PennDOT I-80 Work in Delaware Water Gap
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today restrictions are scheduled to commence next week for work on a project to improve the Interstate 80 Exit 310 (PA 611/Delaware Water Gap) interchange in Monroe County.
  •    The project entails replacing the Exit 310 on-ramp bridge to I-80 east in Smithfield Township, and the Exit 310 off-ramp from I-80 west in Delaware Water Gap Borough. Both ramps traverse I-80.
  • Also, the project includes replacing the existing signalized intersection where Broad Street, River Road, Foxtown Hill Road and the Exit 310 ramps meet in Smithfield Township with a roundabout.
  • Starting Monday (April 9), weeknight lane restrictions (10:00 PM to 5:00AM) will occur on I-80 between the Delaware River and Exit 309 (US 209/PA 447).
  • These weeknight restrictions are expected to last through the month of April, however there may be future times when they are implemented.
  • Weekday lane restrictions (7:00 AM to 5:00 PM) will also begin Monday on Broad Street between I-80 and Shelding Road, and River Road between I-80 and Foxtown Hill Road. These weekday restrictions will occur throughout the duration of the project.
  • There will be times later this spring and summer when detours are implemented for Broad Street, River Road, and Foxtown Hill Road during construction of the roundabout. Updates will be provided prior to any detours being implemented.
  • There will also be times when rolling stoppages occur on I-80 east and west between the hours of 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM, and at least one time when I-80 east is closed and detoured between 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM (I-80 east traffic will detour off at Exit 310 and back on at Exit 310).
All schedules are weather permitting, and updates will be provided to the public in advance of any traffic pattern changes.
For more information on projects occurring or being bid this year, those made possible by or accelerated by Act 89, or those on the department’s Four and Twelve Year Plans, visit www.projects.penndot.gov.

Spring Allergies? - Try This

Picture
  1.     Seasonal allergies affect anywhere between 20 and 30 percent of the U.S. population. Those itchy, sneezy, wheezy feelings start in early spring when the flowers start coming out.
Then, just as the flowers start to fall, the grass begins to release pollen, and the misery continues through late July. Allergy-sufferers then enjoy a small respite until August, when ragweed rears its nasty head. Then, while others are thinking about pumpkins, football, and raking leaves, you’re thinking about your hay fever misery. And winter has its own set of allergens, depending on where you live.
Here are a few natural remedies to help you ease the sneeze of seasonal allergies:
Apple cider vinegar — Drinking about two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in an 8 oz. glass of water once every day, either all year or just during allergy season, can help to slow the production of the histamines that create allergic reactions.
Local honey -- Eating honey made by local bees can help alleviates allergy symptoms because it is made from the same plants causing the allergic reaction. Taking in a small amount of the allergen works just like a vaccine, helping your immune system build antibodies against it.
Lime Juice — The juice of half a lime into a glass of lukewarm water and sweetened with a teaspoon of honey flushes the system of toxins from allergens. Drink this mixture once daily, first thing in the morning.
Chamomile tea -- Recognized throughout the world as a natural antihistamine, one or two daily cups of chamomile tea, sweetened with honey, can provide immunity toward many common allergens.
Garlic -- Another good natural antihistamine is garlic. Incorporating it into meals will not only help fight allergy symptoms, it also adds a flavor boost to many popular dishes.

Book Review
"The Johnstown Flood" by David McCullough; review by Katy Albanese
A recent Express-Times article commemorated the 50th anniversary of The Johnstown Flood, (974.8 MCC), which launched the writing career of David McCullough. He has since become one of our country’s foremost historians. McCullough’s meticulous research and  concise writing style explained the events leading up to the disaster in Johnstown, PA in 1889.
The owners of a fishing club 14 miles above the city of Johnstown neglected to maintain a dam on their property. When a torrential rainstorm drenched the area, the ensuing flood took more than 2000 lives.
Readers of this tragedy learn that the wealthy owners of the Club did not act responsibly, even though the townspeople assumed they were looking out for the citizens down in the valley.
In the fifty years since the book on Johnstown was published, McCullough has continued to write.     The library has many of his titles, including Truman, 1776, John Adams, Mornings on Horseback (Theodore Roosevelt), The Great Bridge (Brooklyn Bridge), Path between the Seas (Panama Canal) and The Wright Brothers. Each topic is well written, thoroughly researched, easy to read and informative.
Expand your horizons and check out one of McCullough’s book the next time you visit the library.GRA.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - April 8

Aaron sets new home run record  1974

On this day in 1974, Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves hits his 715th career home run, breaking Babe Ruth’s legendary record of 714 homers. A crowd of 53,775 people, the largest in the history of Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, was with Aaron that night to cheer when he hit a 4th inning pitch off the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Al Downing. However, as Aaron was an African American who had received death threats and racist hate mail during his pursuit of one of baseball’s most distinguished records, the achievement was bittersweet.
Henry Louis Aaron Jr., born in Mobile, Alabama, on February 5, 1934, made his Major League debut in 1954 with the Milwaukee Braves, just eight years after Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier and became the first African American to play in the majors. Aaron, known as hard working and quiet, was the last Negro league player to also compete in the Major Leagues. In 1957, with characteristically little fanfare, Aaron, who primarily played right field, was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player as the Milwaukee Braves won the pennant. A few weeks later, his three home runs in the World Series helped his team triumph over the heavily favored New York Yankees. Although “Hammerin’ Hank” specialized in home runs, he was also an extremely dependable batter, and by the end of his career he held baseball’s career record for most runs batted in: 2,297.
Aaron’s playing career spanned three teams and 23 years. He was with the Milwaukee Braves from 1954 to 1965, the Atlanta Braves from 1966 to 1974 and the Milwaukee Brewers from 1975 to 1976. He hung up his cleats in 1976 with 755 career home runs and went on to become one of baseball’s first African-American executives, with the Atlanta Braves, and a leading spokesperson for minority hiring.
