Families First 17th Annual 5-K/Walk 
Families First is celebrating its 17th Anniversary serving residents in the Pen Argyl Area School District. Come join them for their 17th Annual 5-K Race & 1 Mile Fun Walk on Saturday, September 28, rain or shine.
Registration for the race/walk will begin at the Wind Gap Borough Park at 7:45 a.m. with the race starting at 9:00 a.m. All proceeds will go to the support the Adopt-A-Family Holiday programs and activities provided by Families First. “PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE” in the Pen Argyl Area School District. Pre-registration is open until 2 pm on Friday, September 27 at a fee of $20.00 per person or $40.00 for a family with three or more registrants. On Race day the fee will be $25 per person and $50 for a family with three or more registrants. There is a special discount registration for students only $15. The Largest Youth Group/Team/Organization pre-registered will receive a Pizza Party. Awards will be presented to the overall top Male and Female, top Masters Male and Female, and top 3 finishers in each of the eight age categories. Entry includes a quality T-shirt for the first 100 registered, bagels, water, door prizes, and the opportunity to support a worthwhile cause. The one-mile fun walk is non-competitive. Gearing Up for Kindergarten
The Bangor Area School District will be offering the fall Gearing Up for Kindergarten program beginning this October. The program will be held at the Five Points Elementary School on Wednesday’s beginning on October 2 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. The Gearing Up for Kindergarten program is intended for families with a child who will be entering kindergarten in August 2020. The classes run for an hour and a half each night This program offers parent/child activities, as well as separate child preparation and parent education classes. Parent topics include: Learning Styles/School Readiness, Temperament, Early Literacy/Math, Social/Emotional Development, Nurturance and Prevention Tools, Nutrition, Safety, and Parent’s Role in School Success. Preschool topics include Math activities, Science exploration, Motor development, Sensory development and Reading/Literacy. The program is free of charge, with child care being offered for siblings. Bangor Lodge #1106 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is pleased to announce the 2019 edition of the Bangor Elks Halloween Parade in the Borough of Bangor. The parade is scheduled to take place Thursday October 17, 2019 at 7:00 PM with no rain date.
The parade theme for 2019 will be “A Mardi Gras Halloween”.
Individuals and groups wishing to participate in the parade, can sign up online for free online at https://forms.gle/XLfNWpgjPKyHK1hG9 or by visiting the lodge home page and clicking on the parade link. It will be necessary to include an email address for registration for further communications and on the parade. Online registration will be available until October 12, 2019.
The parade route will be the same as last year. Starting at Pennsylvania Ave (Near The Beehive/Merchants Bank) and then moving right onto N Main St past the CVS Pharmacy then making a right onto Broadway and ending at the Elks Lodge.

Quilt Guild Accepting New Members
Are you interested in learning more about quilting or joining monthly with others who have a common interest in quilting? If yes, consider membership in the Heart In Hand Quilt Guild.
Monthly meetings, programs and workshops help members to learn new skills, encourage each other, and meet with others interested in quilting. Members also make community service items for mastectomy patients at local hospitals.
The Guild meets monthly at the Hope United Church of Christ, Wind Gap the second Thursday evening of each month from 7-8:30 PM. Our central location works well for members from the Slatebelt, Pocono’s, and Lehigh Valley areas. Membership is open to anyone over the age of 18. The program year starts in September and ends in August. Enrollment is currently open for new members. Annual dues costs $35. Help Track Bald Eagle Population
The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking for the public’s help to track the state’s growing bald eagle population. After reaching a low of just three nesting bald eagle pairs in the Commonwealth in the early 1980s, officials now estimate there are more than 300 nesting pairs here.
While bald eagles are no longer listed as a threatened species in Pennsylvania, they are still protected by the U.S. Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits taking of the birds, nests or eggs. If you spot a bald eagle nest, please use proper etiquette to avoid disturbing the birds.

To borrow equipment, you must provide a driver’s license or other form of state issued identification. Persons age 16 and older must possess a current fishing license to fish. Adults can help children under 16 fish without a license. Bait is not provided.

In fact, 59 percent of American workers described their current employer’s policy as “business casual” or “casual,” according to a recent study from Randstad US.

Activities To Help Manage ‘Bad Behavior’
(StatePoint) When children misbehave, there’s often a reason for it, according to experts.
“Our bodies want to be in balance and, ideally, we seek out what we need when we need it. When we are hungry, we eat. When we are thirsty, we drink. But when it comes to children whose sensory and nervous systems don’t process efficiently or effectively, this restorative balance may simply look like bad or undesired behavior,” says Ellen Metrick, a toy design consultant and an expert contributor to TheGeniusofPlay.org,
To help, Metrick and The Genius of Play, an initiative whose mission is to raise awareness about the importance of play and help parents make play a critical part of raising their kids, are offering three ideas for activities that will give a needed boost to children who are under-stimulated and crave more sensory stimulation:
• Climb on a jungle gym. Hanging on monkey bars and climbing ladders use a child’s own body as resistance to send signals to the brain and help organize the nervous system.
• Have a dance party. Games like freeze dance and musical chairs add structure and auditory processing to play. Children receive feedback from their muscles and joints with every step they take.
• Pop some bubbles. Jumping up and down on a sheet of bubble wrap can be great fun and the deep pressure will trigger sensory receptors, telling the brain how to control movement and postural balance.
For children who are over-stimulated and need a bit less distraction, consider these three ideas for helping kids focus, from Metrick and The Genius of Play:
• Tone down the sound. Removing extraneous sounds, like music, television and the whirring of a washing machine, may lessen distracting stimuli and improve the child’s focus and engagement in the activity.
• Play at a table. Using a placemat or cookie sheet under the toy or activity at an empty table provides visual boundaries for focused play. It helps to have feet firmly planted on the ground, rather than dangling, so consider using a child-sized play table.
• Create a quiet area. Adding soft pillows and blankets to a cozy corner gives children a space to seek respite from environmental stimuli.

Stop the Bleed
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Johnsonville will be hosting a STOP THE BLEED campaign on September 14th at 9 AM. This is a federally funded program with no cost to participants. Chad Oliver from Suburban EMS will be leading the training.
Bystanders are usually first on the scene of an accident until emergency responders arrive. The STOP THE BLEED program is aimed to train bystanders to help in bleeding situations.

Saturday, September 28 at 7:30pm to 9:00pm at Jacobsburg Park. Did you know that the night sky is filled with all sorts of wildlife? Join us for this nighttime adventure as we use our imagination and search the sky for bears, swans, eagles, dolphins and even dragons! Please dress warmly and wear sturdy shoes. Bring a blanket to sit on, a flashlight, water, a snack, and binoculars if you have them. Please note that the park will not provide telescopes at this program. This program is best for families with children ages 5 and up. Registration is required.

Slate Belt Rising will be hosting The Slate Belt BASH & ROAD RALLY Scavenger Hunt on Sunday, September 29th at Weona Park. The road rally scavenger hunt will be held from 9am-12pm with cash prizes for first place ($1,000.00 - YES! 1k) through third place finishers.
All you Slate Belt navigators and experts be ready to show off your Slate Belt Truth! Bangor Halloween Parade
Bangor Lodge #1106 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is pleased to announce the 2019 edition of the Bangor Elks Halloween Parade in the Borough of Bangor. The parade is scheduled to take place Thursday October 17, 2019 at 7:00 PM with no rain date. The parade theme for 2019 will be “A Mardi Gras Halloween.”
Individuals and groups wishing to participate in the parade can sign up online for free at https://forms.gle/XLfNWpgjPKyHK1hG9 or by visiting the lodge home page and clicking on the parade link. It is necessary to include an email address for registration for further communications and on the parade. Registration will be available until October 10, 2019.
The parade route will be the same as last year. Line up will be at the Merchants Bank, Beehive, and Route 191 areas.
After the parade, the Bangor Lodge will once again host free hot dogs and soda at the lodge for the parade participants. Further information on the parade will be released in the coming weeks.

Events include; woods walk, black powder novelty shoot, primitive archery, knife & hawk throw, and Sunday muzzleloader shotgun competition. Saturday night camp feast and pumpkin carving contest. Bach Choir Concert: Welcome to Westminster Abbey
The Bach Choir of Bethlehem welcomes Canada’s Theatre of Early Music as their Gala artist to present the American premiere of the Coronation of King George II on Saturday, October 26 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Allentown. The ensemble is led by Danny Taylor, frequent Bach soloist and a much in-demand countertenor. In creating the coronation, Taylor and his musicians deliver orchestral and choral excellence that includes Renaissance to Baroque to present-day compositions.

A Pig Roast hosted by Mount Bethel Vol. Fire Company is set for Saturday, September 14 from 3 PM – 10 PM at 2341 N Delaware Drive, Mount Bethel.

Stop the Bleed
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Johnsonville will be hosting a STOP THE BLEED campaign on September 14th at 9 AM. This is a federally funded program with no cost to participants. Chad Oliver from Suburban EMS will be leading the training.
Bystanders are usually first on the scene of an accident until emergency responders arrive. The STOP THE BLEED program is aimed to train bystanders to help in bleeding situations.
Did you know that a person can bleed to death in five minutes? This program will provide skills that could save someone’s life.

Seed Saving Workshop

They will spend the time collecting seed from the field, processing kale seed, tomato seed, onion seed, flowers and garlic to name a few. The seed you collect, clean and process will be saved for their 2020 season. There will be plenty of time for discussion. You will leave with enthusiasm and confidence to practice seed saving on your own. Plus a sample of the seeds you collect. No experience necessary!

Brian and Jean Krenicky of the Jacobsburg Historical Society will cover general instruction on getting the most from a cast iron Dutch Oven and then participants will have the opportunity to prepare lunch.
They'll provide ingredients for a main dish, a side and dessert. Please let us know ahead of time if you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions and we will do our best to accommodate them. Wear comfortable clothes and bring water and your appetite. This program is only open to ages 12 and up. There is a $10.00 registration fee for this program. Registration closes on September 10th.

An officer, with his canine companion, from the Bushkill Township Police Department will provide our program. He will show and explain the workings of these wonderful dogs with the police. Also, a correction - Walter Cole provied our program of the 100 Years of Football Rivalry between Bangor and Pen Argyl on Thursday, August 15. At several requests, we will have Mr. Cole come back again when he has collected more data. Thanks to Mr. Cole for such an interesting part of local history. Celtic Cultural Competitions
The Celtic Cultural Alliance is hosting several competitions celebrating Celtic music and poetry at Celtic Classic Highland Games and Festival this year. The competitions’ goal is to showcase and celebrate the local talent in songwriting, youth Celtic fiddle playing, and creativity in poetry.
- The Celtic Songwriting Competition, sponsored by C.F. Martin & Co. and Sellersville Theatre, will be held on Saturday, September 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Celtic Heritage Hollow Stage during the 32nd Celtic Classic Highland Games and Festival. The amateur songwriter with the highest score will be awarded one Martin Guitar DRSG Jr. along with the opportunity to audition as the opening act for a performance at the Sellersville Theatre. The contest is limited to the first 15 applicants with a correct registration.
- The Youth Fiddle Competition will be held on September 28 at the Charlie Brown Ice House, Bethlehem, for students under the age of 18. This unique fiddle contest primarily focuses on Celtic fiddling styles including Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton, Shetland, and Galician. Cash prizes are awarded.
- The Celtic Poetry contest is open for writers of all ages. Original works for the poems should reflect the Celtic culture, arts, history, or literature. Personal anecdotes of family memories or traveling experiences are also encouraged.

Saturday, September 28 at 2:30pm to 4:30pm at Jacobsburg Park. The tell-tale signs of autumn are all around as the summer winds down. Join us as we search for wildflowers, changing leaves, migrating birds and other signs of the changing season. Be prepared for a moderate hike that may involve muddy slopes and uphill climbs. Please bring binoculars, a camera, water and a snack, and wear sturdy shoes. Registration is required.
Celestial Wildlife
Saturday, September 28 at 7:30pm to 9:00pm at Jacobsburg Park. Did you know that the night sky is filled with all sorts of wildlife? Join us for this nighttime adventure as we use our imagination and search the sky for bears, swans, eagles, dolphins and even dragons! Please dress warmly and wear sturdy shoes. Bring a blanket to sit on, a flashlight, water, a snack, and binoculars if you have them. Please note that the park will not provide telescopes at this program. This program is best for families with children ages 5 and up. Registration is required.

Slate Belt Rising will be hosting The Slate Belt BASH & ROAD RALLY Scavenger Hunt on Sunday, September 29th at Weona Park. The road rally scavenger hunt will be held from 9am-12pm with cash prizes for first place ($1,000.00 - YES! 1k) through third place finishers.
All you Slate Belt navigators and experts be ready to show off your Slate Belt Truth! The Road Rally course will wind through 10 municipalities with challenges to find obscure quirky landmarks and will end with a bonus round of Slate Belt history & facts. So brush up on your Slate Belt and your bank account could rise by $1,000.00.

Lukie's Fall Festival was founded in memory of Luke Anthony Joseph Maida who passed away from Spinal Muscular Atrophy at 6 months old. Bangor Halloween Parade
Bangor Lodge #1106 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is pleased to announce the 2019 edition of the Bangor Elks Halloween Parade in the Borough of Bangor. The parade is scheduled to take place Thursday October 17, 2019 at 7:00 PM with no rain date. The parade theme for 2019 will be “A Mardi Gras Halloween.”
Individuals and groups wishing to participate in the parade can sign up online for free at https://forms.gle/XLfNWpgjPKyHK1hG9 or by visiting the lodge home page and clicking on the parade link. It is necessary to include an email address for registration for further communications and on the parade. Registration will be available until October 10, 2019.
The parade route will be the same as last year. Line up will be at the Merchants Bank, Beehive, and Route 191 areas.
After the parade, the Bangor Lodge will once again host free hot dogs and soda at the lodge for the parade participants. Further information on the parade will be released in the coming weeks.

The Jacktown-Blue Mountain Antique Gas & Steam Engine Association 1279 Richmond Rd, Bangor will hold its October Show October 19/20 from 7 AM – 5 PM

There will be a flea market, hit and miss engine and antique tractor displays. Antique tractor pull and garden tractor pull. Pony rides and train rides for the kids. This year there will a truck display and antique car display. Make sure you stop by to see the recently refurbished steam saw mill. There are 2 museums to visit as well. Pick up your mums, apples and pumpkins while visiting. Live music will be on both days.

The Market Faire & Rendezvous will be held October 25-27, 2019 at the Boulton Historic Site and Jacobsburg Historical Society 402-403 Henry Rd, Nazareth. The Rendezvous Encampment will be open to the public Saturday, 10:00am to 4:00pm AND Sunday, 10:00am to 3:00pm
Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Rendezvous Encampment, Fur Trade Era time period; Friday, Oct. 25 - Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019. Events include; woods walk, black powder novelty shoot, primitive archery, knife & hawk throw, and Sunday muzzleloader shotgun competition. Saturday night camp feast and pumpkin carving contest. Blanket traders welcome in the encampment, no fees, prizes welcome.
Food vendor on site during public hours on Saturday and Sunday. Market Faire sutlers of 18th & 19th century wares, clothing, redware, historical artwork, and accoutrements will be setup along side the encampment.

Bach Choir Concert: Welcome to Westminster Abbey
The Bach Choir of Bethlehem welcomes Canada’s Theatre of Early Music as their Gala artist to present the American premiere of the Coronation of King George II on Saturday, October 26 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Allentown. The ensemble is led by Danny Taylor, frequent Bach soloist and a much in-demand countertenor. In creating the coronation, Taylor and his musicians deliver orchestral and choral excellence that includes Renaissance to Baroque to present-day compositions.
