Winter Weather Through 1 pm Today
(Updated 6:45am today)
Additional snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are expected, with locally higher totals in the higher elevations of the southern Poconos and northwest New Jersey, the Slate Belt, portions of central, northern and northwest New Jersey and east central, northeast and southeast Pennsylvania. A band of heavy snow has developed in much of the Lehigh Valley northeastward into northern New Jersey, with more heavy snow likely to occur in the southern Poconos in the next couple of hours. Snow will remain moderate to heavy at times through the morning commute before tapering off late this morning. Plan on very difficult travel conditions, including during this morning's commute. Expect poor visibility below one-half mile at times in heavy snow. Road conditions will be highly dependent on snowfall rates and elevation as rates greater than one inch per hour and slightly colder temperatures in the hilly terrain will allow for untreated roads to become snow covered. High temperatures this afternoon in the 40s will lead to rapid melting.
SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
Bands of moderate to locally heavy snow will continue to form and impact the southern Poconos, Lehigh Valley, the western suburbs of Philadelphia, and northern New Jersey this morning. Snow is accumulating on roads, and travel is treacherous this morning. Please give yourself plenty of extra time for your morning commute.

‘Cashless’ Tolling Expands Soon on PA Turnpike Cashless tolling pilot projects on the Findlay Connector section of the Southern Beltway (PA Turnpike Route 576) in Washington and Allegheny counties and at the Clarks Summit and Keyser Avenue tolling points in Lackawanna County on the Northeastern Extension (Interstate 476) will be implemented at those locations on Sunday, April 29. “Cashless” means there will be no coin baskets or toll collectors along the roadway; cash will no longer be accepted. Motorists with E-ZPass will not notice a difference and will continue to use the process with which they are familiar. For motorists who do not have E-ZPass, an image of their license plate is captured as they travel through a cashless facility. Using the address on file with PennDOT, a toll bill is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle — a cashless procedure known as “PA Turnpike TOLL BY PLATE.” With the conversion of these two locations, the turnpike will have four cashless tolling locations, with existing locations at the Beaver Valley Expressway (Toll 376) and near the turnpike bridge over the Delaware River. ![]() These children are eager to find Easter Eggs hidden on the Weona Park min golf course during the Lookout Fire Co. Curious Easter Monday Bottle Kicking in UK![]() In Leicestershire, UK, the villages of Hallaton and Medbourne hold a bottle kicking match. It has been held at least since the early eighteenth century, but its roots may be in pagan times.
Local lore claims that the custom began when two ladies of Hallaton were saved from a raging bull by a startled hare, distracting the bull from its charge. They showed their gratitude to God for sending the hare by donating money to the church on the understanding that every Easter Monday, the vicar would provide a hare pie, twelve penny loaves, and 2 barrels of beer for the poor of the village. The Hallaton villagers would fight each other for the food and drink, and on one occasion, the residents of the neighbouring village of Medbourne joined the fray and stole the beer.[citation needed] The Hallatonians cooperated to retrieve the spoils, thus beginning the village rivalry that continues to this day. The event starts with the three bottles and a hare pie, which are actually wooden barrels, a parade through the two villages. Two of the barrels are filled with beer. The third is actually solid wood. The actual game consists of the two teams taking turns to get the three barrels across two streams a mile apart, by any means possible. The game is quite rough and participants can leave the game for refreshments at any time. The winning village gets to take the filled barrels to the local pub. Enjoy Brick Bingo at Portland Fire Co. For additional information please contact: Karen Brewer @ 610-588- 8615 Book Review "Revolution Song" by Russell Shorto; review by Katy Albanese Most of us have learned about the Revolutionary War from history books in elementary and high school. We read about George Washington and King George III of England and the Marquis de Lafayette of France. But this war was about more than generals and kings; it affected the lives of so many unknown people. Author Russell Shorto has attempted to explore this war from a different angle; he has chosen six individuals, some famous, most heretofore unknown, to showcase and make real for his readers. An Iroquois warrior, an African slave, a British lord, a shoemaker from Albany, a woman of questionable morals and General George Washington are all involved in the American Revolution, each of them for a different reason. The author delves into the stories of each of these six, weaves their lives together and shows how each was affected by the war and how the war changed his/her life. He shows how the decision one person makes, even from across the ocean, can influence events and change history. This was a compelling, insightful and well written book. I highly recommend it to all who are interested in American history. Find it shelved under 973.3 Sho. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - April 2Pope John Paul II Dies 2005 On this day in 2005, John Paul II, history’s most well-traveled pope and the first non-Italian to hold the position since the 16th century, dies at his home in the Vatican. Six days later, two million people packed Vatican City for his funeral, said to be the biggest funeral in history. John Paul II was born Karol Jozef Wojtyla in Wadowice, Poland, 35 miles southwest of Krakow, in 1920. After high school, the future pope enrolled at Krakow’s Jagiellonian University, where he studied philosophy and literature and performed in a theater group. During World War II, Nazis occupied Krakow and closed the university, forcing Wojtyla to seek work in a quarry and, later, a chemical factory. By 1941, his mother, father, and only brother had all died, leaving him the sole surviving member of his family. Although Wojtyla had been involved in the church his whole life, it was not until 1942 that he began seminary training. When the war ended, he returned to school at Jagiellonian to study theology, becoming an ordained priest in 1946. He went on to complete two doctorates and became a professor of moral theology and social ethics. On July 4, 1958, at the age of 38, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Krakow by Pope Pius XII. He later became the city s archbishop, where he spoke out for religious freedom while the church began the Second Vatican Council, which would revolutionize Catholicism. He was made a cardinal in 1967, taking on the challenges of living and working as a Catholic priest in communist Eastern Europe. Once asked if he feared retribution from communist leaders, he replied, “I m not afraid of them. They are afraid of me.” ![]()
