School starts Monday, August 27. Please remember to allow extra time if your morning and afternoon travels require you to interact with school buses and pedestrians.
Pennsylvania law requires motorists stop at least 10 feet away from school buses when their red lights are flashing and their stop arm is extended. Motorists following or traveling alongside a school bus must also stop until the red lights have stopped flashing and the stop arm is withdrawn. Do not proceed until all the children have reached a place of safety.
Penalties for failure to obey school bus safety laws can result in a $250 fine, five points on a driving record and a 60-day license suspension.
Parents are reminded to ensure their children arrive at the bus stop early to avoid rushing. Students should stay where the bus driver can see them while boarding or exiting the bus.

Vesuvius erupts 79
After centuries of dormancy, Mount Vesuvius erupts in southern Italy, devastating the prosperous Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum and killing thousands. The cities, buried under a thick layer of volcanic material and mud, were never rebuilt and largely forgotten in the course of history. In the 18th century, Pompeii and Herculaneum were rediscovered and excavated, providing an unprecedented archaeological record of the everyday life of an ancient civilization, startlingly preserved in sudden death.
The ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum thrived near the base of Mount Vesuvius at the Bay of Naples. In the time of the early Roman Empire, 20,000 people lived in Pompeii, including merchants, manufacturers, and farmers who exploited the rich soil of the region with numerous vineyards and orchards. None suspected that the black fertile earth was the legacy of earlier eruptions of Mount Vesuvius. Herculaneum was a city of 5,000 and a favorite summer destination for rich Romans. Named for the mythic hero Hercules, Herculaneum housed opulent villas and grand Roman baths. Gambling artifacts found in Herculaneum and a brothel unearthed in Pompeii attest to the decadent nature of the cities. There were smaller resort communities in the area as well, such as the quiet little town of Stabiae.

Celtic Poetry Contest Deadline
Celebrating the creativity, heritage, and traditions of the seven Celtic nations, Celtic Cultural Alliance announces its annual Celtic Poetry Contest for writers of all ages. Original works for the poems should reflect the Celtic culture, arts, history or literature. Personal anecdotes of family memories or travelling experiences are also encouraged.
Poems must be original in any style or length with one author. The three brackets are: 3rd through 6th grades, 7th through 12th grades, and adult. The entries must be neatly written or typed. The top poets in each category will be given a certificate and small prize and will be invited to read their poems on the stage at Celtic Heritage Hollow on September 30, 2018.
Writers should submit their entries to Marcie Mulligan at mmulligan@celticfest.org, subject: Poetry Contest or by mail to Celtic Cultural Alliance, Celtic Poetry Contest, 534 Main St., Bethlehem PA 18018 by the deadline of September 7, 2018.

LaDuke realized in the mid-1990s that states and countries were not paying close enough attention to amphibian and reptile populations. Since no one knew the exact rattlesnake population in the state, LaDuke set up a monitoring program to make sure the state has enough rattlesnakes in its ecosystem. Registration is required.

Martin & Co. and Sellersville Theatre, on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the Celtic Heritage Hollow Stage during the 31st Celtic Classic Highland Games and Festival. The contest is open to all amateur songwriters.
Original songs must have lyrics and be performed in person on the guitar. Songs will be judged on lyrics, melody and performance by professional musicians Graham Wright of the Glengarry Bhoys, Gerry Timlin and Seamus Kennedy. The contestant with the highest score will be awarded one Martin Guitar DRSG with case and strings along with the opportunity to audition as the opening act for a performance at the Sellersville Theatre.

5th Annual Spartan Sprint 5K Run/Walk
NCC's 5th Annual Spartan Sprint 5K Run/Walk will be held October 6. The run/walk starts on the beautiful Bethlehem campus of NCC and winds its way through the Moravian Academy campus before returning to NCC. All proceeds from the 5K will go towards "Spartan Aid" a fund created to assist NCC students who have financial difficulties. After the race, join us for a raffle, music and refreshments.

The 15th Annual Lukie's Fall Festival will be held Saturday, October 6 at 11 AM - 5 PM at Weona Park, Pen Argyl. Lukie's Fall Festival was founded in memory of Luke Anthony Joseph Maida who passed away from Spinal Muscular Atrophy at 6 months old. The dance concert showcases student performances with choreography by NCC dance faculty, guest choreographers and students. Sponsored by NCC Theatre Department. December 6, 11:15 a.m. and December 7, 7:30 p.m. at Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall, Bethlehem Campus. Admission is free with a donation of canned goods for the needy.
