Help Track Bald Eagle Population The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking for the public’s help to track the state’s growing bald eagle population. After reaching a low of just three nesting bald eagle pairs in the Commonwealth in the early 1980s, officials now estimate there are more than 300 nesting pairs here.
While bald eagles are no longer listed as a threatened species in Pennsylvania, they are still protected by the U.S. Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits taking of the birds, nests or eggs. If you spot a bald eagle nest, please use proper etiquette to avoid disturbing the birds. To review bald eagle nest guidelines, or to report your nest sighting to the game commission, click here. Tax Relief for PennsylvaniansBy Rep. Joe Emrick (R-Bangor) Relief from onerous taxes can help spur economic and job growth, and ultimately, ensure our communities thrive. Recently, the General Assembly passed into law legislation to provide tax relief to our volunteer organizations, farmers and families. The legislation eliminates the inheritance tax on children when they suffer the loss of a loved one, helps our volunteer fire departments and nonprofits to stay afloat, and encourages and supports family farming. Under the new law, children age 21 or younger who suffer the loss of a parent will no longer have to pay the state’s 4.5% inheritance tax. Act 13 of 2019 reduces the inheritance tax rate to 0% for the transfer of property to or for the use of a child 21 years of age or younger from a natural parent, adoptive parent or a stepparent of the child. The inheritance tax portion of Act 13 takes effect in January. A prior law implemented a 0% tax rate on transfers from a child 21 years of age or younger to his or her parent. Act 13 also includes a provision to exempt volunteer fire departments from collecting and remitting sales tax when selling food and beverages for fundraising efforts. At a time when volunteer fire department budgets have dipped dangerously low, this provision will enable them to raise funds without worrying about the burden of collecting and remitting sales tax. In continuing to help Pennsylvania’s agriculture industry grow and thrive, Act 13 exempts the sales tax for building materials and supplies used for the construction or repair of an agricultural animal housing facility. The bill also creates an exclusion of the Realty Transfer Tax of real estate subject to an agricultural conservation easement established under the Agricultural Area Security Law to a qualified beginning farmer. These measures will help preserve farms and increase agricultural operations in Pennsylvania by lowering building costs and helping farmers be more competitive. To learn more about these tax relief measures and other recent legislation passed by the General Assembly, visit www.pahousegop.com/ Hunger is an Everyday Reality The Allentown Rescue Mission works every day to provide meals, shelter, and other services to our local homeless population. As we approach autumn and the holidays, there are several other important dates that are approaching.

The mobile-friendly, online application site, available at votesPA.com/ApplyAbsentee, will go live on Monday, Sept. 16, the first day that registered voters may apply for absentee ballots for the Nov. 5 election. When an applicant completes the online form, the information is forwarded directly to the appropriate county elections office for processing. The applicant will then be provided with a ballot that must be completed and either mailed or hand-delivered to the appropriate county election office by the deadline, which is 5 p.m. on the Friday before the election, or Nov. 1 this year. The online application system will be accessible for all domestic Pennsylvania voters this year and to military and overseas voters by 2020. Absentee ballots may be cast by individuals with illnesses or disabilities, individuals who will be away from their municipality on business on Election Day, and Pennsylvania students attending out-of-state colleges or universities, among others. Youth Day in Pen Argyl.........Main Street Market Re-opening in October According to a news release from the Slate Belt Chamber of Commerce, the Main Street Market will reopen sometime in October 2019. Property owners, Jamie Townsend et al say that they have reached an agreement with Duane and Nicole Smith to bring the Market back to life on North Main Street in Bangor.
Smith was a "founder" of the original Main Street Market over 25 years ago and later opened his own market in Portland. That market, unfortunately, was damaged by two floods, forcing its closure in 2008. "We look forward to bringing back the same level of service that Main Street Market has always been known for," said Duane Smith. "Patrons can expect to see some familiar faces back at the store (since) a number of employees have already agreed to come back to work." Townsend says, "we knew Duane was a natural fit. He not only brings industry knowledge and expertise, he (also) is a known and trusted professional in our community. We're excited (that) he's agreed to take on the Market. "We always realized that this Market is a vital part of the Bangor community,"Townsend added. "We thank everyone for their patience as Duane and Nicole do the hard work to get the store reopened. In the meantime, we are making arrangements for building and site improvements, including repaving the parking lot which were always planned." Slate Belt Rivalry 100th Game
