Odd Medical Conditions - Toothy brain tumor It's not entirely unusual for a 4-month-old baby to have a few teeth, unless those teeth are lodged in the baby's brain.
An infant in Maryland had teeth form in his brain as a result of a specific type of rare brain tumor. Doctors were able to remove the tumor and the boy made a full recovery, according to a report published in the New England Journal of Medicine in February 2014. Doctors suspected something might be going on inside the boy's brain when his head appeared to grow faster than was usual for his age. A scan of the child's brain revealed a tumor that contained what looked like teeth normally found in the lower jaw. And indeed, when doctors removed the tumor they extracted several fully formed teeth with it. While teeth do sometimes appear in tumors, the type of tumor removed from the infant's brain — a craniopharyngioma — wasn't known to host these strange additions. . Strange & Wacky Taxes As the old Ben Franklin quote goes, “Only two things are certain in life: death and taxes,” and with Tax Day right around the corner, most of us are thinking about the latter. History has proved that nothing is immune to taxation—it seems almost everything has been taxed at one point or another. So we thought we’d take a look at some of the strangest —and wackiest— taxes imposed on the public throughout history.
In the 18th century, Great Britain needed a sneaky way to collect taxes on the wealthy without looking like they were collecting taxes on the wealthy. So they placed a tax on windows! The logic behind this was that poor people only had one or two windows in their homes while the rich had more lavish homes, sometimes with dozens of windows. The window tax wasn’t the only time the English tried to find creative ways to tax the wealthy. In 1712, lawmakers implemented a tax on printed wallpaper, which builders immediately circumvented by hanging plain wallpaper, then painting the design on later. Crafty! In 1784 England, there was also a tax on hats. Hatters promptly stopped using the word “hat,” which led to a tax on anything that could be worn on the head, including wigs. The British government set a tax in 1795 on the powders that kept wigs looking white and smelling fresh. The result, unsurprisingly, was that wigs quickly went out of style. Everything’s bigger in Texas, right? Well, if you want to be a cowboy, and wear the big belt buckle with the ornate designs, it will cost you. Because today, in Texas, there is a tax on belt buckles. You can buy the belt, boots, hat, and all the rest of the gear tax-free but according to Texas law, the buckle itself is considered an accessory, not essential clothing, and therefore subject to a 6.25% sales tax. Tsar Peter I of Russia, famously known as Peter the Great, was a big proponent of social modernization. He ruled between 1682 and 1721, and during that reign, he implemented many standards to help Russians keep up with their European counterparts. One of those standards was the beard tax. In order for a man to keep his beard under this law, he had to pay a tax of 100 rubles. Because of this, the clean-shaven look so common in Europe at the time became the new style in Russia. Studies have found that methane released from cows may account for up to 18% of Europe’s greenhouse gasses, so several European countries impose a tax on farmers in order to curb the bovine-fueled gas epidemic. Denmark takes the brunt of it — each flatulent cow costs farmers as much as $110. No matter where you look — state tax laws around the United States or among the tax laws of other countries — you’ll probably find a few wacky taxes here and there. In most cases, these laws were written to creatively—but fairly—tax citizens. But in some instances, these laws were designed specifically to stop practices that governments viewed as undesirable or to put an end to fads that were deemed antiquated. BAHS Spring Musical

Robinson broke the color barrier in a sport that had been segregated for more than 50 years. Exactly 50 years later, on April 15, 1997, Robinson’s groundbreaking career was honored and his uniform number, 42, was retired from Major League Baseball by Commissioner Bud Selig in a ceremony attended by over 50,000 fans at New York City’s Shea Stadium. Robinson’s was the first-ever number retired by all teams in the league. Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born January 31, 1919, in Cairo, Georgia, to a family of sharecroppers. Growing up, he excelled at sports and attended the University of California at Los Angeles, where he was the first athlete to letter in four varsity sports: baseball, basketball, football and track. After financial difficulties forced Robinson to drop out of UCLA, he joined the army in 1942 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. After protesting instances of racial discrimination during his military service, Robinson was court-martialed in 1944. Ultimately, though, he was honorably discharged. After the army, Robinson played for a season in the Negro American League. In 1945, Branch Rickey, general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, recruited Robinson, who was known for his integrity and intelligence as well as his talent, to join one of the club’s farm teams. In 1947, Robinson was called up to the Majors and soon became a star infielder and outfielder for the Dodgers, as well as the National League’s Rookie of the Year. In 1949, the right-hander was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player and league batting champ. Robinson played on the National League All-Star team from 1949 through 1954 and led the Dodgers to six National League pennants and one World Series, in 1955. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962, his first year of eligibility.
