On Monday, May 27 at 9:00 am the Pen Argyl American Legion Post 502 and Grace United Methodist Church will hold a Memorial Day Service at Fairview Cemetery, Pen Argyl. Invocation by American Legion Post 502 Chaplin, Corey Rosynek. Opening and Closing Ceremony will be Commander James Shoemaker, Guest Speaker will be The Reverend David Felker, a USAF Vietnam War Veteran, Boy Scout Troops 34 and 48 will present colors. The Slate Belt Choir will sing two songs and two Pen Argyl High School students will recite the Gettysburg Address and In Flander’s Field. State Sentaor Mario Scavello and State Representative Marcia Hahn will also say a few words. Military Honors – Post 502 Firing Squad, Tap’s – Walter Cole. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, 404 E. Mountain Avenue, Pen Argyl.

Rivalry Game Commemorative Coasters
To memorialize the 100th Rivalry Game, the Football Parent Associations, from both Bangor and Pen Argyl, are selling beautiful commemorative gold embossed slate coasters. These coasters are an authentic slate product manufactured right here in our beloved Slate Belt. The coasters are larger, in both size and width, than standard size coasters and are of a higher slate quality. Included with each set is a brief history of slate.
As a fundraising event for both parent organizations, we are selling these keepsakes for $15.00 for a set of 4, $25.00 for two sets or $5.00 for a single coaster. Sale ends June 30th. To obtain an order form you may email Dackmc@epix.net or patdclub@gmail.com or visit the social media pages of both organizations. Payment can be submitted via Cash or Check by June 30th.

Many, many children and their siblings use our facilities. Keep close watch to stay attentive while using our property. Even help them cross the driveway. Never hurts to lend a hand.
There are no dogs allowed on the premises. This is privately owned by the Green and White Youth Association. This is not a public park or dog park. If you happen to forget then expect to be reminded by a coach or board member who has to use a shovel, so the players don’t step in something. Unless of course you brought a handy dandy poop bag. There’s a dumpster behind the meeting building. Poop bags do not belong in the green trash containers. Dumpster please.

Roseto Borough is happy to announce our 2019 summer recreation program. The dates will be the weeks of July 15 and July 22. We start at 9:00am and end at Noon each day, Monday - Friday. There is no cost for Roseto residents and a $30.00 per child for nonresidents. Children that have completed kindergarten up to 6th grade are invited to attend. They will have a registration time on Saturday July 13, 9:00-12:00 at the Roseto ballpark pavilion.

Magna Cum Laude Graduate
Bailey Brugler earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Misericordia University during their December 2018 Commencement exercises. Brugler graduated Magna Cum Laude. Brugler is the son of Brent and Tonya Brugler. He graduated from Nazareth Area High School in 2015. Brugler is currently enrolled in graduate school at Misericordia University pursing his Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy
Bangor GFWC Donates to Library
Carol Akam, President, Bangor Womens Club GFWC, shown presenting $1500 donation to Kathleen Lynch, Bangor Public Library Librarian. Ms Lynch talked about the different programs that are being held for adults and children. She also highlighted work by the Friends Of The Library and how they are helping to pay for the window tinting project and major cleaning.
June Jones, Education chair presented a $1000 check to Abigail McCour, this years scholarship winner. Abigail read her application essay and explained her plans to study pre-med at Jefferson in Philadelphia.
Peggy Golden read a lovely poem about a perfect job.

Road Project on PA 33 Underway
Allentown, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Engineering District 5 announced today work is scheduled to begin this week on a $5,097,705 project on PA 33 in Stockertown Borough, Bushkill, Plainfield, and Palmer townships, Northampton County.
The pavement preservation project includes milling, concrete patching, and paving of approximately 4.5 miles of PA 33 between the Main Street and Belfast exits.
Starting Monday (May 20), motorists should expect lane restrictions on PA 33 in both north and southbound directions. Northbound PA 33 will be restricted between the hours of 7:00 PM to 2:00 PM and southbound will see restrictions between 10:00 AM and 5:00 AM.
James D. Morrissey, Inc. of Philadelphia, PA is the general contractor on the project, which is expected to be complete in November. Traffic on PA 33 in the project area ranges between 18,703-27,336 vehicles northbound and 17,721-27,370 vehicles southbound.
For more information on projects occurring or being bid this year, those made possible by or accelerated by the state transportation funding plan (Act 89), or those on the department’s Four and Twelve Year Plans, visit www.projects.penndot.gov.

BAHS STAR & Horvath Science Awards
The Star Awards are given annually to a Bangor Area District student who has exhibited either classroom achievement and/or contributions to the school district or society that go above and beyond the classroom. Students are nominated for this award by their teachers, administrators, or other interested parties, and are chosen by a committee of alumni for this honor.
Hannah Bledsoe: Hannah, a senior, is at the top of her class academically and balances that with high achievement in the arts. She has participated in PMEA District Chorus for 3 years, ranking first in 2019. She has participated in PMEA Region V Chorus for 3 years and ranked first in 2018. She has also participated in the PMEA All-State Chorus and the NAFME All-Eastern Chorus. Other school activities include tennis, the German National Honor Society and the National Honor Society. She has plans to major in biology and pursue a pre-med track in college. In addition, she will continue to explore her interest in music by participating in college music programs as well.
Will Menhennitt: Will, a senior, is a Boy Scout in Troop 38 of Bangor. He has earned his Eagle Scout Badge by completing a project to create a new pavilion for the Little League Field at Bangor Park. As a patrol leader in his troop he has learned communication skills. In 2017, he attended the Boy Scout National Jamboree where he had the opportunity to meet people from around the world. Will has held many jobs since the age of 14 when he worked as a masonry laborer, and then later as an electrician’s helper, and currently as a substitute custodian for the Bangor School District. He intends to major in Criminal Justice in college and would like to become a State Trooper. He feels this may also give him a chance to use the many survival skills he has learned as a scout.
Tyler Carlson: Tyler is in the 5th grade at DeFranco Elementary School. Last year he had an anaphylactic reaction that sent him to St. Luke’s Hospital. After receiving many gifts while he was there, he decided he wanted to do the same for other kids who were hospitalized. Knowing that a hospital stay is not fun, he asked his mother to help him post a video on Facebook asking for small toys and other items for other young patients. These items were dropped off at his mother’s business, Grace on Broadway, in Bangor. The video was viewed 5000 times and he ended up visiting three local hospitals and distributing over 100 bags of toys. He decided to make this an ongoing project and has posted another video this year to continue his project.
About the Science Award
The Horvath Science Award, introduced in 2011, is given annually in honor of Dr. Bert Horvath and his wife, Betty Gregor Horvath, both Bangor graduates who have distinguished themselves in the field of science research. This award recognizes an outstanding science student in the hopes of inspiring the recipient to continue to pursue a career in that field.

Andrew Bunn: Andrew takes Advanced Placement and Honors level courses and is currently studying AP Physics and Honors Human Anatomy and Physiology. He is earning top grades in both. His teachers say that he strives to understand both the theoretical and mathematical aspects of science as well as the real-world applications of class topics. His lab skills are superior, as is his ability to analyze data and draw logical conclusions. Andrew has a special interest in Aerospace Sciences and plans to pursue this interest in college.

Students are nominated for this award by their teachers, administrators, or other interested parties, and are chosen by a committee of alumni for this honor.
Hannah Bledsoe: Hannah, a senior, is at the top of her class academically and balances that with high achievement in the arts. She has participated in PMEA District Chorus for 3 years, ranking first in 2019. She has participated in PMEA Region V Chorus for 3 years and ranked first in 2018. She has also participated in the PMEA All-State Chorus and the NAFME All-Eastern Chorus. Other school activities include tennis, the German National Honor Society and the National Honor Society. She has plans to major in biology and pursue a pre-med track in college. In addition, she will continue to explore her interest in music by participating in college music programs as well.
Will Menhennitt: Will, a senior, is a Boy Scout in Troop 38 of Bangor. He has earned his Eagle Scout Badge by completing a project to create a new pavilion for the Little League Field at Bangor Park. As a patrol leader in his troop he has learned communication skills. In 2017, he attended the Boy Scout National Jamboree where he had the opportunity to meet people from around the world. Will has held many jobs since the age of 14 when he worked as a masonry laborer, and then later as an electrician’s helper, and currently as a substitute custodian for the Bangor School District. He intends to major in Criminal Justice in college and would like to become a State Trooper. He feels this may also give him a chance to use the many survival skills he has learned as a scout.
Tyler Carlson: Tyler is in the 5th grade at DeFranco Elementary School. Last year he had an anaphylactic reaction that sent him to St. Luke’s Hospital. After receiving many gifts while he was there, he decided he wanted to do the same for other kids who were hospitalized. Knowing that a hospital stay is not fun, he asked his mother to help him post a video on Facebook asking for small toys and other items for other young patients. These items were dropped off at his mother’s business, Grace on Broadway, in Bangor. The video was viewed 5000 times and he ended up visiting three local hospitals and distributing over 100 bags of toys. He decided to make this an ongoing project and has posted another video this year to continue his project.
About the Science Award
The Horvath Science Award, introduced in 2011, is given annually in honor of Dr. Bert Horvath and his wife, Betty Gregor Horvath, both Bangor graduates who have distinguished themselves in the field of science research. This award recognizes an outstanding science student in the hopes of inspiring the recipient to continue to pursue a career in that field.

Andrew Bunn: Andrew takes Advanced Placement and Honors level courses and is currently studying AP Physics and Honors Human Anatomy and Physiology. He is earning top grades in both. His teachers say that he strives to understand both the theoretical and mathematical aspects of science as well as the real-world applications of class topics. His lab skills are superior, as is his ability to analyze data and draw logical conclusions. Andrew has a special interest in Aerospace Sciences and plans to pursue this interest in college.

Pack 102 Blue & Gold Ceremony
Pack 102 held their annual Blue and Gold ceremony at the VFW Post 739. There were 14 boys that earned their rank and one that crossed over from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts. At the event we had food that was donated by Broadway Pub and Dinky’s in addition to the parents providing a potluck. VFW post 739 is the charter Organization for Pack 102.
The boys and their families participated in a scavenger hunt which included compass work, plank races, a skit and more. The Boy Scout Troop 38 and Leaders were on hand to volunteer, organize some of the scavenger hunt and assist with the cross over ceremony. Pack 102 meetings are held Monday nights at 6:30 pm and the First United Methodist Church at 55 N. 3rd Street. For more information, visit their website at http://cubscoutpack102.org/

The new stuffed animals will be used on calls that involve children. Officer Kiefer of the Bangor Police Department and Officer Brown of the Washington Township Police Department were on site to accept the donations. We were able to give one bag to several local police department: Bangor Borough, Washington Township, and Roseto.
We also were able to give a bag to Suburban EMS. Pack 102 would like to thank the Police and Emergency Service for all that they do for our community.

Lantern Fly
Tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima) also known as ailanthus, is a rapidly growing deciduous tree native to both northeast and central China, as well as Taiwan.. Spotted Lanternfly, an invasive pest, is particularly attracted to Tree-of-heaven.
Tree-of-heaven was first introduced into the United States in the Philadelphia area in 1784. Immigrants later introduced tree-of-heaven to the West Coast in the 1850s. It was initially valued as an urban street tree and was widely planted in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., area. From these areas, tree-of-heaven has spread and become a common invasive plant in urban, agricultural, and forested areas.
Tree-of-heaven is dioecious, meaning a tree is either male or female, and typically grows in dense colonies, or “clones.” All trees in a single clone are the same sex. Female trees are prolific seeders with the potential to produce more than 300,000 seeds annually.
This species is easily confused with some of our native species that have compound leaves and numerous leaflets, such as staghorn sumac, black walnut, and hickory. The leaf edges of these native trees all have teeth, called serrations, while those of tree-of-heaven are smooth. The foul odor produced by the crushed foliage and broken twigs is also unique to tree-of-heaven.
Due to its extensive root system and resprouting ability, tree-of-heaven is difficult to control.

Houck Speaks To PA Women's Club
The May 6th meeting of the Pen Argyl Woman’s Club featured substitute guest speaker First Deputy District Attorney Terence Houck.
Attorney Houck, Northampton County’s first deputy district attorney and former Philadelphia police officer, is running for County District Attorney.
Attorney Houck, who has worked under District Attorney John Morganelli since 2006, lauded Morganelli’s contributions to the NARCAN
medication used to block the effects of opioids) project, the mental health court diversions, lower gang incidence, and the 2017 post conviction drug
court.
He spoke to the group specifically about the Slate Belt and attributed a lower level of crime to the sense of community. Problems facing the Slate Belt range from opioid issues to theft and lower level property crimes but, first and foremost is DUI (driving under the influence) making up 45% of all cases.
Some questions from the audience touched on illegal immigrants, child/mental abuse, and cell phones/distracted driving which by itself makes up 85% of all cases.
A drug task force newsletter was handed out at the conclusion of the meeting followed by discussion and refreshments.
The Woman’s Club meets @ 7pm every first Monday of the month at St John Lutheran Church on Westbrook Avenue in Pen Argyl.
The Club is always accepting new members.

If bitten, an individual should monitor the area for the next month. Symptoms of Lyme disease include fever, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, a bull’s eye rash may appear, and other symptoms that can be mistaken for viral infections, such as influenza or infectious mononucleosis.
Pennsylvania has led the nation in confirmed cases of Lyme disease for three straight years.

Climate Change Affects our Trees
Sycamore is Climate Change Resilient
The theory of evolution suggests species will adapt to changing environmental conditions over long periods of geologic time. But, instead of warming over a period of 1,000 years, the climate is changing faster due to human activity -- several degrees per 100 years. Due to the rate of climate change, the gradual natural selection of genetic traits that allow species to adapt and reproduce over time may not be enough to preserve the abundance of tree species in Pennsylvania.
Some tree species won’t be able to thrive here as the climate continues to change faster than the plants can adapt. Northern species like mountain maple, American beech, balsam fir, paper birch, and quaking aspen are especially at risk. Our climate may warm too quickly for these species to adapt before dying out. Yet, warming due to climate change is not the only threat to the commonwealth’s trees.
Last year (2018), many areas of the state set records for rainfall. Scientists forecasted that the northeastern U.S. climate would become not only warmer, but wetter -- which is be proving to be true. Since 1991, heavy rain events have increased more than 30 percent when compared to the 1901-1960 period.

Time To Share the Road
As the weather continues to warm up, more and more Pennsylvanians will ride their bicycles on the roads.
Both motorists and bicyclists can work together to ensure everyone shares the road and gets home safely.

Blackfly Spraying in Northampton County
The Delaware and Lehigh rivers in Northampton County are among approximately 1,700 stream miles in 35 Pennsylvania counties that will undergo both aerial and backpack spraying by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to control black flies.
The frequency will depend upon weather and biological conditions. Treatments cannot occur during periods of heavy rain or when water levels are high as these conditions lower the effectiveness of the treatment as well as significantly increase the cost of the control operations.
DEP uses Bti, a naturally occurring bacterium, to treat the larval stage of four specific human pest black fly species. This bacterium degrades quickly in the environment and does not harm the aquatic ecosystem, birds, or other insects.
DEP notifies county and local emergency management officials prior to any spraying activity. Helicopters can be seen flying over waterways and ground crews using backpack sprayers off bridges and wading in streams conducting control operations on behalf of DEP’s Black Fly Suppression Program.
Anyone concerned at the sight of helicopter or ground personnel is encouraged to call their county emergency management office to verify that a black fly treatment is taking place in their area on that day.

The club was organized in Bangor in 1913 and was taken into the General Federation of Womens Clubs Pennsylvania two years later. Carolyn Smith read a certificate of appreciation for the Bangor Club's continuous participation in GFWC Pennsylvania. The club conducts various fundraising activities to support the Bangor Public Library, PUMP Food Pantry, Holiday meals and gifts for needy families in the area, The Salvation Army, and Scholarships for local high school students. Each year the club conducts an Art Festival to showcase the talents of our local students and members. The most current project was to collect money for the Canine Initiative. The $305 raised will be added to the State GFWC program to purchase a service dog "Brock" and provide the training required for him to be successful.

"Weona Park Prepares for Weona 100"
Pen Argyl Borough is pleased to announce upcoming celebrations to mark the 100th Anniversary of Weona Park. The Borough requests volunteers, personal stories from Community for “Weona 100.” A joint committee of borough officials and residents are planning a weekend of “Weona 100” festivities and activities on June 19-20, 2020.
The Weona 100 committee will be active through the year leading up to the centennial celebration weekend with events at the borough’s Founder’s Day, held at the Park in June 2019, and the Lookout Fire Company Labor Day parade in September 2019. A commemorative booklet and accompanying calendar will also be published detailing the history of the park.
The committee is seeking community volunteers to assist with and serve as actors on the float as well as to pen personal accounts of their times at Weona Park for the booklet. “The booklet and calendar will highlight the fun times of past and present at Weona. We want to involve as many community members as we can in this and honor the origins of Weona Park,” said Borough Councilwoman and Weona 100 Chair Roberta Cowley. “Any community service organization, scout group, school group or other interested party is invited to be a part of Weona 100.”
Photos and stories of Weona Park memories can be submitted to the by contacting the committee organizers or through the Weona 100 – Weona Park Centennial Celebration Facebook page. Weona Park, founded in June 1920, was built through the collaborative efforts of many townspeople. The approximately 19-acre park is located on Route 512 in Pen Argyl. Today, Weona Park features a historic Dentzel carousel in addition to a miniature golf course, basketball court, skate park, baseball field, band shell, pavilions and playground. Many community events are celebrated at the park, from Easter egg hunts to summer carnivals, concerts and school rallies among others. Roseto Memorial Day
Donovan Grom, Commander of Martocci-Capobianco American Legion Post # 750 in Roseto has announced the schedule of Memorial Day events for Monday May 27th. The legionnaires, lead by the Bangor Area High School Band under the direction of Mr. Eric Hahn, will depart from the Post home located on Garibaldi Ave at 8:30 a.m. and proceed to the New Catholic Cemetery where services will be held at 9:00. The contingent will then move to the Roseto Presbyterian Cemetery on Liberty St for services at 9:30. The final graveside services will be held at the Catholic cemetery adjacent to Our Lady of Mt Carmel church at 10:00.
From this cemetery the legionnaires will proceed to the Municipal Plaza on Garibaldi Ave for the Community Services at the War Monuments beginning at 10:45 a.m. These services will also include the clergy from the area churches. In addition students from Bangor Middle School and Faith Christian School will read their winning essays on the topic “WHAT MEMORIAL DAY MEANS TO ME”. An oratorical presentation will be given by a student from Bangor Middle School.
Wreaths will be placed on the War Monuments by the Post. In the event of inclement weather, the community services will be held indoors at the Post Home at 143 Garibaldi Ave.
East Bangor Memorial Day
A Memorial Day service will he held on Monday, May 27th, at 1:00 p.m. at the East Bangor Cemetery, Park Rd., East Bangor, PA. The speaker will be Scott Saltern, a Navy veteran.There will be a roll call of those veterans who have died in the past year and are now buried in the East Bangor Cemetery. Musical selections will be offered by Ellis Williams & Co. A gun salute will be fired by the Martocci-Capobianco Post 750 American Legion, Roseto. Taps will be played by Aryana Smith. The East Bangor Fire Co. will be in attendance. In case of rain, the service will be held at the East Bangor United Methodist Community Church, 136 W. Central Ave. (Rt. 512), East Bangor, PA. Pen Argyl Memorial Day
On Monday, May 27 at 9:00 am the Pen Argyl American Legion Post 502 and Grace United Methodist Church will hold a Memorial Day Service at Fairview Cemetery, Pen Argyl. Invocation by American Legion Post 502 Chaplin, Corey Rosynek. Opening and Closing Ceremony will be Commander James Shoemaker, Guest Speaker will be The Reverend David Felker, a USAF Vietnam War Veteran, Boy Scout Troops 34 and 48 will present colors. The Slate Belt Choir will sing two songs and two Pen Argyl High School students will recite the Gettysburg Address and In Flander’s Field. State Sentaor Mario Scavello and State Representative Marcia Hahn will also say a few words. Military Honors – Post 502 Firing Squad, Tap’s – Walter Cole. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, 404 E. Mountain Avenue, Pen Argyl.

The guest speaker will be Congresswomen Susan Wild. ( Pa 7th District) They will also be recognizing Slate Belt High School seniors that will be joining the service after graduation. Each year the Bangor VFW, American Legion and Elks work together to organize Memorial Day and Veterans Day Activities.

The monthly meeting of the Monroe Animal League will be on Tuesday, May 28 at 7:00 PM at Perkins Restaurant, 1215 W. Main St, Stroudsburg. MAL promotes spay/neuter and humane education as a way to control pet overpopulation, and thus relieves cruelty and suffering among animals. We believe this to be the best way to achieve a future with no more homeless animals.

County Memorial Day Fest
Northampton County Memorial Day Festival will be held Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 10 AM – 6 PM at Louise W Moore Park Country Club Rd, Easton, Pennsylvania 18045
Celebrate the County with live music, demonstrations, food vendors, crafters, vendors, and non-profit organizations. An Award Ceremony will honor an outstanding employee of the County and each of the County's municipalities, as well as an Outstanding Volunteer, Outstanding Youth, Outstanding Veteran, and Outstanding Emergency Personnel. Employee awards will be decided upon by the municipalities. To nominate a deserving individual for one of the other categories, please send an email with a 250 word essay on why the individual deserves to win the award and how they impact the County. Meeting With the Author
The Bruce Jassett author visit that was to be held on April 20th was rescheduled due to illness. The new date is May 25, 2019 from 1pm to 3pm. The event is for ages 3-7. Space is limited . Fish For Free Day
If you’ve been thinking about trying fishing or wanting to introduce your child or a friend to the joys of the sport, you’ll have a great chance to do so next weekend!
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will host Fish for Free Day next Sunday, May 26.
On Fish for Free Days, anyone -- resident or non-resident -- can legally fish on all Pennsylvania waterways without a license.
All other fishing regulations will still apply.
For your convenience, there are even opportunities to borrow equipment from certain sites at state parks and other locations.

West Bangor Memorial Day
The West Bangor Memorial Association will sponsor the Annual Memorial Day Services
on Monday, May 27, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Memorial Site, Second Street, West Bangor, PA.
The principal speaker will be USMC Major Jenna E. Reed LL.M., a former resident of Bangor, PA. She joined the Marine Corps in 2010 after graduating from Villanova University Law School.
In case of inclement weather, services will be held at the St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church Social Hall, Verona Avenue, West Bangor.
The public is invited to attend.

Roseto Memorial Day
Donovan Grom, Commander of Martocci-Capobianco American Legion Post # 750 in Roseto has announced the schedule of Memorial Day events for Monday May 27th. The legionnaires, lead by the Bangor Area High School Band under the direction of Mr. Eric Hahn, will depart from the Post home located on Garibaldi Ave at 8:30 a.m. and proceed to the New Catholic Cemetery where services will be held at 9:00. The contingent will then move to the Roseto Presbyterian Cemetery on Liberty St for services at 9:30. The final graveside services will be held at the Catholic cemetery adjacent to Our Lady of Mt Carmel church at 10:00.
From this cemetery the legionnaires will proceed to the Municipal Plaza on Garibaldi Ave for the Community Services at the War Monuments beginning at 10:45 a.m. These services will also include the clergy from the area churches. In addition students from Bangor Middle School and Faith Christian School will read their winning essays on the topic “WHAT MEMORIAL DAY MEANS TO ME”. An oratorical presentation will be given by a student from Bangor Middle School.
Wreaths will be placed on the War Monuments by the Post. In the event of inclement weather, the community services will be held indoors at the Post Home at 143 Garibaldi Ave.

Scoring will be the combined score of both members over the course of 17 holes. Prizes will be awarded for winners in each age bracket, by the child’s age. Adults may play with more than once child at at time. All children must be between the ages of 4 and 12. Prizes holes will be awarded as well. Mulligan shots are available for purchase of $5.
Registration is $25 per team before May 25th, and $35 per team after May 25th . Registration includes a gift bag, a golf ball, and a hot dog lunch.
