Flash Flood Advisory Through This Afternoon
The Flash Flood Watch continues for  the Slate Belt and adjacent portions of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. A line of strong thunderstorms is expected to move through the area early this morning. Widespread rainfall totals of one to three inches are forecast, with locally higher amounts possible with the strongest storms. The storms will likely move out of the area by Monday afternoon.  The areas of greatest risk are poor-drainage and urban locations where rapid runoff may cause localized flash flooding. Quickly responding small streams may also experience flooding in areas receiving the heaviest rainfall. The storms are expected to move through the area just before or during the morning commute. Motorists should be prepared for torrential downpours and potential flooding as the storms move through.

What is Patriots' Day?

Picture
If  you’re not from Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine—or even Wisconsin—you may not be familiar with the Patriots’ Day holiday. In Massachusetts and Maine, this is a holiday that is celebrated on the third Monday of April (April 19th, elsewhere). But why? The reason lies with two of the most famous and important battles in American history.

Originally, Patriots’ Day was a day set aside to commemorate the Battles of Lexington and Concord, fought on April 19, 1775, which started the Revolutionary War. These two significant skirmishes, which resulted in the colonists defeating the British, marked the first step toward American independence.
Though the Revolutionary War started in 1775, the holiday itself wasn’t observed until 1894. This was when the Lexington Historical Society asked the Massachusetts state legislature of to officially mark April 19th to honor the battle. Thus the very first Patriots’ Day was celebrated in 1894. Maine was the next to make the holiday official in 1907. Connecticut will celebrate its first Patriots’ Day in 2018.
There are lots of traditions, for instance, attending war reenactments and visiting battle sites to mark the day. But some of the biggest celebrations of Patriots’ Day have to do with sporting events, particularly marathons; most prominently, the Boston Marathon.
That leads to the next question: What do marathons have to do with the Battles of Lexington and Concord? The answer is through name association. Marathons are named for an ancient Greek battle that happened in 490 B.C., the Battle of Marathon. The struggle between Americans and the British has been likened to the Battle of Marathon, in which the outnumbered Athenians fought invading Persians, thus winning their freedom. Because of this, marathons are not only tests of endurance, but they also symbolize the fight for liberty and freedom. And that is why the most popular way to mark Patriots’ Day is to attend or participate in a marathon!

Don’t confuse Patriots’ Day with Patriot Day, which marks the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, or National Patriot’s Day, which is celebrated in Canada.

 Odd Medical Conditions:
Energy Drink Heart Attack

Picture
What could cause a healthy 26-year-old to suffer a heart attack? Drinking nearly a dozen energy drinks a day, every day, that's what.
A man in Texas told doctors that he regularly consumed eight to 10 caffeine-laden energy drinks a day before suffering a heart attack. He also smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for two years prior to the incident, according to a report published in the journal Case Reports in Emergency Medicine in February 2015. [5 Health Problems Linked to Energy Drinks]
It's possible that the excessive amount of caffeine in these drinks, as well as other potentially harmful substances, may have reduced blood flow in the man's coronary blood vessel, causing a blood clot to form and ultimately resulting in a heart attack. The report's authors also noted that smoking may have led to the constriction of the man's coronary artery.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - April 16

Hallucinogenic effects of LSD discovered  1943

In Basel, Switzerland, Albert Hofmann, a Swiss chemist working at the Sandoz pharmaceutical research laboratory, accidentally consumes LSD-25, a synthetic drug he had created in 1938 as part of his research into the medicinal value of lysergic acid compounds. After taking the drug, formally known as lysergic acid diethylamide, Dr. Hofmann was disturbed by unusual sensations and hallucinations. In his notes, he related the experience:
“Last Friday, April 16, 1943, I was forced to interrupt my work in the laboratory in the middle of the afternoon and proceed home, being affected by a remarkable restlessness, combined with a slight dizziness. At home I lay down and sank into a not unpleasant, intoxicated-like condition characterized by an extremely stimulated imagination. In a dreamlike state, with eyes closed (I found the daylight to be unpleasantly glaring), I perceived an uninterrupted stream of fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colors. After some two hours this condition faded away.”
After intentionally taking the drug again to confirm that it had caused this strange physical and mental state, Dr. Hofmann published a report announcing his discovery, and so LSD made its entry into the world as a hallucinogenic drug. Widespread use of the so-called “mind-expanding” drug did not begin until the 1960s, when counterculture figures such as Albert M. Hubbard, Timothy Leary and Ken Kesey publicly expounded on the benefits of using LSD as a recreational drug. The manufacture, sale, possession, and use of LSD, known to cause negative reactions in some of those who take it, were made illegal in the United States in 1965.
