FLASH FLOOD WATCH THROUGH THIS EVENING
The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Flash Flood Watch From 2 PM this afternoon through this evening Several rounds of heavy showers and thunderstorms will affect the area through this evening. The heaviest rainfall is expected later this afternoon into this evening as a cold front moves across the area. Those areas that received heavy rainfall on Friday will be the most susceptible to flash flooding. Heavy rainfall within a short period of time can lead to rapidly rising water and flash flooding, particularly in urban areas, and along small creeks and streams. The ground remains fairly saturated due to recent heavy rains over the past several weeks.

The Bangor Pool Pooch Plunge will be August 19th from 11 am to 1 pm. The last day of the pool season is one for our furry friends. Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish soda bread contest sponsored by King Arthur at Celtic Classic on September 29, 2018. mateur bakers should bring their favorite Irish soda bread to Celtic Classic to be crowned the best by judges Jennifer Sheehan, Dean Donaher, and Suzie Farley. Contestants are asked to register prior to September 7, 2018, and some spots will be reserved for walk ups at Celtic Classic. Contestants are sked to use King Arthur flour to receive the prizes. There is no fee to enter.
The soda bread will be scored based on taste, overall appearance, creativity and texture. Soviet hard-liners launch coup against Gorbachev 1991
On this day in 1991, Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev is placed under house arrest during a coup by high-ranking members of his own government, military and police forces.
Since becoming secretary of the Communist Party in 1985 and president of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1988, Gorbachev had pursued comprehensive reforms of the Soviet system. Combining perestroika(“restructuring”) of the economy–including a greater emphasis on free-market policies–and glasnost (“openness”) in diplomacy, he greatly improved Soviet relations with Western democracies, particularly the United States. Meanwhile, though, within the USSR, Gorbachev faced powerful critics, including conservative, hard-line politicians and military officials who thought he was driving the Soviet Union toward its downfall and making it a second-rate power. On the other side were even more radical reformers–particularly Boris Yeltsin, president of the most powerful socialist republic, Russia–who complained that Gorbachev was just not working fast enough.
The August 1991 coup was carried out by the hard-line elements within Gorbachev’s own administration, as well as the heads of the Soviet army and the KGB, or secret police. Celebrating the creativity, heritage, and traditions of the seven Celtic nations, Celtic Cultural Alliance announces its annual Celtic Poetry Contest for writers of all ages. Original works for the poems should reflect the Celtic culture, arts, history or literature. Personal anecdotes of family memories or travelling experiences are also encouraged.
Poems must be original in any style or length with one author. The three brackets are: 3rd through 6th grades, 7th through 12th grades, and adult. The entries must be neatly written or typed. The top poets in each category will be given a certificate and small prize and will be invited to read their poems on the stage at Celtic Heritage Hollow on September 30, 2018.

Accepted items are financial statements, medical records, investment transactions, employee payvstubs, Social Security or credit card numbers, pre-approved credit card applications, legal documents, tax forms, accounting files, cancelled checks, credit reward or bonus cards. No ring binders, plastic sheet protectors or coverings and no metal strips. DO NOT BRING junk mail, greeting cards, postcards, magazines, fliers, etc. These go in a recycling bin.

Celtic Cultural Alliance Announces Songwriting Competition
Celtic Cultural Alliance will be hosting a songwriting competition, sponsored by C.F. Martin & Co. and Sellersville Theatre, on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the Celtic Heritage Hollow Stage during the 31st Celtic Classic Highland Games and Festival. The contest is open to all amateur songwriters.
Original songs must have lyrics and be performed in person on the guitar. Songs will be judged on lyrics, melody and performance by professional musicians Graham Wright of the Glengarry Bhoys, Gerry Timlin and Seamus Kennedy. The contestant with the highest score will be awarded one Martin Guitar DRSG with case and strings along with the opportunity to audition as the opening act for a performance at the Sellersville Theatre.

The hour long program will be by registration only and will include a tour of the landfill. Scouts that participate will receive a special badge from Waste Management! Seating is limited.
