THIS DAY IN HISTORY - September 27
John Adams appointed to negotiate peace terms with British 1779
On this day in 1779, the Continental Congress appoints John Adams to travel to France as minister plenipotentiary in charge of negotiating treaties of peace and commerce with Great Britain during the Revolutionary War.
Adams had traveled to Paris in 1778 to negotiate an alliance with France, but had been unceremoniously dismissed when Congress chose Benjamin Franklinas sole commissioner. Soon after returning to Massachusetts in mid-1779, Adams was elected as a delegate to the state convention to draw up a new constitution; he was involved in these duties when he learned of his new diplomatic commission. Accompanied by his young sons John Quincy and Charles, Adams sailed for Europe that November aboard the French ship Sensible, which sprang a leak early in the voyage and missed its original destination (Brest), instead landing at El Ferrol, in northwestern Spain. After an arduous journey by mule train across the Pyrenees and into France, Adams and his group reached Paris in early February 1780.
While in Paris, Adams wrote to Congress almost daily (sometimes several letters a day) sharing news about British politics, British and French naval activities and his general perspective on European affairs. Conditions were unfavorable for peace at the time, as the war was going badly for the Continental Army, and the blunt and sometimes confrontational Adams clashed with the French government, especially the powerful Foreign Minister Charles Gravier, Comte de Vergennes. In mid-June, Adams began a correspondence with Vergennes in which he pushed for French naval assistance, antagonizing both Vergennes and Franklin, who brought the matter to the attention of Congress.

Book review
"The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women" book by Kate Moore review by Nancy Chuss
After the Curies discovered radium, jewelers realized its glow-in-the-dark property makes it perfect for watch dials. Also, when WWI broke out, the planes
all needed glow-in-the-dark dials to fly at night. Young girls signed up for jobs painting the radium onto the dials. They were taught to dip their brushes into the
radium, point the brushes by putting it to their lips, and then paint the dials: "dip lip paint" They loved how the radium dust made their hair light up. They
would even enter a dark room and see that they all lit up. They were all friends and had fun. Then the "Radium Girls" began to get sick. Their teeth would fall
out. The company denied any dangers from the radium.
The problems the girls went through were horrible, and the company was defiant. This story only gets worse, and it's true. I guarantee you will get a new view of women in the workplace and corporate evil.

Jacobsburg Speaker Series
Dr. Megan Rothenberger will speak on "Assessment of Dam Removal" Friday, October 12 at 7:00pm to 8:00pm. The proposed removal of multiple small dams along the lower Bushkill Creek has provided a valuable opportunity for multidisciplinary teams of Lafayette college faculty and students to evaluate the benefits and risks of stream restoration. This research is especially important since fewer than 10% of dam removals in the last century were accompanied by scientific study. Megan Rothenberger, Assistant Professor of Biology and Environmental Science at Lafayette College, will present a summary of the ongoing pre-dam removal research, which includes almost 8 years of water quality monitoring, surveys of freshwater mussels, analysis of heavy metals in legacy sediments and associated toxicity assays to assess potential risks to organisms downstream. Registration is required.
