Bill Bans Purchase of TobaccoProducts w/Public Assistance $$$
The House recently approved legislation that would prohibit the purchase of tobacco products using public assistance funds on electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards.
Such benefits are intended to help Pennsylvanians who cannot afford life’s essentials, not unnecessary items such as tobacco. House Bill 847 would forbid the use of EBT cards, issued by the Department of Human Services (DHS) to administer public assistance benefits, to purchase tobacco or tobacco-related products. Personal funds on EBT cards, such as child support that is in arrears, would be exempt. The Human Services Code already prohibits the purchase of liquor and alcohol with EBT cards. The bill now goes to the Senate for its consideration Cash Prizes for Pumpkin Carving Contest Octoberfest this year will be held at Bangor Memorial Park (90 Eisenhart Blvd) on Saturday and Sunday, October 19th (4 pm to 8:30 pm) and October 20th (4 pm to 8 pm).
Individuals and/or groups are needed to enter in the themed, carved pumpkin display. Maybe you own a business and you have a group of employees that would like to get together to carve some pumpkins to enter in the contest. You can pick whatever theme you would like. There are tons of carving themes on the internet. There have been some interesting themes in the past such as Harry Potter, classic cars, Toy Story, Elvis, Peanuts, etc. Do you play a sport? Maybe your group wants to carve pumpkins to show support for that sport? The only cost to enter is that you have to buy your own pumpkins. A group of themed pumpkins has to have a minimum of 2 pumpkins in their themed display but you can have as many as you want to carve on display. There will be CASH prizes awarded for the top 3 best group of themed, carved pumpkins. Prizes are $100 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd place and $25.00 for 3rd place. Please email [email protected] for a form and to read the complete rules for entering. In addition, the scarecrow making booth is in need of old stockings and clothing (pants, jeans, t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, hats, etc. They can have holes in them. You can drop them off at the Borough Building or at The Little Corner Cafe. Octoberfest is a 2 day event (which takes place at night) which features food, craft/gift vendors, a moonbounce, pony rides, scarecrow making, pumpkin carving/painting, hay ride and costume contest with prizes. Our main feature is the train ride that will take you around the park to see all of the carved, lit up Jack-O-Lanterns on display. Vendor Spaces are still available. Volunteers are needed to help in all aspects of the event from collecting tickets at booths, running booths, helping to set up and clean up the pumpkin displays and working in the concession stand. For more information or to volunteer, contact Debbie Smith at [email protected] (prefer email) or call 610-751-7692.

Help Track Bald Eagle Population The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking for the public’s help to track the state’s growing bald eagle population. After reaching a low of just three nesting bald eagle pairs in the Commonwealth in the early 1980s, officials now estimate there are more than 300 nesting pairs here.
While bald eagles are no longer listed as a threatened species in Pennsylvania, they are still protected by the U.S. Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits taking of the birds, nests or eggs. If you spot a bald eagle nest, please use proper etiquette to avoid disturbing the birds. To review bald eagle nest guidelines, or to report your nest sighting to the game commission, click here.
