That’s why we in the House voted to approve legislation designed to improve and strengthen Pennsylvania’s Do Not Call list. That legislation is currently awaiting the governor’s signature to become law.
House Bill 318 amends the 1996 Telemarketer Registration Act by banning these calls on legal holidays and requiring computerized auto-dialers (robocalls) to give residents an “opt-out” option at the beginning of the call. The bill also removes the current renewal requirement and gives residents the opportunity to permanently register their phone numbers on the Pennsylvania Do Not Call list. Currently, phone numbers must be re-registered every five years. The measure also allows businesses to register their numbers on the state’s Do Not Call list. The pink fountain is also a reminder to all women of the importance of mammograms and early detection. Every day 37 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition. In 2019, it is estimated there will be more than 12,000 women diagnosed with the disease. The American Cancer Society estimates nearly 2,000 will die from it. The Department of Health is also highlighting the Pennsylvania Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, which is a free early detection program funded through a grant from the Centers for Disease Control. Cash Prizes for Pumpkin Carving Contest![]() Octoberfest this year will be held at Bangor Memorial Park (90 Eisenhart Blvd) on Saturday and Sunday, October 19th (4 pm to 8:30 pm) and October 20th (4 pm to 8 pm).
Individuals and/or groups are needed to enter in the themed, carved pumpkin display. Maybe you own a business and you have a group of employees that would like to get together to carve some pumpkins to enter in the contest. You can pick whatever theme you would like. There are tons of carving themes on the internet. There have been some interesting themes in the past such as Harry Potter, classic cars, Toy Story, Elvis, Peanuts, etc. Do you play a sport? Maybe your group wants to carve pumpkins to show support for that sport? The only cost to enter is that you have to buy your own pumpkins. A group of themed pumpkins has to have a minimum of 2 pumpkins in their themed display but you can have as many as you want to carve on display. There will be CASH prizes awarded for the top 3 best group of themed, carved pumpkins. Prizes are $100 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd place and $25.00 for 3rd place. Please email bangorparkboard@gmail.com for a form and to read the complete rules for entering. In addition, the scarecrow making booth is in need of old stockings and clothing (pants, jeans, t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, hats, etc. They can have holes in them. You can drop them off at the Borough Building or at The Little Corner Cafe. Octoberfest is a 2 day event (which takes place at night) which features food, craft/gift vendors, a moonbounce, pony rides, scarecrow making, pumpkin carving/painting, hay ride and costume contest with prizes. Our main feature is the train ride that will take you around the park to see all of the carved, lit up Jack-O-Lanterns on display. Vendor Spaces are still available. Volunteers are needed to help in all aspects of the event from collecting tickets at booths, running booths, helping to set up and clean up the pumpkin displays and working in the concession stand. For more information or to volunteer, contact Debbie Smith at bangorparkboard@gmail.com (prefer email) or call 610-751-7692.

REGISTER HERE Allentown Rescue Mission Graduates 13![]() Recently, the Allentown Rescue Mission held a celebration to recognize the thirteen men who graduated from the Mission’s Transformation Program in the third quarter of 2019.
Five of these men have full-time employment outside of the Mission. Four are working for the Mission’s Clean Team, and one is enrolled in truck driving school to earn his CDL. Thirteen may seem like a low number, and summers at the Mission can be slow. However, for the Mission’s staff summer is a time to prepare for the fall and winter, and the high numbers of men seeking shelter, and a better life. The “busiest season” has arrived with the end of the quarter, and that means the Mission needs your help. There are many ways to help us. Here are some links: https://www.allentownrescuemission.org/ways-to-help https://www.facebook.com/AllentownRescueMission/posts/10156019451535939/ These thirteen graduates attend church on a weekly basis and remain free from the chains of addictions that brought them to the Mission. These men have proved that a life can be changed by the power of Jesus Christ.
