Slate Belt Residential Façade Upgrades
Slate Belt Rising has created a Residential Façade Improvement Program which is designed to help improve the exterior appearance and condition of residential properties within the boroughs of Bangor, Pen Argyl, Wind Gap and Portland.
The program’s goals are to maintain historic and architectural integrity, improve neighborhood appearance, and help property owners make exterior repairs to their homes, while increasing property values for all borough residents. Applications are now being accepted. The Nazareth Area Garden Club will hold it's 15th Annual Flower and Garden Show on Friday Sept. 8th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday the 9th, from 10:00 a.m. to 300 p.m. at the Schoeneck Moravian Church , 316 B Broad St. Ext in Nazareth. This year's theme is Jungle Fever and will feature Floral Arrangements in 10 categories. In addition, both annual and perennial specimens will be judged, as well as houseplants, fruits and vegetables. Special club projects include Rosemary and a beautiful red Geranium grown by members since May. A Container Garden in a re-purposed container will also be judged by the audience. Mosaic bird baths are also featured. Jack Jones will be there with his birdhouses made form recycled barn wood. Be sure to visit our raffle table and plant sale. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - September 8Ford pardons Nixon 1974 In a controversial executive action, President Gerald Ford pardons his disgraced predecessor Richard M. Nixon for any crimes he may have committed or participated in while in office. Ford later defended this action before the House Judiciary Committee, explaining that he wanted to end the national divisions created by the Watergate scandal. The Watergate scandal erupted after it was revealed that Nixon and his aides had engaged in illegal activities during his reelection campaign–and then attempted to cover up evidence of wrongdoing. With impeachment proceedings underway against him in Congress, Nixon bowed to public pressure and became the first American president to resign. At noon on August 9, Nixon officially ended his term, departing with his family in a helicopter from the White House lawn. Minutes later, Vice President Gerald R. Ford was sworn in as the 38th president of the United States in the East Room of the White House. After taking the oath of office, President Ford spoke to the nation in a television address, declaring, “My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over.” Ford, the first president who came to the office through appointment rather than election, had replaced Spiro Agnew as vice president only eight months before. In a political scandal independent of the Nixon administration’s wrongdoings in the Watergate affair, Agnew had been forced to resign in disgrace after he was charged with income tax evasion and political corruption. Exactly one month after Nixon announced his resignation, Ford issued the former president a “full, free and absolute” pardon for any crimes he committed while in office. The pardon was widely condemned at the time.

Bus Trip to National Civil War Museum
Join the Slate Belt Heritage Center for their bus trip to the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA, on Saturday, September 16, 2017. The bus will leave at 8:00 AM from Weiss Market, Route 512 in Bangor, and will return at 5:00 PM. Cost per individual is $95.00 which includes bus ticket and admission ticket into the museum. This is the only museum that tells the entire Civil War story. Local Civil War expert and the National Civil War Museum educator Dane DiFebo will host a special presentation for the tour. See exhibits, visit with re-enactors on the museum grounds, attend Hari Jones program on the United State Colored Troops in the South from 1865-1870 and much more. People at Columcille will begin gathering for the 'Full Corn Moon' or 'Barley Moon' in the circle of stones at 7:00pm on Wednesday, September 6 with the Celebration beginning at 7:30pm. The Gathering is open to all who feel called to participate in welcoming and honoring Grandmother Moon and her healing energies. They welcome all who wish to bring their drums, flutes and other musical instruments. Please bring any poem, song, chant or story you would like to share as well as your crystals, gems, etc. for cleansing by the Full Moon energies. The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Thursday, September 14, 2017 @ 7:00 PM. Speaker for the evening will be James Gloria, Founder/Director of Totts Gap Arts Institute. He will be screening Lois Solver’s short film: “From the Earth: A tribute to Slate Belt Heritage and Culture”. Produced by the center’s film program, the documentary gives an overview of the area’s defining industry, with interviews of both former and current slate workers (“Slaters”). Historians Melissa Hough and Mike Piersa provide a knowledgeable historical perspective adding to the archival footage. The film was selected for screening at the Greater Lehigh Valley Film Festival and the Southside Film Festival in Bethlehem. The event is free and open to the public. Join the Slate Belt Heritage Center for their bus trip to the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA, on Saturday, September 16, 2017. Locally, the Friends of the Bangor Public Library, are a vibrant and industrious group of volunteers. As a means of garnering funds for the library the Friends conduct the following events each year: two “Used Books Sales” one at the Bee Hive the first week in May and at the Blue Valley Farm Show, two “Brunch with the Authors” featuring local literary artists, The Annual Downtown “Duck Race”, “Breakfast with Santa” the first Saturday in December, a Fall “Bake Sale”, and “Wine Tasting” event in November. The Friends also produce a Newsletter four times a year. 100% of the proceeds they raise are given to the Bangor library for operating expenses. This year, the Friends, are also initiating a major project to upgrade the children’s reading section. The Friends meet the 4th Thursday @ 7:00 PM and invite anyone who is interested in joining to attend. Associate members are also accepted to help with the fund raising projects.
