BAHS STAR & Horvath Science Awards
The Star Awards are given annually to a Bangor Area District student who has exhibited either classroom achievement and/or contributions to the school district or society that go above and beyond the classroom.  Students are nominated for this award by their teachers, administrators, or other interested parties, and are chosen by a committee of alumni for this honor.
Hannah Bledsoe: Hannah, a senior, is at the top of her class academically and balances that with high achievement in the arts.  She has participated in PMEA District Chorus for 3 years, ranking first in 2019.  She has participated in PMEA Region V Chorus for 3 years and ranked first in 2018.  She has also participated in the PMEA All-State Chorus and the NAFME All-Eastern Chorus.  Other school activities include tennis, the German National Honor Society and the National Honor Society.  She has plans to major in biology and pursue a pre-med track in college.  In addition, she will continue to explore her interest in music by participating in college music programs as well.
Will Menhennitt: Will, a senior, is a Boy Scout in Troop 38 of Bangor.  He has earned his Eagle Scout Badge by completing a project to create a new pavilion for the Little League Field at Bangor Park.  As a patrol leader in his troop he has learned communication skills.  In 2017, he attended the Boy Scout National Jamboree where he had the opportunity to meet people from around the world.  Will has held many jobs since the age of 14 when he worked as a masonry laborer, and then later as an electrician’s helper, and currently as a substitute custodian for the Bangor School District.  He intends to major in Criminal Justice in college and would like to become a State Trooper. He feels this may also give him a chance to use the many survival skills he has learned as a scout.
Tyler Carlson: Tyler is in the 5th grade at DeFranco Elementary School.  Last year he had an anaphylactic reaction that sent him to St. Luke’s Hospital.  After receiving many gifts while he was there, he decided he wanted to do the same for other kids who were hospitalized.  Knowing that a hospital stay is not fun, he asked his mother to help him post a video on Facebook asking for small toys and other items for other young patients.  These items were dropped off at his mother’s business, Grace on Broadway, in Bangor.  The video was viewed 5000 times and he ended up visiting three local hospitals and distributing over 100 bags of toys.  He decided to make this an ongoing project and has posted another video this year to continue his project.
About the Science Award
The Horvath Science Award, introduced in 2011, is given annually in honor of Dr. Bert Horvath and his wife, Betty Gregor Horvath, both Bangor graduates who have distinguished themselves in the field of science research.  This award recognizes an outstanding science student in the hopes of inspiring the recipient to continue to pursue a career in that field.
Horvath Science Award Recipient 2018
Andrew Bunn:  Andrew takes Advanced Placement and Honors level courses and is currently studying AP Physics and Honors Human Anatomy and Physiology.  He is earning top grades in both.  His teachers say that he strives to understand both the theoretical and mathematical aspects of science as well as the real-world applications of class topics.  His lab skills are superior, as is his ability to analyze data and draw logical conclusions.  Andrew has a special interest in Aerospace Sciences and plans to pursue this interest in college.

PUBLIC NOTICE
The Green and White Youth Association fields off West Main Street in Pen Argyl public notice:
Please remember- Drive slow and safe.
Many, many children and their siblings use our facilities. Keep close watch to stay attentive while using our property. Even help them cross the driveway. Never hurts to lend a hand.
There are no dogs allowed on the premises. This is privately owned by the Green and White Youth Association.  This is not a public park or dog park. If you happen to forget then expect to be reminded by a coach or board member who has to use a shovel, so the players don’t step in something. Unless of course you brought a handy dandy poop bag. There’s a dumpster behind the meeting building. Poop bags do not belong in the green trash containers.  Dumpster please.
Thanks in advance,
GWYA Board Members

The Live-streamed Eagle cam from Hanover Pa. is back for its fifth year.  Sightings have already been recorded. They are currently in their incubating phase.   Incubation time is about 35 days, meaning the eggs would likely hatch some time in late March. Click on the graphic  to see the nest in real time.

Simple Tech Saves

Picture
Blame it on multi-tasking: you dropped your device in the middle of a DIY video and a cracked screen has left you (and your project) in despair. Can’t break away to get to a repair shop? Apply clear repair tape over the shattered screen to get the surface functioning and you back to mastering your task

 National Bike to Work Month

Picture

Lock up your bike and enter work in style with fabrics designed to keep you cool. May is National Bike to Work Month, and hundreds of thousands of commuters are expected to participate across the country.
If you are new to cycling in general or commuting to work by bike, there are a few things to consider before hitting the streets.
Planning the Route
Don’t just wing it! Take time to plan your route beforehand. Free apps can help you choose the best possible route for arriving safely and quickly, helping you avoid streets that aren’t ideal for cyclists. Because many such apps function using crowdsourced data, you’ll be drawing upon the real-time wisdom of other cyclists. This can mean a stress-free journey.
Maintaining the Look
No one wants to arrive at the workplace looking -- and smelling -- as though he just hit the gym. To look and feel as put together as you did before leaving the house, seek out fabrics that keep you comfortable.
That’s not as hard as it sounds these days, thanks to fabric innovations from companies such as Jos. A. Bank, which are helping commuters look stylish and polished all day, no matter how far they are traveling or how they get there. The brand now carries 37.5 temperature-regulating technology, which is woven into its quality wool, wool blend and cotton fabrics. The brand’s line of Custom Travel Tech suits, sport coats, shirts, and pants feature this fabric technology keeping riders cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s cold. Plus, it’s wrinkle-resistant and designed to trap odor molecules that easily wash way when cleaned.  To learn more, visit www.josbank.com.  (StatePoint)

Patches for Pools

Picture
Warm weather means your family will be ready for fun in the sun and a few laps in your backyard pool. On the flip side, finding a pool leak can send you spiraling down the money drain, while a hole in your child’s favorite float might cause the next meltdown. For quick and easy repairs, grab T-Rex Waterproof Tape, which as the name implies, offers a waterproof seal, even for underwater repairs.

Learning More About Your Smartphone

Picture
Turn Your Phone into a Ruler
Free apps such as the Ruler App are a perfect solution for measuring objects that are smaller than your smartphone screen or even for measuring larger objects in a photo such as furniture
.

Stay Safe While Out on the Town
Use the bSafe app on your iPhone or Android. It lets you send invitations to friends or family to track your location as well as setting a timer to trigger a distress call if you do not arrive home in the amount of time you schedule. It even schedules fake calls so it can look like you are talking to someone while you walk home.

5 Great Ways to Relieve Stress

Picture

Here are five great ways to reduce tension, relieve stress and feel better.
• Practice Yoga: Yoga is a powerful stress reliever as it combines the benefits of stretching, meditation, controlled breathing and exercise all in one package. It’s as simple as unfurling your yoga mat when stress runs high. While studios are easy to find these days, there are plenty of free videos you can find on YouTube when you need to de-stress on your own schedule and at home.
• Play music: Music can reduce stress, particularly when you are the one playing it. The slim design of digital pianos, such as the PX-S1000, makes it possible to get the feel and sound of a grand piano in a compact design. And integrated Bluetooth audio lets you connect your device wirelessly to this particular model, so you can also kick back and relax and listen to your favorite music through its powerful stereo amplification system.
• Laugh: Laughter reduces physical and mental tension.  Even just smiling can trick you into feeling happier, so if the real laughter isn’t forthcoming, consider the old adage -- fake it ‘til you make it.
• Take a hike: Spending time in nature can reduce stress, ease anxiety and boost feelings of happiness according to the American Heart Association.  Just be sure you take along tools to help you navigate the trail and avoid bad weather. High-tech wearables, such as the Casio Pro Trek PRG650Y-1 watch, will keep both hands free for ease on the trail.
• Tackle your to-do list: Is the source of your stress a growing to-do list? Pick an item, any item and tackle it today. You’ll feel so much better afterward.

Ways to Get Fit as a Family

Picture

One of the keys to encouraging children to develop health habits early is to make fitness a priority in the home.
The great news is there are a variety of ways to lead an active lifestyle that are suitable for the whole family, including kids of all ages.
1. Visit a playground: Choose your own adventure, taking note of your favorite parks and playgrounds and their features, such as skate parks, swings, slides and climbing walls.
2. Learn a new sport: From tennis to golf to touch football, there are a variety of ways to experience healthy activities as a group.
Shoe to try: The Adidas Lite Racer features a Cloudfoam EVA midsole to guide your foot when enjoying high-impact sports, such as running or tennis.
3. Participate in a charity run: Whether you’re a seasoned runner or have just signed up for your first 5K, many fundraising races are designed to accommodate the whole family. For younger children, search for events that allow baby strollers or that host a separate Fun Run for the kids.
Shoe to try: Nike offers the Flex Experience, which features lightweight synthetic overlays.
4. Get outdoors: Explore a new hiking trail to make memories and enjoy stunning scenery. Cater to all family members by choosing the length and level of difficulty of the hike.
For a one-stop-shopping experience and shoe trends for families, visit the Athletic Shop at Rack Room Shoes in stores or online at www.rackroomshoes.com/athleticshop.
Exercise shouldn’t be a chore. With new gear, a great attitude and a sense of adventure, getting fit as a family will be fun. (StatePoint)

Pack 102 held their annual Blue and Gold ceremony at the VFW Post 739.  There were 14 boys that earned their rank and one that crossed over from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts.  At the event we had food that was donated by Broadway Pub and Dinky’s in addition to the parents providing a potluck.  VFW post 739 is the charter Organization for Pack 102.
The boys and their families participated in a scavenger hunt which included compass work, plank races, a skit and more.  The Boy Scout Troop 38 and Leaders were on hand to volunteer, organize some of the scavenger hunt and assist with the cross over ceremony.    Pack 102 meetings are held Monday nights at 6:30 pm and the First United Methodist Church at 55 N. 3rd Street.  For more information, visit their website at http://cubscoutpack102.org/
For the 2019 Community Service project, Pack 102 organized a collection of stuffed animals by placing donation boxes at the Broadway Pub, Bangor Trust Brewing, Recovery Revolution and A Clean Slate.
We want to thank the community for their donations and due to the amazing generosity, we were able to collect four large boxes of stuffed animals.   The new stuffed animals will be used on calls that involve children.  Officer Kiefer of the Bangor Police Department and Officer Brown of the Washington Township Police Department were on site to accept the donations. We were able to give one bag to several local police department: Bangor Borough, Washington Township, and Roseto.
We also were able to give a bag to Suburban EMS.  Pack 102 would like to thank the Police and Emergency Service for all that they do for our community.

PictureLantern Fly
Tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima) also known as ailanthus, is a rapidly growing deciduous tree native to both northeast and central China, as well as Taiwan.. Spotted Lanternfly, an invasive pest, is particularly attracted to Tree-of-heaven.
Tree-of-heaven was first introduced into the United States in the Philadelphia area in 1784. Immigrants later introduced tree-of-heaven to the West Coast in the 1850s. It was initially valued as an urban street tree and was widely planted in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., area. From these areas, tree-of-heaven has spread and become a common invasive plant in urban, agricultural, and forested areas.
Tree-of-heaven is dioecious, meaning a tree is either male or female, and typically grows in dense colonies, or “clones.” All trees in a single clone are the same sex. Female trees are prolific seeders with the potential to produce more than 300,000 seeds annually.
This species is easily confused with some of our native species that have compound leaves and numerous leaflets, such as staghorn sumac, black walnut, and hickory. The leaf edges of these native trees all have teeth, called serrations, while those of tree-of-heaven are smooth. The foul odor produced by the crushed foliage and broken twigs is also unique to tree-of-heaven.
Due to its extensive root system and resprouting ability, tree-of-heaven is difficult to control.
Spotted Lanternfly
The Spotted Lanternfly, Lycorma delicatula (White), an invasive planthopper, has been discovered in Berks and surrounding counties in Pennsylvania. It is native to China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, and introduced to Japan and Korea where it has become a major pest of grapes. This insect has the potential to greatly impact the grape, hops and logging industries. Early detection is vital for the protection of Pennsylvania businesses and agriculture.

Houck Speaks To PA Women's Club

Picture
The May 6th meeting of the Pen Argyl Woman’s Club featured substitute guest speaker First Deputy District Attorney Terence Houck.
Attorney Houck, Northampton County’s first deputy district attorney and former Philadelphia police officer, is running for County District Attorney.
Attorney Houck, who has worked under District Attorney John Morganelli since 2006, lauded Morganelli’s contributions to the NARCAN
medication used to block the effects of opioids) project, the mental health court diversions, lower gang incidence, and the 2017 post conviction drug
court.
He spoke to the group specifically about the Slate Belt and attributed a lower level of crime to the sense of community.  Problems facing the Slate Belt range from opioid issues to theft and lower level property crimes but, first and foremost is DUI (driving under the influence) making up 45% of all cases.
Some questions from the audience touched on illegal immigrants, child/mental abuse, and cell phones/distracted driving which by itself makes up 85% of all cases.
A drug task force newsletter was handed out at the conclusion of the meeting followed by discussion and refreshments.
The Woman’s Club meets @ 7pm every first Monday of the month at St John Lutheran Church on Westbrook Avenue in Pen Argyl.

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month

Picture
May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month in Pennsylvania, and individuals who spend time outdoors should check themselves for ticks and be aware of the symptoms of Lyme disease and other tick-related ailments.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the first line of defense against Lyme is to take precautions in the outdoors by using insect repellent with DEET, wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants, checking for – and promptly and properly removing – any ticks, and showering shortly after exposure.
If bitten, an individual should monitor the area for the next month. Symptoms of Lyme disease include fever, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, a bull’s eye rash may appear, and other symptoms that can be mistaken for viral infections, such as influenza or infectious mononucleosis.
Pennsylvania has led the nation in confirmed cases of Lyme disease for three straight years.
Last year, a $500,000 grant was provided to East Stroudsburg University (ESU) to allow all Pennsylvania residents to have ticks (found on them or a family member) tested for free by the university. The Tick Lab is located within the Dr. Jane Huffman Wildlife Genetics Institute at ESU. Click here to access the Tick Lab website with all the details.

Warm Weather Weight Loss Blunders

Picture
Blunder 1: Crash dieting: The thought of putting on a swimsuit may entice you to crash diet. Crash diets are not only unhealthy, they tend to slow metabolism, making it difficult for you to drop more than just a few pounds. Also, any weight you lose short-term will be regained as soon as you resume eating normally. It’s best to stick with your healthy lifestyle year-round.  Have a bad day? That’s okay. Vow to get back on track the next day.
• Blunder 2: Ordering smoothies and frapps: When the weather turns hot, a blended drink can seem like an ideal morning or afternoon pick-me-up. However, those from coffee shops and convenience stores tend to be loaded with sugar and fat. A 16-ounce serving may have more than 200 calories and 50 grams of sugar. Quench cravings by ordering unsweetened or lightly sweetened iced coffee or tea or opt for a protein shake.
• Blunder 3: Not watching alcohol intake: Alcoholic beverages can be very refreshing in warm weather, but even a light beer or white wine is more than 100 calories, and today’s popular sweet drinks like hard cider and wine coolers have as many 180 calories each. To avoid over-indulging, alternate one or two drinks with fizzy seltzer over ice and a lime wedge.
• Blunder 4: Perspiring to lose: When you exercise in the heat, you may think you can feel the pounds melting off with each bead of sweat. And if you weigh yourself right before and after a workout, you may see a difference. The problem is as soon as you replace the fluids you’ve sweated out, you’ll see on the scale that you’ve lost little, if any, weight. Your best bet is to maintain a steady activity level every day so that you get at least 150 minutes of movement a week. Regular activity keeps your metabolism burning continually, even if you’re just walking inside an air-conditioned mall. (StatePoint)

Save your Battery with Black Wallpaper
Change your background to black wallpaper and you will also save on battery life. A lot of a mobile device’s battery is used by lighting up the display. When less of the display is lit up, less power is used.
Change Out Your App Icons
Are you tired of the same old icons? There are a ton of apps available for switching out your icons for something more interesting. Just choose one that has a theme that suits your tastes and you are good to go. You can also completely customize by using your own images.

Climate Change Affects our Trees

PictureSycamore is Climate Change Resilient
The theory of evolution suggests species will adapt to changing environmental conditions over long periods of geologic time. But, instead of warming over a period of 1,000 years, the climate is changing faster due to human activity -- several degrees per 100 years. Due to the rate of climate change, the gradual natural selection of genetic traits that allow species to adapt and reproduce over time may not be enough to preserve the abundance of tree species in Pennsylvania.
Some tree species won’t be able to thrive here as the climate continues to change faster than the plants can adapt. Northern species like mountain maple, American beech, balsam fir, paper birch, and quaking aspen are especially at risk. Our climate may warm too quickly for these species to adapt before dying out. Yet, warming due to climate change is not the only threat to the commonwealth’s trees.
Last year (2018), many areas of the state set records for rainfall. Scientists forecasted that the northeastern U.S. climate would become not only warmer, but wetter -- which is be proving to be true. Since 1991, heavy rain events have increased more than 30 percent when compared to the 1901-1960 period.
Many Pennsylvania tree species do not thrive in continuous soggy conditions; and could significantly decline across the state over the long term. The American mountain ash is a species which may suffer double risk due to its northern habit and upland site preference. Given current climate trends and future considerations, it wouldn’t make much sense to plant northern/upland species. A more practical strategy would be to choose climate change-resilient trees to replace those we lose.
Climate change-resilient trees for Pennsylvania should be southern tree species that tolerate or prefer wetter soil. Species meeting these criteria include: Sycamore, Hackberry, Boxelder, Eastern redbud Suitable trees for a warming climate, but well-drained sites include several oak and hickory varieties: Pin oak, Black oak, Shagbark hickory, Mockernut hickory. Other adaptable species likely to be climate change-resilient include: Slippery elm, Black gum, Shortleaf pine, Eastern hophornbeam

Time To Share the Road

Picture
As the weather continues to warm up, more and more Pennsylvanians will ride their bicycles on the roads.
Both motorists and bicyclists can work together to ensure everyone shares the road and gets home safely.
Motorists and bicyclists have the right to use the roads in Pennsylvania and should work to maintain a 4-foot barrier between each other when passing.
Motorists are allowed to overtake a bicycle in a no-passing zone, provided they leave a 4-foot clearance.
You can learn more about Pennsylvania’s bicycle laws here.

Blackfly Spraying in Northampton County

Picture

The Delaware and Lehigh rivers in Northampton County are among approximately 1,700 stream miles in 35 Pennsylvania counties that will undergo both aerial and backpack spraying by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to control black flies.
The frequency will depend upon weather and biological conditions. Treatments cannot occur during periods of heavy rain or when water levels are high as these conditions lower the effectiveness of the treatment as well as significantly increase the cost of the control operations.
DEP uses Bti, a naturally occurring bacterium, to treat the larval stage of four specific human pest black fly species. This bacterium degrades quickly in the environment and does not harm the aquatic ecosystem, birds, or other insects.
DEP notifies county and local emergency management officials prior to any spraying activity. Helicopters can be seen flying over waterways and ground crews using backpack sprayers off bridges and wading in streams conducting control operations on behalf of DEP’s Black Fly Suppression Program.
Anyone concerned at the sight of helicopter or ground personnel is encouraged to call their county emergency management office to verify that a black fly treatment is taking place in their area on that day.

The committee is seeking community volunteers to assist with and serve as actors on the float as well as to pen personal accounts of their times at Weona Park for the booklet. “The booklet and calendar will highlight the fun times of past and present at Weona. We want to involve as many community members as we can in this and honor the origins of Weona Park,” said Borough Councilwoman and Weona 100 Chair Roberta Cowley. “Any community service organization, scout group, school group or other interested party is invited to be a part of Weona 100.”

Emrick Lauds Support for Senior Center

Get a Great Lawn in Less Time

Picture

Zero-turn mowers can help you get yard work done faster. It’s no secret that your home’s exterior gets the spotlight during the summer.
If “old reliable” isn’t cutting the lawn as well as it used to and you’re searching for a new mower, there are many makes and models to consider. One type you may be less familiar with is the zero-turn mower, which offers superior maneuverability and can get yard work done faster than a standard walk-behind mower.
When shopping around, consider the following tips and insights:
Don’t Shop With Your Wallet
You’ll want something that can withstand the test of time and is backed by warranty. Keep in mind engine size and horsepower. Powerful engines cut grass faster and last longer, but also cost more.
Size Matters
The size of the area you’ll be cutting matters most.
• A larger deck speeds up mowing and is ideal for big properties with wide open areas of grass.
• The wider the cutting deck, the more grass cut with each pass. If you need to maneuver through tight spaces or have a small yard, consider a machine with a condensed, more easily-controlled mowing deck.
• Zero-turn mowers made for residential use are typically much smaller than the average ride-on mower. For a compact option at a great value, consider the DASH by Hustler Turf. Built to the brand’s high standards, it has a patented automatic park brake, foot-operated deck lift and the ability to fit through most gates, making it a good choice for front and backyard mowing.
Mow in Comfort
You’ll use this machine regularly for years to come, so prioritize comfort. Remember, the open-concept of a zero-turn allows you to get on and off easily. Be sure to sit on each mower and look at the seats and support offered.
Shop Local
Consider visiting locally-owned and operated lawn care centers. More information on zero-turn mowers can be found at hustlerturf.com.
