FLASH FLOOD WATCH THROUGH THIS EVENING
The Flash Flood Watch continues for the Slate Belt and surrounding area. Through this evening several rounds of heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to impact the area into this evening. The storms will be capable of producing very heavy downpours resulting in urban, small stream and flash flooding. Heavy rainfall within a short period of time can lead to rapidly rising water and flash flooding, particularly in urban areas, and along small streams and creeks. The ground remains fairly saturated due to the recent heavy rainfall. A Flash Flood Watch means that there is the potential for flash flooding which can be life-threatening. Heavy rain is expected to occur over a short period of time. Rapidly rising flood waters may quickly inundate roadways and areas of poor drainage. Streams and creeks could leave their banks, flooding nearby properties. Please monitor the forecast, especially if you live in a location that is prone to flooding. Be prepared to take action if a flash flood warning is issued for your area.

Blue Valley Farm Show Starts Tuesday
After year's absence, amusement rides are returning to the Blue Valley Farm Show this year on American Bangor road. The show opens tomorrow and runs through Saturday August 18. Click here for a complete schedule. Tuesday, they are offering a two-wristband special for only $20 and Thursday they are doing a $12-wristband special. A Car Cruise is the highlight Wednesday night at 5 pm. Wine Tasting by Tolino's Vineyard will be available Friday night and Franklin Hill Vineyard Saturday night starting at 5 pm both nights. Kids fingerprinting provided by Washington Twp and Slate Belt Regional Police Departments will be done Wednesday night. Animal shows are scheduled for Tuesday at 6:30 pm, Dairy Wednesday at 5 pm and Goat & Poultry at 6:00pm. New Law Protects Care-Dependent Individuals
A new law taking effect soon will better protect individuals who are dependent upon others for their care. Act 53 of 2018 will make it a crime to intentionally or recklessly endanger a care-dependent person – closing a gap in state law that exists between neglect and abuse. This addition to the Crimes Code includes neglect to provide care which causes a serious injury or death. This stems from a Bucks County case in which an elderly man was neglected so badly by four family caregivers his starvation led to septic shock.
The new law also adds abuse of a care-dependent person as a punishable offense – with the former law focusing only on neglect investigations – and expands the definition of a caretaker to include family members who should be held responsible. This law was necessary because some care-dependent people, who are among the most vulnerable groups of people in the state, were left without direct protections from the abuse and neglect by their caretakers.
The law allows the departments of Aging, Health and Human Services to report suspected abuse or neglect to district attorneys or the attorney general’s office. Penalties vary from a first-degree felony for death of a care-dependent person to a second-degree misdemeanor if a caretaker knowingly endangers a care-dependent person by failing to provide for his or her needs.

Berlin is divided 1961
Shortly after midnight on this day in 1961, East German soldiers begin laying down barbed wire and bricks as a barrier between Soviet-controlled East Berlin and the democratic western section of the city.
After World War II, defeated Germany was divided into Soviet, American, British and French zones of occupation. The city of Berlin, though technically part of the Soviet zone, was also split, with the Soviets taking the eastern part of the city. After a massive Allied airlift in June 1948 foiled a Soviet attempt to blockade West Berlin, the eastern section was drawn even more tightly into the Soviet fold. Over the next 12 years, cut off from its western counterpart and basically reduced to a Soviet satellite, East Germany saw between 2.5 million and 3 million of its citizens head to West Germany in search of better opportunities. By 1961, some 1,000 East Germans–including many skilled laborers, professionals and intellectuals–were leaving every day.
In August, Walter Ulbricht, the Communist leader of East Germany, got the go-ahead from Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev to begin the sealing off of all access between East and West Berlin. Soldiers began the work over the night of August 12-13, laying more than 100 miles of barbed wire slightly inside the East Berlin border. The wire was soon replaced by a six-foot-high, 96-mile-long wall of concrete blocks, complete with guard towers, machine gun posts and searchlights. Seventh Annual Mass at St. Roch's
The celebration of the Seventh Annual Mass will be held on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Roch’s Catholic Church, West Bangor. The Mass will include the Feast of the Assumption and the honoring of the Patron Saint of St. Roch. The Reverend Monsignor Vincent P. York, Pastor of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish, Pen Argyl, will be the Celebrant. This Annual Mass has been held at the closed church each August since 2015.
The liturgy and music for the August Mass will include reading and hymns. Attendees will also participate in reading the prayer to St. Roch. Former parishioners and all those who wish to fulfill their Holy Day Obligation to attend Mass on the Feast Day of the Assumption of our Lady may do so at the Mass at St. Roch’s in West Bangor.

Celtic Poetry Contest Deadline
Celebrating the creativity, heritage, and traditions of the seven Celtic nations, Celtic Cultural Alliance announces its annual Celtic Poetry Contest for writers of all ages. Original works for the poems should reflect the Celtic culture, arts, history or literature. Personal anecdotes of family memories or travelling experiences are also encouraged.
Poems must be original in any style or length with one author. The three brackets are: 3rd through 6th grades, 7th through 12th grades, and adult. The entries must be neatly written or typed. The top poets in each category will be given a certificate and small prize and will be invited to read their poems on the stage at Celtic Heritage Hollow on September 30, 2018.

Celebrating the creativity, heritage, and traditions of the seven Celtic nations, Celtic Cultural Alliance announces its annual Celtic Poetry Contest for writers of all ages. Original works for the poems should reflect the Celtic culture, arts, history or literature. Personal anecdotes of family memories or travelling experiences are also encouraged.
Poems must be original in any style or length with one author. The three brackets are: 3rd through 6th grades, 7th through 12th grades, and adult. The entries must be neatly written or typed. The top poets in each category will be given a certificate and small prize and will be invited to read their poems on the stage at Celtic Heritage Hollow on September 30, 2018.

A mobile paper shredding event is scheduled for September 15 from 9 am to 12 pm at Weona Park in Pen Argyl. This event is for Northampton County Residents only. No business or commercial shredding will be allowed. Accepted items are financial statements, medical records, investment transactions, employee payvstubs, Social Security or credit card numbers, pre-approved credit card applications, legal documents, tax forms, accounting files, cancelled checks, credit reward or bonus cards. No ring binders, plastic sheet protectors or coverings and no metal strips. DO NOT BRING junk mail, greeting cards, postcards, magazines, fliers, etc. These go in a recycling bin.

Celtic Cultural Alliance Announces Songwriting Competition
Celtic Cultural Alliance will be hosting a songwriting competition, sponsored by C.F. Martin & Co. and Sellersville Theatre, on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the Celtic Heritage Hollow Stage during the 31st Celtic Classic Highland Games and Festival. The contest is open to all amateur songwriters.
Original songs must have lyrics and be performed in person on the guitar. Songs will be judged on lyrics, melody and performance by professional musicians Graham Wright of the Glengarry Bhoys, Gerry Timlin and Seamus Kennedy. The contestant with the highest score will be awarded one Martin Guitar DRSG with case and strings along with the opportunity to audition as the opening act for a performance at the Sellersville Theatre.

Calling Scout troops and their parents! Grand Central will host a Scout Day on Columbus Day 2018, Monday, October 8 at 9 AM - 12 PM. The Scout Day is open to all age scouts and a parent. The hour long program will be by registration only and will include a tour of the landfill. Scouts that participate will receive a special badge from Waste Management! Seating is limited. Registration is required. Interested scouts, leaders, parents should contact Community Relations Manager Adrienne Fors at afors1@wm.com. Full troops are welcome! Topics will include solid waste, environmental protection, gas collection, wildlife habitats and more! This event could earn scouts other badges within their respective organizations. (check with your Scout Master) There will be 3 tours and activity hours, please specify which tour hour you'd like to be in.
