Odd Medical Conditions - Fish bone in the Eye
Nothing ruins a day at the beach quite like getting a fish bone stuck in your eyeball. Unfortunately, that's what happened to a beachgoer visiting the Red Sea in 2015.
The 52-year-old tourist was swimming in the Red Seawhen he collided with a school of fish. Not long after the incident, the man developed a swollen and droopy eyelid that wouldn't heal. A doctor's visit revealed he had an area of inflammation called a granuloma on his eyelid, and the patient underwent surgery to correct the issue.
But a granuloma wasn't the only thing that doctors removed from the erstwhile swimmer's eyeball during the surgery. "Two tubular structures" were also removed from the man's eyelid, according to a report published in the New England Journal of Medicine in September 2015.
A biologist was called in to examine these strange specimens, which turned out to be the jawbones of a halfbeak, a fish that dwells in shallow coastal waters. The fish bones had immobilized the muscles controlling the man's eyelid, causing it to droop. But the droopy-eyed swimmer recovered shortly after his surgery

Be Prepared for Spring Storms
Spring is here, which means severe weather can arrive at a moment’s notice, no matter where you live. Wind, rain, hail, and other elements can cause extensive damage to your home and property, so it’s always a good idea to be prepared for what Mother Nature throws your way.
Here are a few simple steps you can take to proactively protect your home and property from damaging spring storms:
Take a walk around your property often to see if there is any damage — whether by Old Man Winter or summer mayhem, and make necessary repairs. Small damage to roofs and chimneys that occurred during winter can turn into big headaches after any severe storm. Make sure gutters are clear and draining properly. Consider investing in a chimney cap — they’re great at keeping out moisture from heavy rains, which can damage stainless steel liners, or cause mold.
Remove dead branches that could end up being dangerous projectiles in a severe storm and cause damage not covered by your homeowner’s insurance. Are any hovering near the power source to your home? Most arborists recommend that trees and limbs be at least 10 feet away from your home. Hire one to come out and identify any problem areas. Or enlist a knowledgeable friend.
Spring runoff, and torrential rain storms can all result in flooded basements. Make sure your pumps are running smoothly so they can do their job when you need them.
Your backyard oasis can turn into a danger zone in a severe storm. High winds can turn unsecured items into missiles. If you’ve received a warning that a severe storm in approaching, move these items — patio furniture, lawn chairs, propane tanks and grills, flags and poles, bird feeders, and potted or hanging plants — inside your home, shed, or garage if possible. If you can’t bring furniture or heavy items in, try using a rope or garden hose to tie them down securely.
And don’t forget this important step! Familiarize yourself with your insurance coverage. Every homeowner should know exactly what their policy covers, or doesn’t cover, so there are no surprises in the event of storm damage. Damage to your swimming pool, for example, may not be covered.

- Think camping — and either get a camp stove (always use it outside), or use the grill to cook if you’ve lost power. If you have a lot in the freezer and it’s going to be a long time without power, you may just want to invite the neighbors over and grill up as much as possible before it goes bad.
- Keep your cell phone charged before the power goes out!
Heritage Center Presentation
The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on tonight at 7:00 PM. Speaker for the evening will be Mr.
Joel Hoffner who will present: “Genealogy Tricks, Traps, Trails, Tribulations and Triumphs”. Mr. Hoffner is a Research Assistant at the Sigal Museum in Easton and is a long time genealogist. This program is in conjunction with the Center’s new exhibit in the Council Chamber; “Who Do You think We Are”? This year long event explores the detective story behind everyone’s family tree. Using clues from Slate Belt stories, the exhibit follows families back to their roots, much like the popular TV shows, “Finding Your Roots” and “Who Do You think You Are”?
Mr. Hoffner will provide answers to those seeking to trace their roots while avoiding pit-falls along the way. The event is free and open to the public. The Heritage Center is located at 30 North 1 st Street, Bangor, PA.

Two adult eagles have been frequenting the site with nesting material.

The Civil War begins 1864
The bloodiest four years in American history begin when Confederate shore batteries under General P.G.T. Beauregard open fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina’s Charleston Bay. During the next 34 hours, 50 Confederate guns and mortars launched more than 4,000 rounds at the poorly supplied fort. On April 13, U.S. Major Robert Anderson surrendered the fort. Two days later, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for 75,000 volunteer soldiers to quell the Southern “insurrection.”
As early as 1858, the ongoing conflict between North and South over the issue of slavery had led Southern leadership to discuss a unified separation from the United States. By 1860, the majority of the slave states were publicly threatening secession if the Republicans, the anti-slavery party, won the presidency. Following Republican Abraham Lincoln’s victory over the divided Democratic Party in November 1860, South Carolina immediately initiated secession proceedings. On December 20, the South Carolina legislature passed the “Ordinance of Secession,” which declared that “the Union now subsisting between South Carolina and other states, under the name of the United States of America, is hereby dissolved.” After the declaration, South Carolina set about seizing forts, arsenals, and other strategic locations within the state. Within six weeks, five more Southern states–Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana–had followed South Carolina’s lead.
In February 1861, delegates from those states convened to establish a unified government. Jefferson Davis of Mississippi was subsequently elected the first president of the Confederate States of America. When Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated on March 4, 1861, a total of seven states (Texas had joined the pack) had seceded from the Union, and federal troops held only Fort Sumter in South Carolina, Fort Pickens off the Florida coast, and a handful of minor outposts in the South. Four years after the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter, the Confederacy was defeated at the total cost of 620,000 Union and Confederate soldiers dead.

Heritage Center Presentation
The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Thursday, April 12th @ 7:00 PM. Speaker for the evening will be Mr.
Joel Hoffner who will present: “Genealogy Tricks, Traps, Trails, Tribulations and Triumphs”. Mr. Hoffner is a Research Assistant at the Sigal Museum in Easton and is a long time genealogist. This program is in conjunction with the Center’s new exhibit in the Council Chamber; “Who Do You think We Are”? This year long event explores the detective story behind everyone’s family tree. Using clues from Slate Belt stories, the exhibit follows families back to their roots, much like the popular TV shows, “Finding Your Roots” and “Who Do You think You Are”?

Come Friday, April 13 at 6 PM - 11 PM to Wind Gap Legion Post 724 217 N Broadway, Wind Gap, and join other law enforcement, local community members, and up-standers for a night of inspiration and community support. We are looking to show all local law enforcement and Mr. Nolan Kemmerer that we support them. This night will be filled with support, fun and laughs. Our goal is to raise money for the “Stop the Bleed Campaign” and Mr. Nolan Kemmerer.

Join guest speaker Brad Kreider of the Pennsylvania Game Commission as he talks about one of the least understood creatures in the state. Registration is required.

“Who Do You Think We Are?” opens to the public Saturday, April 14, 2018, 12-3 PM and will continue April – October, Sat. and Sun 12 -3 and November-March 2019 Sundays 12 -3. In conjunction with the exhibit, the Heritage Center will host two related programs:

A hands on workshop “Finding Branches on Your Family Trees’ is scheduled for April 21, 9:30 AM-12:00 Noon. Join experts Cheryl Statham, from the Quiet Valley Farm Museum, Cindy Smith, local genealogist, Sharon Oxford Gothard from the Easton Library History Room and Renee Drago, a Northampton County Archivist for a morning of discovery. Spring Opening of Slate Belt Heritage Center
The Slate Belt Heritage Center (SBHC), located at 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, PA will be celebrating its 19th Anniversary of incorporation in conjunction with its’ Spring Opening on Saturday, April 14 from 12 to 3pm.
Bear Swamp Day Trip
A Bear Swamp Day Trip will be held at Bear Swamp Park/Archery Complex, 1300 Lake Minsi Drive, Bangor PA 18013 Saturday, April 14 at 10 am. Length: 2 miles Duration: 1.5 hours.
Bring binoculars/camera to capture spring wildlife and plants. Bring bug repellent, sun hat and sun screen. Bathrooms: None.

Celtic Cultural Alliance is excited to announce an Ogham Art Tile Class, led by Nancy Lewis. This workshop takes place in two sessions: April 18th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and April 25th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m..
Come join us for a fun night of exploring the Ogham alphabet, and then create your own design in a clay slab. After it is fired, come back to class one week later and glaze it. The ceramic piece can be picked up at Celtic Cultural Alliance after May 2.
The Ogham alphabet was used to represent the Primitive Irish language using a series of perpendicular and intersecting lines, written vertically, and then read from bottom to top. This class is suitable for ages 16 and up.
Instructor Nancy Lewis is a talented artist who continually inspires as students as an art teacher at Liberty High School. A graduate of Kutztown University, she enjoys ceramics, watercolor and pen and ink. She resides in Bethlehem along with her husband, George, and their children.

Waste Management presents Grand Central Sanitary Landfill’s Earth Day Festival April 22 from 11am to 2pm at Grand Central Environmental Education Center, 891 Grand Central Road, Pen Argyl. Look for Education Center sign at end of driveway; Watch for Signs on Pen Argyl Road.
Eagle Scout Justin Anthony from Troop 33 will be honored. There will be presentations by Bear Mountain Butterflies and PT Reptiles where you will be able to hold live reptiles and butterflies.
Activities include Recycling Games, a Nature Hike, Composting Discussion and even a Waste Management CNG Truck for kids to take their photo with and more! A bake sale and snack tables will be set up for purchase by the Scouts. Little Creek BBQ will be selling HOT Delicious Sandwiches!
There will be free fun and giveaways for the kids.
Support the Plainfield Township Lions Club and bring any eyeglasses that are no longer in need to recycle! Color for Kids will be collecting color!For more information contact Adrienne Fors, Community Relations at [email protected] or phone 585.472.2075.

Jacktown-Blue Mountain Antique Gas & Steam Engine Association May Swap Meet is right around the corner! These are first come first serve spots and are $50.00 each this year and money will be collected as you set up. Just a reminder that there are no gun sales allowed. They will be posting more as the time gets closer. Please feel free to share!
The Swap Meet is May 19th and 20th. Spots are available on a first come first serve basis. A spot is 20' X 25' and are $50.00 per spot and allows you both days. You can use more than one spot, but you will need to pay $50.00 for each additional spot you use. If you only want to stay one day the charge is still $50.00. You may start setting up as early as Wednesday May 16th and we will be by to collect at that time. We ask that everyone work on the honor system and if you set up early please do not sell anything until the start of the swap meet. We will have someone come around and collect the money. Our club depends on these funds to keep it running. Please help us keep Jacktown going for years to come. Junior Week is one of the best weeks of the year at Tuscarora. It is an exciting week of camp while also teaching the gospel story for kids. The impact of this week will last a lifetime.
Designed especially for those finished with 2-6 grades, Junior Week campers experience outdoor activities, costume parties, fun music, drama skits, crafts and more! Your child will do more during Junior Week than any other week of the year!

The Bangor Quarry Hoist has booked its first event! On Thursday, July 12, 2018, at 7 PM, it will operate for the Slate Belt Heritage Center's monthly program, which will occur at the Hoist. The program will detail the restoration of the hoist and feature a live demonstration. Although work on the hoist and pavilion is still underway, progress is so advanced that we can look forward to this event next summer.
