GERRYMANDERING is dividing a state, county, etc., into election districts in such a way to give one political party a majority in many districts while concentrating the voting strength of the other party into as few districts as possible.

Fair Districts PA Wants Gerrymandering Fix

Allentown, PA — Recently, the Supreme Court  and a Federal District Court denied appeals to block the implementation of the new Congressional map drawn by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. The new map was the culmination of a lawsuit filed by the League of Women Voters, a number of court orders, judicial opinions and subsequent legal challenges.
“Lots of people are happy that the Lehigh Valley district now includes all of Lehigh and Northampton Counties. However, what these past few years have proven is that the system is broken and needs to be fixed. The fight in the General Assembly over the maps will continue, unless a permanent solution is enacted.” said Carla Colangelo, Lehigh/Northampton Local Group Coordinator of Fair Districts PA, a non-partisan, statewide citizens group pushing for redistricting reform.
Fair Districts PA Lehigh/Northampton have joined thousands of citizens from across the state in asking legislators to pass a constitutional amendment that would reform the redistricting process for both Congressional and State legislative districts.
“People don’t understand that the new map just affects our Congressional districts, and that the map will be redrawn again in 2020. PA Legislative maps and even Senate maps are affected by gerrymandering as well. In Northampton County, Lower Mount Bethel Township has two different state Senators. Moore Township and Palmer Townships have two different state representatives,” says Colangelo
Legislation that would provide a permanent fix by creating an independent citizens’ redistricting commission has been gaining support in both the PA House and Senate since it was introduced early in the legislative session.
House Bill 722 has 109 co-sponsors and Senate Bill 22 has been steadily gaining co-sponsorship from both parties. On the Senate side, Senator Lisa Boscola and Senator Mario Scavello are prime sponsors, while Senator Pat Browne has signed on as a co-sponsor.
The Senate bill will get a hearing March 27, but the House bill remains trapped in the State Government Committee. As the 2020 Census approaches, it is likely that Pennsylvania will lose a congressional seat — triggering the redistricting process once again.
“This legislation enjoys widespread and bipartisan support in the Lehigh Valley. Lehigh and Northampton Counties, as well as Bethlehem and Easton have passed resolutions supporting an independent citizens’ redistricting commission. This past month, four townships passed our resolution in Lehigh County, and we are on the agenda for five more in April, including Palmer and Washington Townships in Northampton County.” said Colangelo.
“The Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s decision is a win for all Pennsylvania voters because it reaffirms one of the most fundamental principles of our system of representative democracy — the right of the people, not political party leaders, to decide who will represent us in the halls of government,” said Carol Kuniholm, chair of Fair Districts PA.
Fair Districts PA Lehigh/Northampton Counties will be hosting an informational session on Tuesday, April 3 at 7pm at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 404 Broadway in Bangor. The event is free and the public is welcome to attend to learn more about redistricting and to get their questions answered

Monday Snow No April Fool's Prank
Monday's six-inch snow storm laid to rest the notion that an April Fool's day winter weather advisory for Monday was not an April Fool's joke.
Although the remnants of the storm are melting nearly as fast as the snow fell, it nonetheless boosted our seasonal total to 59 inches which is the second highest in the past six years. Only the 61.50 inches that fell in the 2013-14 season was more.
Going back to February 17 of this year when we had a seven-inch snowfall, we only had a grand total of 31 inches for the season. That total appeared as though it would not substantially increase, since February's  weather provided a  glimmer of hope for an even better March.
Those hopes, however, were buried under 28 additional inches of snow that fell from March 2 to April 2.
Storms on March 2, 7, 13 and 21 netted 22 inches prior to yesterday's storm.
Except for a forecast of 60 degrees tomorrow, the 10-day outlook is a chilly one with high temperatures expected to remain below 50.
And, to make things a bit more gloomy, there is a forecast for snow on April 9.

Easter Eggs after Easter

Picture
Southern Living
What do you do with all those Easter Eggs?  You make deviled eggs, of course. Deviled eggs are the ever-humble staple of the Southern dinner table: They’re always dependable, always delicious, and (no matter how many you started with) always gone by the end of the meal.
The ideal deviled egg in my book – and I’m well acquainted with the slippery snack – is piled high with a light, whipped mixture of hard-boiled egg yolk (duh), mayonnaise, a little mustard, and a sprinkling of paprika.
But in order to craft a compliment-worthy deviled egg (and goodness knows your Aunt Martha isn’t always quick to give those), before you even consider how to doctor up the filling, you must start with a solid foundation: a picture-perfect hard-boiled egg.
While I usually don’t care much about what a food looks like, so long as it tastes good, much of the deviled egg’s charm comes from its sunny appearance—its creamy yellow yolk nestled towards the bottom of the egg and tucked smack dab in the center, so that the upper bit of the egg white looks like a crown perched right there on top.
If you don’t boil your eggs properly, though, you could end up with lopsided deviled eggs—or worse, the yolk has slid so far to one side of the egg that you end up with holes.
So how to steer your yolks in the right direction? The trick is all in the boiling process. Put your eggs in a pot and cover them with water—about two inches higher than the tops of the eggs. As the water heats up, stir the eggs gently in a clockwise direction. After a couple minutes of stirring in one direction, switch directions. (It’s the stirring that’s the secret!) Let the water come to a boil, then remove the pot from the heat, cover it, and let the eggs sit for about 12 minutes. Finally, peel the eggs under cold water, and once peeled, prepare the deviled eggs your favorite way.

Book Review
"Revolution Song" by Russell Shorto; review by Katy Albanese
Most of us have learned about the Revolutionary War from history books in elementary and high school. We read about George Washington and King George III of England and the Marquis de Lafayette of France.  But this war was about more than generals and kings; it affected the lives of so many unknown people.
Author Russell Shorto has attempted to explore this war from a different angle; he has chosen six individuals, some famous, most heretofore unknown, to showcase and make real for his readers. An Iroquois warrior, an African slave, a British lord, a shoemaker from Albany, a woman of questionable morals and
General George Washington are all involved in the American Revolution, each of them for a different reason.
The author delves into the stories of each of these six, weaves their lives together and shows how each was affected by the war and how the war changed his/her life. He shows how the decision one person makes, even from across the ocean, can influence events and change history.
This was a compelling, insightful and well written book. I highly recommend it to all who are interested in American history. Find it shelved under 973.3  Sho.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - April 3

Pony Express debuts  1860

On this day in 1860, the first Pony Express mail, traveling by horse and rider relay teams, simultaneously leaves St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. Ten days later, on April 13, the westbound rider and mail packet completed the approximately 1,800-mile journey and arrived in Sacramento, beating the eastbound packet’s arrival in St. Joseph by two days and setting a new standard for speedy mail delivery. Although ultimately short-lived and unprofitable, the Pony Express captivated America’s imagination and helped win federal aid for a more economical overland postal system. It also contributed to the economy of the towns on its route and served the mail-service needs of the American West in the days before the telegraph or an efficient transcontinental railroad.
The Pony Express debuted at a time before radios and telephones, when California, which achieved statehood in 1850, was still largely cut off from the eastern part of the country. Letters sent from New York to the West Coast traveled by ship, which typically took at least a month, or by stagecoach on the recently established Butterfield Express overland route, which could take from three weeks to many months to arrive. Compared to the snail’s pace of the existing delivery methods, the Pony Express’ average delivery time of 10 days seemed like lightning speed.
The Pony Express Company, the brainchild of William H. Russell, William Bradford Waddell and Alexander Majors, owners of a freight business, was set up over 150 relay stations along a pioneer trail across the present-day states of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California. Riders, who were paid approximately $25 per week and carried loads estimated at up to 20 pounds of mail, were changed every 75 to 100 miles, with horses switched out every 10 to 15 miles. Among the riders was the legendary frontiersman and showman William “Buffalo Bill” Cody (1846-1917), who reportedly signed on with the Pony Express at age 14. The company’s riders set their fastest time with Lincoln’s inaugural address, which was delivered in just less than eight days.

Swap Meet
Jacktown-Blue Mountain Antique Gas & Steam Engine Association May Swap Meet is right around the corner! These are first come first serve spots and are $50.00 each this year and money will be collected as you set up. Just a reminder that there are no gun sales allowed. They will be posting more as the time gets closer. Please feel free to share!
The Swap Meet is May 19th and 20th. Spots are available on a first come first serve basis. A spot is 20' X 25' and are $50.00 per spot and allows you both days. You can use more than one spot, but you will need to pay $50.00 for each additional spot you use. If you only want to stay one day the charge is still $50.00. You may start setting up as early as Wednesday May 16th and we will be by to collect at that time. We ask that everyone work on the honor system and if you set up early please do not sell anything until the start of the swap meet. We will have someone come around and collect the money. Our club depends on these funds to keep it running. Please help us keep Jacktown going for years to come. Should you have any questions or if you would like to volunteer please contact Tom Buist at 610-588-7360.
