help carry on our agriculture traditions for future generations and boost the struggling dairy industry.
Pennsylvania is home to 6,650 dairy farms, which contribute $14.7 billion in economic revenue annually and support more than 52,000 jobs; however, the dairy industry as a whole is struggling, and farms are going out of business at an alarming pace.
Act 38 of 2019 created the Dairy Investment Program to drive out financial support for strategic projects that will help stabilize and grow the industry.
The program will have specific guidelines for evaluating and approving grant applications to ensure the funding is targeted to the most appropriate projects. This fiscal year, the program will receive $5 million in the state budget to issue grants to support the state’s dairy sector.
This new law was one of several within the Growing PA Agriculture package. Other new laws will ensure a quick state-level response to threats to livestock or crops such as African swine fever and spotted lanternfly; establish a Pennsylvania Agricultural Business Development Center to help farmers create a business plan, transition plan or succession plan; enhance youth exposure to opportunities in the agriculture industry; boost enrollment in the veteran farmer Homegrown by Heroes program; provide specialty crop block grants; and more.

Improving Safety in Our Schools

Our schools should be among the safest places for students anywhere. This summer, the House continued its efforts to make our classrooms safer by enacting new state laws to boost already-in-place initiatives.
Last year, a $60 million block grant program was included in the 2018-19 state budget that allows school districts to secure funding annually for safety and security enhancements to meet their own specific needs. Every district that applied, including all the school districts in the 137th District, received at least $25,000.
The funding can go toward the hiring of school police officers, school resource officers, counselors and/or mental health counselors; alternative education and diversion programs; violence prevention initiatives; school safety and emergency preparedness plans; or physical upgrades to school buildings and equipment to improve safety.
In this year’s state budget, we altered the program so schools can now receive a base grant between $30,000 and $45,000, depending on their average daily attendance.
We also made improvements to the program that established a tip line for students, teachers and residents to anonymously report any unsafe, potentially harmful, dangerous, violent or criminal activities in schools. The Safe2Say Something tip line is staffed by trained professionals who can appropriately respond to the situation and provide the caller peace of mind that their concern will be addressed. The system received 23,494 tips, with most focused on students struggling with mental health issues. Individuals can reach the tip line at 1-844-SAF2SAY or online at www.safe2saypa.org.
Our work isn’t done, but these are important steps forward to improve the safety and security of our schools.

Brookel Sabella Contestant

Bangor Area High School senior, Brookel Sabella, will be a contestant at this years “The Lehigh Valley Sings” event. The showcase features ten contestants from the area that will display their voices on the RCN Farmarama Theater Stage at the Great Allentown Fair.
Brookel Sabella is a rising senior and has been very vocal in the creative arts at Bangor Area High School (BAHS). She played “Donna Sheridan” in BAHS’s musical Mamma Mia last year, where she received three Freddy Awards for her performance, and has been involved in District, Region, All State, and All-Eastern choir. She was also chosen to participate in the 2019 All-National Choir in November.
Sabella will compete among other performers for the winning spot in the Lehigh Valley Sings competition. To audition, she submitted a video from Broadway Night where she sang “Nobody’s Side.”
After hearing about the event on the radio, Sabella said it “sounded like a lot of fun and a good way to get my name out there.” She is excited for the show and to do something different. “I’m mostly excited to show people a more fun side of me and to just be involved in it,” she said. “It’s a great way to get used to the audience and learn how to calm my nerves.”
The Lehigh Valley Sings will be held on August 28th at 8:00pm. Audience members will be able to vote for their favorite contestant.

Blue Mt. Libary Summer Reading

The Blue Mt. Community Library wrapped up the "SUMMER FUN WITH BOOKS" program at Weona Park with 30 Children and adults, who enjoyed learning about parks and carnivals with stories, a ride on the Historic Dentzel Carousel and a picnic under the pavilion. The Summer Program was a fun learning experience and a great success! The library is already thinking about what themes to do next summer.

Property Tax Update

As a former legislative staff member and nearly five-term member of the Legislature, Rep. Marcia Hahn been on the front lines of the property tax debate. For that reason, she has been appointed to serve on the School Property Tax Working Group that met recently for the second time.
This is a very complex issue that in some ways is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to funding education in Pennsylvania. We are looking not only at possibly reducing or even eliminating school property taxes, but also the cost drivers that impact any piece of legislation we would put forward and effect its sustainability for future generations.
There are eight pieces of school property tax legislation that have been introduced in the House and Senate, including Hahn's House Bill 1200. The working group is evaluating the merits of each one of them.
While the understood goal obviously is providing relief for taxpayers, their objective as an appointed group of legislators is to discover which bill or combination of bills has the best chance to garner 102 votes in the House, 26 Senate votes and the signature of the governor. Nothing gets done if a piece of legislation can’t accomplish that.
Over the years, I’ve heard many constituents say they simply want school property taxes eliminated. Doing so would mean having to come up with a stable source of revenue that will generate more than $8.5 billion annually, and that figure increases each fiscal year.
The ideal situation would be to find that funding source, in addition to a way to reduce the price tag for education. Accomplishing that would serve as even greater stewardship of taxpayer dollars.

Marsy’s Law for Crime Victims’ Rights

Crime Victims’ Rights could soon become an amendment to the Pennsylvania State Constitution through Marsy’s law.
   Madison Scarfaro, the Field Director for Marsy’s Law for PA, and Jennifer Riley, the State Director for Marsy’s Law for PA, work to spread awareness of Marsy’s Law throughout the Slate Belt by tabling, speaking at events, networking, and using social media. They work with crime victims and survivors, advocates, law enforcement, district attorneys, and other supporters across Pennsylvania to see that the law is enacted in the Commonwealth.
According to Scarfaro, Marsy’s Law is “a nationwide effort that is currently being worked on in Pennsylvania.” It is “working to take the statutory rights that crime victims’ currently have in Pennsylvania and elevate them to be included in the state Constitution.”
Riley says, “under current Pennsylvania law, those who are accused of crimes have constitutionally protected rights, while the victims of crime do not. Marsy’s Law is working to change that. It aims to elevate the rights of crime victims to the state’s Constitution, which would ensure that victims have rights that are equal to the accused and convicted – including a right to privacy, a right to be notified of court proceedings, a right to be heard, and more.”
Marsy’s Law has made much progress in the legislature over the past two years. Riley said that during the 2017-18 legislative session, that House Bill 276 for Marsy’s Law passed unanimously in both the State Senate and House. This was crucial to amend the state constitution. It must pass in two consecutive sessions before being placed on the ballot as a referendum for voter approval. The focus now is convincing voters to support the referendum.
Both women, among others involved with Marsy’s Law, are supportive and engaged with their efforts to educate the community on the law’s importance.
    “I have always been interested and involved in politics, coming from a family who was as well,” said Scarfaro. “When I was told about the position becoming available for Marsy’s Law for PA, I instantly knew that this would be the perfect job for me. With this, I am very passionate about ensuring that victims of crime are treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve. Marsy’s Law is working to make sure that this happens, and I am honored to work for such a great effort.”
     Anyone can get involved such as signing the petition online (or at an event in person), signing an endorsement form, getting the word out, becoming a community ambassador, and inviting Marsy’s Law to local events. Celtic Poetry Contest

BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania, August 14, 2019 — Celebrating the creativity, heritage, and traditions of the seven Celtic nations, Celtic Cultural Alliance announces the annual Celtic Poetry Contest for writers of all ages. Original works for the poems should reflect the Celtic culture, arts, history or literature. Personal anecdotes of family memories or travelling experiences are also encouraged.
Poems must be original in any style or length with one author. The three brackets are: 3rd through 6th grades, 7th through 12th grades, and adult. The entries must be neatly written or typed. The top poets in each category will be given a certificate and small prize and will be invited to read their poems on the stage at Celtic Heritage Hollow on September 30, 2019.

We can make direct over-the-air radio transmissions from a 12-volt source even if the home power is out, by using a generator, or vehicle battery.
The Delaware-Lehigh Amateur Radio Club will help you prepare for your FCC test to earn your entry-level amateur radio license and begin the enjoyment of ham radio.
Additionally, for amateur radio operators already holding a Technician Class license, classes will be held on the same dates to prepare you for the General Class license on the same schedule.
Both series of free classes will start on Tuesday, September 3, and run for 9 Tuesday evenings, 7 pm to 9 pm, at Gracedale, near Nazareth. If you are within the age range of about 8 to 80+, and have an interest in amateur radio, you qualify!

A different guest will hike with us each month, sharing a topic that they specialize in. We will hike at a brisk pace over uneven terrain for 2 to 2.5 miles guided by a center educator. Our guest will be available during the hike to discuss the topic of the day and answer your questions. A Pig Roast hosted by Mount Bethel Vol. Fire Company is set for Saturday, September 14 from 3 PM – 10 PM at 2341 N Delaware Drive, Mount Bethel.

Stop the Bleed
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Johnsonville will be hosting a STOP THE BLEED campaign on September 14th at 9 AM. This is a federally funded program with no cost to participants. Chad Oliver from Suburban EMS will be leading the training.
Bystanders are usually first on the scene of an accident until emergency responders arrive. The STOP THE BLEED program is aimed to train bystanders to help in bleeding situations.
  Did you know that a person can bleed to death in five minutes? This program will provide skills that could save someone’s life.

Seed Saving Workshop
Seed Saving Workshop Hosted by Community Supported Garden at Genesis Farm will be held Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 9 AM – 12 PM at 41 Silver Lake Rd, # B, Blairstown, New Jersey 07825
They will spend the time collecting seed from the field, processing kale seed, tomato seed, onion seed, flowers and garlic to name a few. The seed you collect, clean and process will be saved for their 2020 season. There will be plenty of time for discussion. You will leave with enthusiasm and confidence to practice seed saving on your own. Plus a sample of the seeds you collect. No experience necessary!

Birding for Scouts
Birding for Scouts at Jacobsburg will be held Sunday, September 14 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am. It introduces scouts to the world of birding and helps them to meet requirements for badges. Scouts should dress for the weather and bring binoculars if they have them. Binoculars will be provided for those who need them. Registration is required.

Monarch Tagging
Join local butterfly enthusiast Doug Burton Sunday, September 14 from 1 to 3 pm at Jacobsburg as he captures and tags Monarch Butterflies heading to Mexico for the winter. Butterfly nets will be on hand for those who wish to assist Doug in capturing these beautiful insects. Registration is required.

The 512 Fall Cruise is planned for Wind Gap Chevrolet-Buick (Route 512 - just off Rt 33) Sunday, September 15 (Rain or Shine) 9am-2pm. There will be a 50/50 raffle, a DJ Spinning the Tunes, and free refreshments. The top 3 entries receive “Dealer’s Choice ” Trophies.

Young at Heart to Meet
  The Slate Belt Young at Heart Club will be meeting on Thursday, September 19 at 1:00 PM in the church hall of St. Elizabeth's in Pen Argyl. An officer, with his canine companion, from the Bushkill Township Police Department will provide our program. He will show and explain the workings of these wonderful dogs with the police. Also, a correction - Walter Cole provied our program of the 100 Years of Football Rivalry between Bangor and Pen Argyl on Thursday, August 15. At several requests, we will have Mr. Cole come back again when he has collected more data. Thanks to Mr. Cole for such an interesting part of local history. The second Annual Delaware Water Gap Blazin 5k Run/Walk will be run Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 9 AM at the Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge 2138 Croasdale Rd, Stroudsburg, PA (formerly Cherry Valley Golf Course). Early registration is $30 until August 18th that will guarantee you a shirt. After the 18th price is $35 and shirts are not guarantee. 1st, 2nd, 3rd place medals will be awarded to the top male/female in each age group with a top male/female overall. Celtic Cultural Competitions
The Celtic Cultural Alliance is hosting several competitions celebrating Celtic music and poetry at Celtic Classic Highland Games and Festival this year. The competitions’ goal is to showcase and celebrate the local talent in songwriting, youth Celtic fiddle playing, and creativity in poetry.

The Celtic Songwriting Competition, sponsored by C.F. Martin & Co. and Sellersville Theatre, will be held on Saturday, September 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Celtic Heritage Hollow Stage during the 32nd Celtic Classic Highland Games and Festival. The amateur songwriter with the highest score will be awarded one Martin Guitar DRSG Jr. along with the opportunity to audition as the opening act for a performance at the Sellersville Theatre. The contest is limited to the first 15 applicants with a correct registration.
The Youth Fiddle Competition will be held on September 28 at the Charlie Brown Ice House, Bethlehem, for students under the age of 18. This unique fiddle contest primarily focuses on Celtic fiddling styles including Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton, Shetland, and Galician. Cash prizes are awarded.
The Celtic Poetry contest is open for writers of all ages. Original works for the poems should reflect the Celtic culture, arts, history, or literature. Personal anecdotes of family memories or traveling experiences are also encouraged.

Saturday, September 28 at 2:30pm to 4:30pm at Jacobsburg Park.  The tell-tale signs of autumn are all around as the summer winds down. Join us as we search for wildflowers, changing leaves, migrating birds and other signs of the changing season. Be prepared for a moderate hike that may involve muddy slopes and uphill climbs. Please bring binoculars, a camera, water and a snack, and wear sturdy shoes. Registration is required.

Celestial Wildlife
Saturday, September 28 at 7:30pm to 9:00pm at Jacobsburg Park.  Did you know that the night sky is filled with all sorts of wildlife? Join us for this nighttime adventure as we use our imagination and search the sky for bears, swans, eagles, dolphins and even dragons! Please dress warmly and wear sturdy shoes. Bring a blanket to sit on, a flashlight, water, a snack, and binoculars if you have them. Please note that the park will not provide telescopes at this program. Slate Belt Rising will be hosting The Slate Belt BASH & ROAD RALLY Scavenger Hunt on Sunday, September 29th at Weona Park. The road rally scavenger hunt will be held from 9am-12pm with cash prizes for first place ($1,000.00 - YES! 1k) through third place finishers.
All you Slate Belt navigators and experts be ready to show off your Slate Belt Truth! The Road Rally course will wind through 10 municipalities with challenges to find obscure quirky landmarks and will end with a bonus round of Slate Belt history & facts. Bangor Halloween Parade
Bangor Lodge #1106 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is pleased to announce the 2019 edition of the Bangor Elks Halloween Parade in the Borough of Bangor. The parade is scheduled to take place Thursday October 17, 2019 at 7:00 PM with no rain date. The parade theme for 2019 will be “A Mardi Gras Halloween.”
Individuals and groups wishing to participate in the parade can sign up online for free at https://forms.gle/XLfNWpgjPKyHK1hG9 or by visiting the lodge home page and clicking on the parade link. It is necessary to include an email address for registration for further communications and on the parade. Registration will be available until October 10, 2019.
The parade route will be the same as last year. Line up will be at the Merchants Bank, Beehive, and Route 191 areas.
After the parade, the Bangor Lodge will once again host free hot dogs and soda at the lodge for the parade participants. Further information on the parade will be released in the coming weeks.

Bach Choir Concert: Welcome to Westminster Abbey
The Bach Choir of Bethlehem welcomes Canada’s Theatre of Early Music as their Gala artist to present the American premiere of the Coronation of King George II on Saturday, October 26 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Allentown. The ensemble is led by Danny Taylor, frequent Bach soloist and a much in-demand countertenor. In creating the coronation, Taylor and his musicians deliver orchestral and choral excellence that includes Renaissance to Baroque to present-day compositions.
