Surprise 90th Birthday Celebration
Doris Bergen of Upper Mt Bethel Township was honored by family and friends at a surprise 90th Birthday "Cuzzie's Convention" at The Stroudsmore.
She hates surprises but she was delighted and overwhelmed that so many family members were able to attend. Her daughters Karen Neale of Hampton, NJ and Suzi Trizzino and grandson Sal "Buddy" of Long Island NY hosted the party and had multicolored special tee shirts made for the occasion. Doris and her late husband Charles Robert relocated to the Slate Belt after they retired in New Jersey. Doris is an active member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Roman Catholic Church in Roseto PA; Bangor Womens Club GFWC serving as an officer; and Red Hats. She loves to solve Sudoku puzzles and play Pinochle and Bridge with her friends in various card clubs. Doney Prints Moved To Heritage Center.....

Library Silent Auction/Author Luncheon
The Blue Mt. Community Library is currently holding a “Spring Silent Auction” at the library. Items such as a Jewelry Box/Bracelet, Kitchen Items, Wallet and Handbag, and Picnic & Camping items are available to bid on through May 5. There is also a large Hand-crafted Doily. These would make a great Mother’s Day gift! There are still tickets available for the Author Luncheon with Kate Brandes on April 26. Tickets are $10 each and must be purchased ahead of the Luncheon by April 19. Harlem Wizards Basketball Game
The Bangor Area Middle School PTSO (Parent, Teacher, Student, Organization) is hosting its 1st Annual Harlem Wizards Basketball Game on April 7, 2018. While the PTSO is fairly new, we are running this fundraiser in hopes that we can raise enough money to assist the school with future purchases that are not in their budget such as: new library books, school supplies and equipment, funding field trips and assemblies, as well as assist with purchases for the school dances throughout the year. We wanted to take a new approach to fundraising and offer a family friendly event that would bring the community together for a great cause and promote wellness at the same time. We will have our own team consisting of teachers and staff from each school in the district as well as some High School players. Our team will be playing against the Harlem Wizards. January, 2018 - Streams from two cameras at the nest site went live. One camera is more of a side angle and the other a view from above, which also has infrared capabilities for night viewing.. December 2017 - Staff members from HDOnTap and Codorus State Park worked through the cold and wind to replace and rewire cables at the nest site. Some of the nest had fallen. This service is offered on the second Tuesday of each month. The district office is located at 2989 Route 611, Suite 103 Tannersville, PA 18372. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a service officer with the American Legion Pennsylvania Department will be on site to assist veterans with issues including: compensation and pension claims, education benefits, enrollment in the VA health care system, burial and survivor benefits, state benefits, and obtaining military personnel and medical records. Veterans do not need to be a member of the American Legion to receive these services. Please contact the Tannersville office to schedule an appointment at 570-620-4326. "Killers of the Flower Moon" by David Grann; review by Katy Albanese In the early years of the 20th century, the Osage Indians in the north, central part of Oklahoma were the wealthiest people in America. They were living on top of rich oil reserves, and as the oil was pumped from the ground, the Osage received a percentage of each barrel. At the same time, these people were enjoying unprecedented wealth, they were dying in numbers far exceeding the national average. While some deaths appeared to be from natural causes, many were obvious murders. And no one, not law enforcement, not politicians, not doctors, were doing anything to stop these crimes. What was happening to these peaceful, mild-mannered Native Americans? After many years of terror, the federal government became involved in solving these crimes. The FBI, in its first celebrated case, under the direction of J. Edgar Hoover, sent in law enforcement agents who spent years digging through evidence and interviewing witnesses. The Osage murders helped legitimize the existence of the FBI, and Hoover used the story to bolster his own agenda. This book tells the story of the plot to eliminate a whole group of people and also shows the prejudice most white Americans had for the Native Americans. These crimes could not have taken place had not racism been a part of the mindset for those in power. The author does an excellent job of taking the reader through the history of the Osage, Hoover and the FBI and the history of this horrendous conspiracy. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - April 6First modern Olympic Games 1896 On April 6, 1896, the Olympic Games, a long-lost tradition of ancient Greece, are reborn in Athens 1,500 years after being banned by Roman Emperor Theodosius I. At the opening of the Athens Games, King Georgios I of Greece and a crowd of 60,000 spectators welcomed athletes from 13 nations to the international competition. The first recorded Olympic Games were held at Olympia in the Greek city-state of Elis in 776 B.C., but it is generally accepted that the Olympics were at least 500 years old at that time. The ancient Olympics, held every four years, occurred during a religious festival honoring the Greek god Zeus. In the eighth century B.C., contestants came from a dozen or more Greek cities, and by the fifth century B.C. from as many as 100 cities from throughout the Greek empire. Initially, Olympic competition was limited to foot races, but later a number of other events were added, including wrestling, boxing, horse and chariot racing, and military competitions. The pentathlon, introduced in 708 B.C., consisted of a foot race, the long jump, discus and javelin throws, and wrestling. With the rise of Rome, the Olympics declined, and in 393 A.D. the Roman Emperor Theodosius I, a Christian, abolished the Games as part of his efforts to suppress paganism in the Roman Empire. With the Renaissance, Europe began a long fascination with ancient Greek culture, and in the 18th and 19th centuries some nations staged informal sporting and folkloric festivals bearing the name “Olympic Games.” However, it was not until 1892 that a young French baron, Pierre de Coubertin, seriously proposed reviving the Olympics as a major international competition that would occur every four years. At a conference on international sport in Paris in June 1894, Coubertin again raised the idea, and the 79 delegates from nine countries unanimously approved his proposal. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was formed, and the first Games were planned for 1896 in Athens, the capital of Greece.

Heritage Center Presentation
The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Thursday, April 12th @ 7:00 PM. Speaker for the evening will be Mr. Joel Hoffner who will present: “Genealogy Tricks, Traps, Trails, Tribulations and Triumphs”. Mr. Hoffner is a Research Assistant at the Sigal Museum in Easton and is a long time genealogist. This program is in conjunction with the Center’s new exhibit in the Council Chamber; “Who Do You think We Are”? This year long event explores the detective story behind everyone’s family tree. Using clues from Slate Belt stories, the exhibit follows families back to their roots, much like the popular TV shows, “Finding Your Roots” and “Who Do You think You Are”? Mr. Hoffner will provide answers to those seeking to trace their roots while avoiding pit-falls along the way. The event is free and open to the public. Ogham Art Tile Class
Celtic Cultural Alliance is excited to announce an Ogham Art Tile Class, led by Nancy Lewis. This workshop takes place in two sessions: April 18th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and April 25th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.. Come join us for a fun night of exploring the Ogham alphabet, and then create your own design in a clay slab. After it is fired, come back to class one week later and glaze it. The ceramic piece can be picked up at Celtic Cultural Alliance after May 2. The Ogham alphabet was used to represent the Primitive Irish language using a series of perpendicular and intersecting lines, written vertically, and then read from bottom to top. This class is suitable for ages 16 and up. Instructor Nancy Lewis is a talented artist who continually inspires as students as an art teacher at Liberty High School. A graduate of Kutztown University, she enjoys ceramics, watercolor and pen and ink. She resides in Bethlehem along with her husband, George, and their children. The cost of the class is $35.00. Earth Day Festival
Waste Management presents Grand Central Sanitary Landfill’s Earth Day Festival April 22 from 11am to 2pm at Grand Central Environmental Education Center, 891 Grand Central Road, Pen Argyl. Look for Education Center sign at end of driveway; Watch for Signs on Pen Argyl Road. Eagle Scout Justin Anthony from Troop 33 will be honored. There will be presentations by Bear Mountain Butterflies and PT Reptiles where you will be able to hold live reptiles and butterflies. Activities include Recycling Games, a Nature Hike, Composting Discussion and even a Waste Management CNG Truck for kids to take their photo with and more! A bake sale and snack tables will be set up for purchase by the Scouts. Little Creek BBQ will be selling HOT Delicious Sandwiches! There will be free fun and giveaways for the kids. Support the Plainfield Township Lions Club and bring any eyeglasses that are no longer in need to recycle! Ogham Art Tile Class
Celtic Cultural Alliance is excited to announce an Ogham Art Tile Class, led by Nancy Lewis. This workshop takes place in two sessions: April 18th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and April 25th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.. Come join us for a fun night of exploring the Ogham alphabet, and then create your own design in a clay slab. After it is fired, come back to class one week later and glaze it. The ceramic piece can be picked up at Celtic Cultural Alliance after May 2. The Ogham alphabet was used to represent the Primitive Irish language using a series of perpendicular and intersecting lines, written vertically, and then read from bottom to top. This class is suitable for ages 16 and up. Instructor Nancy Lewis is a talented artist who continually inspires as students as an art teacher at Liberty High School. A graduate of Kutztown University, she enjoys ceramics, watercolor and pen and ink. She resides in Bethlehem along with her husband, George, and their children. The cost of the class is $35.00. The Lookout Fire Company, is proud to once again host its annual sportsman drawing and meat raffle on Saturday April 28, 2018 at the Weona Park Community center from 1 PM till 5 PM! Basic Boating Course at Jacobsburg Saturday, April 28, 8:00am to 4:00pm The PA Fish & Boat Commission’s PA Basic Boating Course was developed to supply boaters with practical information so they can make better informed decisions on the water. Instructors provide students with information to help them reduce the risk of injury and conflict on the water. Breast Friends Bingo
Breast Friends of PA Coach Bingo will be held Sunday, April 29 at 12 pm in the Charter's Banquest Facility at Plainfield Township Volunteer Fire Company in Wind Gap. Please come out and support Breast Friends of PA as we support the men and women of PA. Help us help those through the trauma of cancer one friend at a time. The afternoon will feature 15 games of bingo and 1 Buy in game grand finale. An authentic Coach handbag will be going to the individual winner of each game. All participants will have an opportunity to purchase 50/50, Raffle tickets and extra sets of bingo packs. All tickets will most likely sell out in pre sales. Admission is $30 per person pre-sale. Swap Meet
Jacktown-Blue Mountain Antique Gas & Steam Engine Association May Swap Meet is right around the corner! These are first come first serve spots and are $50.00 each this year and money will be collected as you set up. Just a reminder that there are no gun sales allowed. They will be posting more as the time gets closer. Please feel free to share! The Swap Meet is May 19th and 20th. Spots are available on a first come first serve basis. A spot is 20' X 25' and are $50.00 per spot and allows you both days. You can use more than one spot, but you will need to pay $50.00 for each additional spot you use. If you only want to stay one day the charge is still $50.00. You may start setting up as early as Wednesday May 16th and we will be by to collect at that time. We ask that everyone work on the honor system and if you set up early please do not sell anything until the start of the swap meet. We will have someone come around and collect the money. Our club depends on these funds to keep it running. Please help us keep Jacktown going for years to come. Demonstration for the Slate Belt Heritage Center Bangor Quarry Hoist will be held Thursday, July 12 at 7 PM - 8 PM at 1st Street and Market Street, Bangor, Pennsylvania 18013 The Bangor Quarry Hoist has booked its first event! On Thursday, July 12, 2018, at 7 PM, it will operate for the Slate Belt Heritage Center's monthly program, which will occur at the Hoist. The program will detail the restoration of the hoist and feature a live demonstration.
