"She's treated like a Queen"

Picture

A little piglet was on a truck headed for the slaughterhouse this summer when she got a lucky break — and fell right off it.  Pickles was only a few weeks old when she tumbled from a truck onto a busy highway in Missouri and a motorist saved her bacon.
Her rescuer then delivered her safely to Randy's Rescue Ranch in Old Fallon, Illinois, where staff immediately offered to care for the her — and now she's living a life straight out of Charlotte's Web, minus the genius and motherly spider.
The injured piglet was scooped up on June 29 by a kind driver at the junction between interstates 44 and 270 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.  He then called up Randy's Rescue Ranch to find her a home.  Ranch founder Randy Grim, 56, said a telltale tattoo on Pickles' ear indicated that she was being transferred to be raised for meat production.
"The first night I got her she was scared,' he said. 'When Pickles first came to the ranch she had a broken leg and red rash which she got from bouncing off the hot pavement.  I wrapped her in a blanket and tried to comfort her. My dogs were not thrilled,' he admitted.
'I didn’t know that much about pigs at the time. She was about three weeks old. I knew she had escaped from a factory because she has a tattoo on her ear.'  At first, he said, she was 'kind of mean' — though he thinks it's because she wasn't used to be touched by people.  Eventually, however, she warmed up. Now the lucky piglet is loving life on the ranch, playing with other farm animals and eating home-cooked meals whipped up by Randy himself.
'I'm a horrible cook and no one has ever liked anything I make but Pickles loves it. She loves squash, carrots, apples. I make her three meals a day and her snacks of course. She's treated like a queen,' he said.
Randy said Pickles has made many friends on the 20-acre ranch, which is home to 15 other farm animals.
The little piggy, who is expected to eventually grow to 300lbs., even shares a room with a Longhorn calf that Randy nursed back to heath a few months ago.  'She was going to end up being bacon,' Randy, who also runs Stray Rescue of St. Louis, said.  'Now she has a happy life. She goes on long walks on her leash, she loves playing chase with me even when I'm in my pajamas.  'She’s changed my life,' he said. 'I can't even think about eating pork anymore.'

August Rainfall Most in Many Years
Another storm with heavy rainfall dropped 1.67 inches of rain at the Town Topics weather station in Pen Argyl, which raised our monthly total to 11.45 inches with nine days left in the month.
The 11.45 inch total is the most since we began keeping records in 2010 and betters the total of 9.67 inches in June, 2015 and 9.41 inches in September, 2012.  For the year we are now 15.48 inches above normal and just two inches shy of the normal for the entire year.
We have had 13 rainy days of the 22 days in August.  However, the extended forecast right now only lists one rainy day until the beginning of September.

Wind Gap Man Arrested For
Simple Assault and Defiant Trespass

On  August 15  Slate Belt Regional Police arrested a 57-year-old Wind Gap Man and charged him with 4 Counts of Simple Assault and Harassment.  A female who lived in the residence had reported that he had assaulted her at various times over the past two weeks.  The female reported being grabbed, punched and hit with a pool stick.  Police observed injuries consistent with these assaults.  The man was arraigned and given $10,000 / 10% bail ($1,000).  He was remanded to the Northampton County Correctional Facility.
On August 20, SBRPD responded to the same residence and found that the man had been released on bail and went back to the residence, again, assaulting the female inside, demanding that she retract her statements to police.  He fled prior to police arrival.  A warrant was obtained for him.  SBRPD made contact with PSP Fern Ridge who arrested him at a residence in Stroudsburg PA.  He  arraigned in front of MDJ Schlegel who set bail at $100,000.  He  was again remanded to the Northampton County Correctional Facility.

Parasite Infections that Make Your Skin Crawl

Pork tapeworm curls up in a man's small intestine.

Picture
Doctors in India removed a 6-foot-long (1.8 meters) pork tapeworm through a man's mouth — while he was sedated, of course — after they spotted the lengthy parasite curled up in his small intestine, according to a 2017 report of the man's case published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Doctors discovered the worm nestled in the man's small intestine when they inserted a small camera into the man's mouth and down to the stomach and upper part of the small intestine.
The doctors had also performed a colonoscopy to look at the man's large intestine. There, they found a smaller segment of the worm.
People can get pork tapeworms by eating raw or undercooked pork, and the worms can live in a person's gut for a while before causing any symptoms.
After removing the lanky tapeworm through the man's mouth, doctors treated him with anti-parasitic medication to kill any remnants of the worm.

Ice Cream in Realistic Puppy Shapes

Picture
(UPI) -  A Taiwan cafe's desserts are going viral thanks to the eatery's signature ice cream dish -- in the hyper-realistic shape of a small puppies.
The J. C. Co Art Kitchen in Kaoshiung is drawing in customers by serving up gelato in the shape of labrador, pug and shar pei puppies.
The gelato is available in chocolate, peanut and milk tea flavors.
The detailed canine confections are so life-like some customers said they couldn't bear to eat them.
The cafe said it takes about five hours to create 100 servings of the ice cream dishes.

Message from Rep. Joe Emrick
School starts Monday, August 27.  Please remember to allow extra time if your morning and afternoon travels require you to interact with school buses and pedestrians.
Pennsylvania law requires motorists stop at least 10 feet away from school buses when their red lights are flashing and their stop arm is extended. Motorists following or traveling alongside a school bus must also stop until the red lights have stopped flashing and the stop arm is withdrawn. Do not proceed until all the children have reached a place of safety.
Penalties for failure to obey school bus safety laws can result in a $250 fine, five points on a driving record and a 60-day license suspension.
Parents are reminded to ensure their children arrive at the bus stop early to avoid rushing. Students should stay where the bus driver can see them while boarding or exiting the bus.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - August 23

Fannie Farmer opens cooking school  1902

On this day in 1902, pioneering cookbook author Fannie Farmer, who changed the way Americans prepare food by advocating the use of standardized measurements in recipes, opens Miss Farmer’s School of Cookery in Boston. In addition to teaching women about cooking, Farmer later educated medical professionals about the importance of proper nutrition for the sick.
Farmer was born March 23, 1857, and raised near Boston, Massachusetts. Her family believed in education for women and Farmer attended Medford High School; however, as a teenager she suffered a paralytic stroke that turned her into a homebound invalid for a period of years. As a result, she was unable to complete high school or attend college and her illness left her with a permanent limp. When she was in her early 30s, Farmer attended the Boston Cooking School. Founded in 1879, the school promoted a scientific approach to food preparation and trained women to become cooking teachers at a time when their employment opportunities were limited. Farmer graduated from the program in 1889 and in 1891 became the school’s principal. In 1896, she published her first cookbook, The Boston Cooking School Cookbook, which included a wide range of straightforward recipes along with information on cooking and sanitation techniques, household management and nutrition. Farmer’s book became a bestseller and revolutionized American cooking through its use of precise measurements, a novel culinary concept at the time.
In 1902, Farmer left the Boston Cooking School and founded Miss Farmer’s School of Cookery. In addition to running her school, she traveled to speaking engagements around the U.S. and continued to write cookbooks. In 1904, she published Food and Cookery for the Sick and Convalescent, which provided food recommendations for specific diseases, nutritional information for children and information about the digestive system, among other topics. Farmer’s expertise in the areas of nutrition and illness led her to lecture at Harvard Medical School.
