Oddest Medical Cases - Star In the Eye

Picture
Sometimes, cartoons get it right. A punch to the head left one man in Austria with an actual star in his eye, according to a report published in April in the New England Journal of Medicine.
A strong hit to the face from balls, punches or even airbags can send shockwaves through the eye strong enough to damage the lens and cause a cataract. Doctors say the cataract that appeared in the 55-year-old's eye was only strange because of the intricate star shape.
"Nature has made a beautiful cataract," said Dr. Mark Fromer, an ophthalmologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.
Usually, such cataracts appear as a white-yellow cloud, not a star. In these types of cases, cataract surgery can restore a person's vision.

Clerk Tells Man To Throw Away Lottery Ticket

Picture
April 25 (UPI) -- A Missouri man who won $50,000 from a Powerball drawing said he almost made a terrible mistake by telling the clerk to throw the ticket in the trash.
Kenny McGuire of Clarksville told Missouri Lottery officials he bought a Powerball ticket from Abel's Quik Shop in Louisiana and put it in his wallet.
McGuire said he checked the ticket when he returned to the store 10 days later with his wife, Brandi.
"I handed the ticket to the clerk. He scanned it, and he told me that he couldn't cash the ticket," McGuire said.
"I told him, 'Well, if you can't cash it, throw it away,'" McGuire said.
Thankfully, the clerk explained the problem wasn't that the ticket was a winner, it was that he had won too much to redeem at the store.
The McGuires visited lottery headquarters April 16 to collect their winnings.
"She keeps joking with me, saying things like, 'You had $50,000 in your wallet for 10 days and didn't tell me? How selfish are you?'" McGuire said.
The couple said they plan to use the money to pay off debts and take a family vacation to Six Flags. McGuire said he also plans to share some of the money with the store clerk who sold him the ticket and declined to throw it away.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - April 26

Polio vaccine trials begin  1954

On this day in 1954, the Salk polio vaccine field trials, involving 1.8 million children, begin at the Franklin Sherman Elementary School in McLean, Virginia. Children in the United States, Canada and Finland participated in the trials, which used for the first time the now-standard double-blind method, whereby neither the patient nor attending doctor knew if the inoculation was the vaccine or a placebo. On April 12, 1955, researchers announced the vaccine was safe and effective and it quickly became a standard part of childhood immunizations in America. In the ensuing decades, polio vaccines would all but wipe out the highly contagious disease in the Western Hemisphere.
Polio, known officially as poliomyelitis, is an infectious disease that has existed since ancient times and is caused by a virus. It occurs most commonly in children and can result in paralysis. The disease reached epidemic proportions throughout the first half of the 20th century. During the 1940s and 1950s, polio was associated with the iron lung, a large metal tank designed to help polio victims suffering from respiratory paralysis breathe.
President Franklin Roosevelt was diagnosed with polio in 1921 at the age of 39 and was left paralyzed from the waist down and forced to use leg braces and a wheelchair for the rest of his life. In 1938, Roosevelt helped found the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, later renamed the March of Dimes. The organization was responsible for funding much of the research concerning the disease, including the Salk vaccine trials.

It doesn’t matter if they’ve played all their life or just started yesterday, our camp helps improve their skills. All sorts of drills and practice games will get kids focused on the fundamentals that make athletes great. Plus, we create a positive and encouraging environment that pumps up their confidence and self-esteem.
