Borrow a backpack full of kid-friendly tools to explore Jacobsburg! These backpacks are best for families with young children. Each backpack includes binoculars, notepad, colored pencils, magnifying lens, bug box, dip net, and five field guides for exploring the pond, insects, birds, trees, butterflies and moths. Dutch Oven Campfire Cooking Saturday, September 1 at 10:00am to 1:00pm
Have you been looking for delicious campfire recipes? Join us to learn the basics of campfire cooking with a Dutch Oven! Brian and Jean Krenicky of the Jacobsburg Historical Society will cover general instruction on getting the most from a cast iron Dutch Oven and then participants will have the opportunity to prepare lunch. We'll provide ingredients for a main dish, a side and dessert. Please let us know ahead of time if you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions and we will do our best to accomodate them. Wear comfortable clothes and bring water and your appetite. This program is only open to ages 12 and up. Registration is required.
DiscoverE: Tales for Tots Tuesdays, September 4 thru October 16, at 10:00am to 11:00am or 1:00pm to 2:00pm
Our popular Tales for Tots program returns with all new explorations! Join us for story time followed by nature activities for preschoolers ages 3-5. Each week we will explore a different topic by reading a book followed by a craft and short scavenger hunt. Adults must accompany their child. Please register your child for each session that you plan to attend. Children that attend six sessions will earn a DiscoverE Hide n’ Seekers certificate. Speaker Series: Dr. Thomas LaDuke- Rattlesnakes in Pennsylvania Friday, September 7 at 7:00 to 8:00 PM
Join Dr. Thomas C. LaDuke, Associate Professor of Biology at East Stroudsburg University, as he talks about his research with Timber Rattlesnakes in Pennsylvania. LaDuke realized in the mid-1990s that states and countries were not paying close enough attention to amphibian and reptile populations. Since no one knew the exact rattlesnake population in the state, LaDuke set up a monitoring program to make sure the state has enough rattlesnakes in its ecosystem. Registration is required.
Monarch Butterfly Tagging Sunday, September 9 at 10:00am to12:00pm
Join local butterfly enthusiast Doug Burton as he captures and tags Monarch Butterflies in the wildflower fields at Jacobsburg. We’ll also look for other butterfly species and search milkweed for Monarch caterpillars. Hat, long pants, sunscreen, and bottled water is recommended. A limited number of nets will be provided for those who wish to help Doug capture Monarchs. Registration is required.
Tuesday Trails Tuesday, September 11 at 5:30pm to 7:00pm
Get moving after work with a brisk hike at Jacobsburg! These guided monthly hikes are 2 to 2.5 miles over uneven terrain. Dogs are welcome to hike on a leash. Family Night: Snakes Alive! Friday, September 14 at 6:30 to 8:00 PM
Join us a for a family craft night followed by a slide presentation by naturalist Brian Hardiman of the Monroe County Environmental Education Center showing snake species living in eastern Pennsylvania. Brian will explain and how to identify venomous from non-venomous snakes and discuss why many snakes are in decline. This program features live snakes! Registration is required.
Bushkill Township Open Space Tour Saturday, September 15 at 9:00am to 3:00pm
For the past 15 years, Bushkill Township has worked diligently to preserve open space farmland and natural areas throughout the entire Township. Efforts have largely focused on the lands along Sobers Run, an Exceptional Value stream flowing from the Blue Mountain into Jacobsburg EE Center, as well as acquisition of remaining larger farms and other key parcels at risk for land development. Join Bushkill Township supervisor Jason Smith and DCNR educator Rick Wiltraut for this bus tour of acquired open space in the township. Registration is required. Fee of $20.00 includes transportation and lunch.
Monday Morning Birds & Beans Monday, September 24 at 8:00 to 10:00 AM
Join educator Rick Wiltraut for “bird friendly” coffee and a bird walk at Jacobsburg, focusing on identification of confusing fall warblers. Participants should dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes and bring binoculars. A limited number of binoculars and field guides will be available. Registration is not required.
Controlling Chronic Wasting Disease Friday, September 28 at 7:00pm to 8:00pm
Local Game Warden Brad Kreider will speak about what is being done to help control the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in Pennsylvania and what you can do to help. CWD has been found in white-tailed deer populations in the state and is spreading. It is a fatal disease in the same family as Mad Cow Disease in cattle. This program will provide important information about what is being done and the roles that hunters and landowners can play in preventing the spread of this disease. Registration is required.

Lukie's Fall Festival
The 15th Annual Lukie's Fall Festival will be held Saturday, October 6 at 11 AM - 5 PM at Weona Park, Pen Argyl. Lukie's Fall Festival was founded in memory of Luke Anthony Joseph Maida who passed away from Spinal Muscular Atrophy at 6 months old. As a memorial to our beloved "Lukie" and to continue his fight, we decided to host "Lukie's Fall Festival."
Lukie's Fall Festival is a fun and entertaining day, where families can come and have agreat time together, treasuring those sweet everyday moments, while helping to raise money for Cure SMA.

The Great Moon Hoax 1835
On this day in 1835, the first in a series of six articles announcing the supposed discovery of life on the moon appears in the New York Sunnewspaper.
Known collectively as “The Great Moon Hoax,” the articles were supposedly reprinted from the Edinburgh Journal of Science. The byline was Dr. Andrew Grant, described as a colleague of Sir John Herschel, a famous astronomer of the day. Herschel had in fact traveled to Capetown, South Africa, in January 1834 to set up an observatory with a powerful new telescope. As Grant described it, Herschel had found evidence of life forms on the moon, including such fantastic animals as unicorns, two-legged beavers and furry, winged humanoids resembling bats. The articles also offered vivid description of the moon’s geography, complete with massive craters, enormous amethyst crystals, rushing rivers and lush vegetation.
The New York Sun, founded in 1833, was one of the new “penny press” papers that appealed to a wider audience with a cheaper price and a more narrative style of journalism. From the day the first moon hoax article was released, sales of the paper shot up considerably. It was exciting stuff, and readers lapped it up. The only problem was that none of it was true. The Edinburgh Journal of Science had stopped publication years earlier, and Grant was a fictional character. The articles were most likely written by Richard Adams Locke, a Sun reporter educated at Cambridge University. Intended as satire, they were designed to poke fun at earlier, serious speculations about extraterrestrial life, particularly those of Reverend Thomas Dick, a popular science writer who claimed in his bestselling books that the moon alone had 4.2 billion inhabitants.

Join us to learn how to beautify your home landscaping with native plants! This half-day class will focus on native plant landscaping and management for small spaces. Each participant receives two native plants to take home. A $10.00 registration fee is required. Please bring water and a snack.

This Tuesday, Aug 28, Rep. Hahn will be hosting a telephone town hall meeting. Just before 5:30 p.m. that evening, you should receive a phone call, inviting you to stay on the line and participate in the meeting.

Celebrating the creativity, heritage, and traditions of the seven Celtic nations, Celtic Cultural Alliance announces its annual Celtic Poetry Contest for writers of all ages. Original works for the poems should reflect the Celtic culture, arts, history or literature. Personal anecdotes of family memories or travelling experiences are also encouraged.
Poems must be original in any style or length with one author. The three brackets are: 3rd through 6th grades, 7th through 12th grades, and adult. The entries must be neatly written or typed. The top poets in each category will be given a certificate and small prize and will be invited to read their poems on the stage at Celtic Heritage Hollow on September 30, 2018.

No ring binders, plastic sheet protectors or coverings and no metal strips. DO NOT BRING junk mail, greeting cards, postcards, magazines, fliers, etc. These go in a recycling bin.

Join Bushkill Township supervisor Jason Smith and DCNR educator Rick Wiltraut for this bus tour of acquired open space in the township. Registration is required. Fee of $20.00 includes transportation and lunch.

Local Game Warden Brad Kreider will speak about what is being done to help control the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in Pennsylvania and what you can do to help. CWD has been found in white-tailed deer populations in the state and is spreading. It is a fatal disease in the same family as Mad Cow Disease in cattle. This program will provide important information about what is being done and the roles that hunters and landowners can play in preventing the spread of this disease. Registration is required.

Celtic Cultural Alliance will be hosting a songwriting competition, sponsored by C.F. Martin & Co. and Sellersville Theatre, on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the Celtic Heritage Hollow Stage during the 31st Celtic Classic Highland Games and Festival. The contest is open to all amateur songwriters.
Original songs must have lyrics and be performed in person on the guitar. Songs will be judged on lyrics, melody and performance by professional musicians Graham Wright of the Glengarry Bhoys, Gerry Timlin and Seamus Kennedy. The contestant with the highest score will be awarded one Martin Guitar DRSG with case and strings along with the opportunity to audition as the opening act for a performance at the Sellersville Theatre.
