Spring Allergies? - Try This Hopefully Spring will soon be in the air, and your house may be begging for some much-needed post-winter freshening. Don’t let the idea of spring cleaning overwhelm you. Here are some easy ways you can freshen up your home for the new season — without toxic chemicals!
Create a non-toxic room spray by mixing ¼ cup vodka, 1 cup water, 15 drops lavender essential oil, 10 drops tea tree essential oil, and 5 drops eucalyptus essential oil in a spray bottle. Also makes a great deodorizer for pet bedding. Give your carpet some freshening by sprinkling baking soda and letting it sit for a half hour, then vacuum.
Take down that grungy plastic shower curtain and wash it with a load of soiled towels. Add 1 cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle. Hang it back up to dry with the exhaust fan running, or line dry it outside. Freshen your drapes, comforters, throw rugs, and blankets by hanging them outside (weather permitting – not recommended on very humid days) for a couple of hours. Let the sun and wind work their magic. If the items are especially musty, sprinkle them with baking soda first. Shake or vacuum off. To remove stubborn stains and deodorize the toilet pour in a 1/2 cup baking soda and 1 cup white vinegar into the bowl. When the fizzing stops, swish with a scrub brush, and flush. Use a pair of rubber kitchen gloves, dampened, to remove cat and dog hair from clothes and furniture. Rub in circles and toss the collected hair. To de-grease the kitchen cabinets, wipe them down with a mixture of 1 quart of hot water and 1/2 cup of lemon juice. A lemon juice and salt mixture makes a good copper and brass cleaner, as well as an effective mildew stain remover. Sprinkle the area with salt and rub with a half-cut lemon. Veterans Assistance Day

Book Review
"The Johnstown Flood" by David McCullough; review by Katy Albanese A recent Express-Times article commemorated the 50th anniversary of The Johnstown Flood, (974.8 MCC), which launched the writing career of David McCullough. He has since become one of our country’s foremost historians. McCullough’s meticulous research and concise writing style explained the events leading up to the disaster in Johnstown, PA in 1889. The owners of a fishing club 14 miles above the city of Johnstown neglected to maintain a dam on their property. When a torrential rainstorm drenched the area, the ensuing flood took more than 2000 lives. Readers of this tragedy learn that the wealthy owners of the Club did not act responsibly, even though the townspeople assumed they were looking out for the citizens down in the valley. In the fifty years since the book on Johnstown was published, McCullough has continued to write. The library has many of his titles, including Truman, 1776, John Adams, Mornings on Horseback (Theodore Roosevelt), The Great Bridge (Brooklyn Bridge), Path between the Seas (Panama Canal) and The Wright Brothers. Each topic is well written, thoroughly researched, easy to read and informative. Expand your horizons and check out one of McCullough’s book the next time you visit the library.GRA. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - April 9Robert E. Lee surrenders 1865 At Appomattox, Virginia Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrenders his 28,000 troops to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the American Civil War. Forced to abandon the Confederate capital of Richmond, blocked from joining the surviving Confederate force in North Carolina, and harassed constantly by Union cavalry, Lee had no other option. In retreating from the Union army’s Appomattox Campaign, the Army of Northern Virginia had stumbled through the Virginia countryside stripped of food and supplies. At one point, Union cavalry forces under General Philip Sheridan had actually outrun Lee’s army, blocking their retreat and taking 6,000 prisoners at Sayler’s Creek. Desertions were mounting daily, and by April 8 the Confederates were surrounded with no possibility of escape. On April 9, Lee sent a message to Grant announcing his willingness to surrender. The two generals met in the parlor of the Wilmer McLean home at one o’clock in the afternoon. Lee and Grant, both holding the highest rank in their respective armies, had known each other slightly during the Mexican War and exchanged awkward personal inquiries. Characteristically, Grant arrived in his muddy field uniform while Lee had turned out in full dress attire, complete with sash and sword. Lee asked for the terms, and Grant hurriedly wrote them out. All officers and men were to be pardoned, and they would be sent home with their private property–most important, the horses, which could be used for a late spring planting. Officers would keep their side arms, and Lee’s starving men would be given Union rations.

Jacktown-Blue Mountain Antique Gas & Steam Engine Association May Swap Meet is right around the corner! These are first come first serve spots and are $50.00 each this year and money will be collected as you set up. Just a reminder that there are no gun sales allowed. They will be posting more as the time gets closer. Please feel free to share! The Swap Meet is May 19th and 20th. Spots are available on a first come first serve basis. A spot is 20' X 25' and are $50.00 per spot and allows you both days. You can use more than one spot, but you will need to pay $50.00 for each additional spot you use. If you only want to stay one day the charge is still $50.00. You may start setting up as early as Wednesday May 16th and we will be by to collect at that time. We ask that everyone work on the honor system and if you set up early please do not sell anything until the start of the swap meet. We will have someone come around and collect the money. Our club depends on these funds to keep it running. Please help us keep Jacktown going for years to come. Should you have any questions or if you would like to volunteer please contact Tom Buist at 610-588-7360. May 20
