Twisted Tuesday & Tie Dye Fun
 at UMBT Summer Recreation

Picture
by Jordyn Taylor
The Upper Mount Bethel Township Summer Recreation, run annually, kept entertaining kids this summer. During the day, kids in grades Kindergarten through Seventh grade made arts and crafts, played outside on the playground, ate a snack in the cafeteria, and played games in the gym with their counselors.
The camp was held Monday-Friday from 9:00am-12:00pm. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, they cooled off at the Bangor Pool; snacking on cheese fries and lemonades and trying to be first in line for the water slide. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Washington Elementary was open for many activities. Although the counselors may have been tired at the end of the day, the campers, with their popsicle in hand, never seemed to want to leave.
The last two weeks are always special for campers, and last week started off the different activities. Instead of wearing their same-old summer clothes on Tuesday, everyone dressed as wacky as possible for “Twisted Tuesday.” Even the counselors got involved! Everyone dressed up as silly as possible and three kids from each group got to take home a prize (in addition to their craft of the day.) There were backwards clothes, silly hats, and outrageous costumes! On Thursday, art was held outside where the kids tie-dyed a white shirt to bring home. They were able to pick their design and colors and, with the counselors help, made their very own shirt (or socks and bags) that they could wear during the last week of camp.
During the last week of camp, there was water games, bubbles, a temporary tattoo station, and a pizza party where everyone stuffed their faces with pizza, cookies and popsicles. Some kids said their goodbyes a day early, but hopefully not for long, because summer is always right around the corner!
For more information about Summer Recreation, contact Director Lisa Pfeifer at 610-588-2827 or contact the Upper Mount Bethel Township directly.

Using Technology to Stay Cool in Summer

Picture
A Bright Idea
LED bulbs are more efficient than their incandescent counterparts for a reason -- less energy is used in the form of heat.
Smarter Climate Control
A smarter climate control system can keep you more comfortable for less money. In the case of Midea’s SmartCool series of window air conditioners, available now at Sam’s Club and Midea.com, you can control your air conditioning unit remotely, which can be helpful in more ways than one. When away from home, users can use the MideaAir app to control their AC from afar. When at home, they can simply use voice commands with Google Home and Amazon Alexa to set the temperature to their liking. Boasting Energy Star ratings while giving users greater flexibility, you’ll know you’re cooling your home’s spaces efficiently and affordably.
Here are a few ways to get the most out of a Wi-Fi connected unit:
• On your way home, use your app to set your AC unit to your preferred temperature so that it is cooled by the time you get home.
• If you forget to turn your AC down or off, don’t waste energy or face unnecessarily high energy bills from chilling an empty home. Use your app to set your unit to the desired temperature, let it go into sleep mode or simply turn it off completely.
• Feeling lazy? Still half asleep? Tell your voice assistant to turn the AC on from bed, the couch, or wherever you happen to be.
Smart Shades
A room with large windows can quickly feel like a greenhouse. The latest window shades can sense the amount of sun coming in through the window and close themselves automatically in order to keep out heat.        Whether you opt to control the shades via an app or let them do their own thing, smart technology around window treatments just makes good sense. StatePoint

Stroudsburg Author & the Paranormal

Picture(L-R) Elizabetha, Jordyn Taylor
by Jordyn Taylor
Author Elizabetha visited the Bangor Public Library on Saturday to talk about her first book, her upcoming books, and answer questions from fellow writers and readers.
Elizabetha is a full time fifth grade teacher from Stroudsburg who enjoys the paranormal and horror genre. She has been interested in the paranormal from a young age when she would watch horror movies with her mom. Her family, she says, has had some strange experiences which keeps her interested as well.
Her book, Mildred Shaw, is her first book which is published on Amazon. The plot centers around Cara, a witch who has her powers taken away at age thirteen because an evil is hunting her. Her memories are altered, though once she is put on the path to her true destiny, she must try to destroy what has been trying to destroy her. Cara is named after Elizabetha’s favorite restaurant, “Cara Mia.”
Elizabetha writes using her dreams and keeps a journal by her bed where she logs what happens in them. During the writing process, she will sometimes start with the title and other times will start with the plot, as she did with Mildred Shaw.
When it comes to teaching and writing, Elizabetha says her kids in her class know she’s a writer, but she tries to keep the aspects separate. “They try to get information from me,” she said, “but I don’t want the two to cross.”
Elizabetha has started the sequel in the Mildred Shaw series and says it will be a trilogy. She “already has it planned out” and has also made revisions to the first book. When the books are bought from now on, readers will receive the updated version on Amazon, and now have a chance to receive a win a free t-shirt (view the rules in the photo attached.) Those that are interested in the book or learning more about the author can visit her website at https://www.elizabethaparanormalthrillers.com/.

Help Track Bald Eagle Population

Picture
The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking for the public’s help to track the state’s growing bald eagle population. After reaching a low of just three nesting bald eagle pairs in the Commonwealth in the early 1980s, officials now estimate there are more than 300 nesting pairs here.
While bald eagles are no longer listed as a threatened species in Pennsylvania, they are still protected by the U.S. Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits taking of the birds, nests or eggs. If you spot a bald eagle nest, please use proper etiquette to avoid disturbing the birds.

Pick Up All Your Meds at Once

Picture
Recognizing the challenges some patients face in staying on track with their medications, the General Assembly has adopted a new state law to make it a little easier.
Act 46 of 2019 will allow consumers to synchronize the refilling of their prescriptions, meaning they can pick up all of their medications on one day rather than having to make multiple trips to the pharmacy. This will be especially helpful for senior citizens, busy families and others who have limited transportation options.
The law will enable consumers to synchronize their prescription refills and bar insurance companies from denying coverage for a partial fill of a script in order to facilitate medication synchronization. Thirty-five other states have enacted or introduced similar legislation.
The law takes effect next summer

Reasons Kids Should Play Outside More

Picture
Whether it’s dance lessons, computer projects, art class or yoga, kids these days are busy bees. And while such activities are enriching and fun, experts say that many kids aren’t spending enough time doing something much simpler and every bit as important as structured programming: playing outdoors.
“Finding time for the kids to play outside can be such a challenge for parents,” says Keri Wilmot, a pediatric occupational therapist and an expert contributor to TheGeniusofPlay.org.
• Physical Development: Research has shown that physically active kids tend to be leaner and healthier, while an inactive childhood can lead to a sedentary (and likely unhealthy) lifestyle in adulthood. Furthermore, physical play builds gross and fine motor skills necessary for success in school and beyond.
• Risk-Taking: Through outdoor play, children are given the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones and try new things.
• Social Skills:  From games as simple as tag, to those with more complicated rules, like “Kick the Can,” “Capture the Flag,” and sports promote teamwork and other important social skills.
• Problem Solving: Children’s imaginations are often stimulated by the world around them. Being outside widens their horizons and can encourage kids to tap into their creativity..(StatePoint)

Wolf: Trump Program Harms SNAP

Picture
Harrisburg, PA – Governor Tom Wolf Tuesday commented on the Trump Administration’s proposal to end Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility, a policy implemented by Pennsylvania and 42 other states that makes low-income families categorically eligible for food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) because they qualify for a non-cash benefit funded by Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
“This proposed change to SNAP benefits is punishment for working families across America,” Gov. Wolf said. “I oppose this ludicrous change that will hurt tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians, creating an undue burden and more food insecurity for families, older Pennsylvanians and people with disabilities who already struggle to put food on the table.”
In Pennsylvania, more than 1.7 million people rely on SNAP to afford food. The elimination of Broad-Based Categorial Eligibility jeopardizes SNAP benefits for about 200,000 people in more than 120,000 Pennsylvania households. The policy disproportionately affects the elderly and disabled populations, as well as working families.
“This proposed rule will have a negative effect on food security, including jeopardizing the school lunch program because SNAP families receive free school lunches,” Gov. Wolf said. “The federal government must do better to support working families.”
“The Trump Administration’s proposed rule targets needy families by restricting their ability to get SNAP benefits and will, quite simply, create more hungry families,” Department of Human Services Secretary Teresa Miller said. “Eliminating Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility will force families to choose between putting food on their table or covering childcare, rent, or other basic needs. This is unconscionable.”

Ackermanville Gristmill began in 1787
PHOTO GALLERY

Picture
by Jordyn Taylor

Although Speer's General Store, the leather man on the corner, and wagons on the streets of Bangor are no longer here, the Ackermanville Grist Mill still stands on Washington Boulevard (Rt 191).
The Grist Mill was originally built in 1787 and served the community for 188 years before burning down in 1921. The current building was brought to Bangor by horse drawn carriages and was a meeting place for trades of seed, corn, and flour. According to previous owner, Eric Benson, “There was a lot going on here back in the day. It was a thriving little village.”
The mill was completely powered by water from Waltz Creek. The water was converted into a pond, that is now filled in, that flowed through an underground tunnel and hit the water wheel in the basement. The equipment is still in the building and the mill is currently under restoration.
The Wetzel Brothers were the original owners of the Grist mill and its sister saw mill across the street. It has since had many owners and was recently bought by Andy Burd from Benson. Unfortunately, Benson had to sell the mill due to medical and time restrictions. However, he believes in its restoration and loves the history of the mill. Benson was the owner of the mill for five years and began the renovations. Although there is no water system, he would love to see it fully restored one day.
“When I found out that it was a true water-powered building, it really caught my interest because it's not something you come across every day,” Benson said. “It just felt like a good time to try to  make a difference and to preserve a little bit of local history.”
The Ackermanville Gristmill is one of few Gristmills left in America. Less than 2,000 still stand; some restored for other uses while others display their history. In the Ackermanville Grist Mill, signs hang from the original mill and the pulley system can be seen from outside. Pictures of the mill and information on it can be found on www.millpictures.com and a map of the area in 1874 can be found on www.historicmapworks.com. It also has a Facebook page: The Ackermanville Gristmill.
