Rep. Emrick honors Jana Morris

Picture
Last week Rep. Joe Emrick presented Jana Morris, Founder and Executive Director of Recovery Revolution, with a House citation recognizing her remarkable work as a community leader and advocate in the fight against opioid addiction.
She has taken significant action to change the stigma surrounding substance abuse disorders and cooperates with local police departments to shepherd at-risk individuals into treatment instead of prison. Emrick thanks Jana for showing me the facility and her contributions to our community. "It was a privilege to recognize all that she continues to do," he said.

Cash Prizes for Pumpkin Carving Contest

Picture
Octoberfest this year will be held at Bangor Memorial Park (90 Eisenhart Blvd) on Saturday and Sunday, October 19th (4 pm to 8:30 pm) and October 20th (4 pm to 8 pm).
Individuals and/or groups are needed to enter in the themed, carved pumpkin display. Maybe you own a business and you have a group of employees that would like to get together to carve some pumpkins to enter in the contest.  You can pick whatever theme you would like.  There are tons of carving themes on the internet.
There have been some interesting themes in the past such as Harry Potter, classic cars, Toy Story, Elvis, Peanuts, etc. Do you play a sport?  Maybe your group wants to carve pumpkins to show support for that sport?   The only cost to enter is that you have to buy your own pumpkins.  A group of themed pumpkins has to have a minimum of 2 pumpkins in their themed display but you can have as many as you want to carve on display.

There will be CASH prizes awarded for the top 3 best group of themed, carved pumpkins. Prizes are $100 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd place and $25.00 for 3rd place.  Please email bangorparkboard@gmail.com for a form and to read the complete rules for entering.
In addition, the scarecrow making booth is in need of old stockings and clothing (pants, jeans, t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, hats, etc.  They can have holes in them. You can drop them off at the Borough Building or at The Little Corner Cafe.
Octoberfest is a 2 day event (which takes place at night) which features food, craft/gift vendors, a moonbounce, pony rides, scarecrow making, pumpkin carving/painting, hay ride and costume contest with prizes.  Our main feature is the train ride that will take you around the park to see all of the carved, lit up Jack-O-Lanterns on display.
Vendor Spaces are still available.  Volunteers are needed to help in all aspects of the event from collecting tickets at booths, running booths, helping to set up and clean up the pumpkin displays and working in the concession stand.
For more information or to volunteer, contact Debbie Smith at bangorparkboard@gmail.com    (prefer email) or call 610-751-7692.

Help Track Bald Eagle Population

Picture
The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking for the public’s help to track the state’s growing bald eagle population. After reaching a low of just three nesting bald eagle pairs in the Commonwealth in the early 1980s, officials now estimate there are more than 300 nesting pairs here.
While bald eagles are no longer listed as a threatened species in Pennsylvania, they are still protected by the U.S. Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits taking of the birds, nests or eggs. If you spot a bald eagle nest, please use proper etiquette to avoid disturbing the birds.

New Main Street Market
Like a Breath of Fresh Air
........Plans Include Delivery Service.......

Picture

by Larry Cory
The re-opening of Main Street Market in Bangor is refreshing news since people, unfortunately,  have become accustomed to seeing “going out of business” signs in many communities, including downtown Bangor.
When the Bank of America closed in Bangor two years ago,  that was a shocker. What began as the First National Bank many years ago was now gone, making one wonder who’s next.
When news of the Main Street Market closing hit social media and elsewhere,  it was as though Bangor had been dealt, not just  another shocking setback, but one that hits where it really hurts.
Unless you have been squirreled away in a quarry hole for the past few years, you know that Main Street Market is not just another grocery store, it is THE grocery store for many residents in the Bangor area. Thus, local officials worked quickly with Lanta Bus to transport area residents to nearby stores.  After all, food is a commodity that one needs everyday.
But just as quickly as Lanta came to the rescue, Nicole and Duane Smith, former managers of the Portland Market, stepped up to reopen the Market in Bangor.
“It was really by chance,” Nicole said. “We wanted to go back in business years ago, so I said to my husband, it might be a long-shot so why don’t we try to get in there.”
The Smiths ran the Portland Market in the early 2000s, but were forced to close after three floods made it impossible to continue.  Currently, they are working toward reopening the Main Street store with a refurbished parking lot that has been milled and paved and a roof that has also been repaired.
Once open,  they’re  planning a delivery service which is a huge plus for their neighbors in the area.
Inside, “they’re going to see a nice, clean store,” Duane said. They also hope to continue to sell meat from local farms and they plan to have a butcher on hand “seven days a week.”  Their tentative  hours are 8-9 weekdays, 8-8 Saturdays and 8-6 on Sundays.
“The only day we will probably close is Christmas Day,” Duane said. They are also planning a soft opening for November 1 “if everything goes well.”
After meeting with the Smiths,  it’s obvious that they are committed to providing quality and friendly service to the area. It will be like a breath of fresh air when shoppers open their doors for the first time and are greeted by the friendly faces of long-time store employees.

Not Every Hero Wears A Cape

Picture
by Rep Joe Emrick
This year, Pennsylvania will once again join the rest of the nation in marking Fire Prevention Week, which runs from Sunday, Oct. 6, through Saturday, Oct. 12.
This year’s theme, set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), is “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape.” The goal of this year’s campaign is to recognize the everyday people who motivate their households to develop and practice a home fire escape plan and to encourage others to implement these basic behaviors that can save lives.
With today’s homes being filled with synthetic materials that burn hotter and faster, residents may have as little as two minutes to safely exit a burning structure. Knowing this, it is more important than ever to establish an escape plan that guarantees the safety of everyone under your roof.
A functional home escape plan includes working smoke alarms on every level of the home, in every bedroom and near all sleeping areas. It also includes two ways out of every room, usually a door and a window, with a clear path to an outside meeting place that is a safe distance from the home. Finally, home escape plans should be practiced at least twice a year by all members of the household.
Be a hero this year. Develop and practice a fire escape plan with your family; it could mean the difference between life and death. For more information on fire safety and the development of an escape plan, visit the NFPA’s website at www.nfpa.org

   Greater Valley YMCA’s Initiative Free
Membership for 7th Graders

Picture

At the Y, they know that 7th grade is a tough time for kids. It’s a critical time in a young person’s life when exposure to risk factors greatly increases.  Risk factors are influences that can lead teens to experiment with unhealthy behaviors. During the early teen years, youth can begin to distance themselves from family and positive supports systems.
The Y’s 7th Grade Initiative (7GI) helps youth realize their potential to become active, engaged, and thriving adults at a critical developmental age. Through the 6 pillars of the structured program, 7th graders develop confidence, independence, self-expression, responsibility, self-control and teamwork at the beginning of their transition from childhood to adulthood. The 7GI program aims to strengthen youth protective factors and helps kids adopt mature, healthy habits. This program offers a free youth membership to 7th graders with program participation.
Registration for the Greater Valley YMCA’s 7th Grade Initiative Program can be completed by stopping into any Lehigh Valley Y branch. Students must bring proof of 7th Grade status (a roster or report card), along with a parent or guardian to any of the Greater Valley YMCA locations. Then, 7th graders will sign a code of conduct, complete forms, and attend program orientation.  Orientation covers safe use of the facility and equipment. After completing the application process, the free youth membership will be awarded. Membership must be redeemed while student is a current 7th grader or entering their 7th grade year.

67% of PA. voters want independent
body to draw voting district lines.

Picture

A new statewide poll of registered voters’ attitudes released today shows why 67% of Pennsylvania voters support an independent commission to draw legislative district lines. This includes majorities of Democrats (66%), independents (78%) and Republicans (63%). This poll sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania and Fair Districts PA was designed and administered by the Center for Opinion Research at Franklin & Marshall  College.
The poll confirms recent surveys showing overwhelming support for an independent commission. What’s new: an in-depth look at reasons for that support.
A strong majority of voters agreed that the current system
  • Allows party leaders to put party leaders ahead of voters' interest (72%)
  • Creates polarization and gridlock (70%)
  • Allows officials to choose their own voters (65%)
  • Gives voters less choice on Election Day (61%)
  • Prevents voters from holding their representatives accountable (61%)
Majorities in every region responded in favor of an independent commission, with 71% in support in Central Pennsylvania, 70% in Allegheny County, 69% in Philadelphia and 65% in the Northeast.
One more key takeaway: a majority of voters consider this as an election issue in their vote for legislators: 59% of respondents said they were more likely or very likely to support legislators who vote for an independent citizens redistricting commission.
